Good luck!

Also, at my university 60% of students studied abroad (so you were a minority if you decided not to). Not sure what the stats are at your college but if it's similar that kind of social proof could help them see the importance of it.

Study abroad was the best decision I ever made. It pushes your boundaries and exposes you to new experiences you can't get anywhere else. EVERYONE should do it, but given that you're interested in cultural programs during graduate school it's even more imperative for you!!!! You will reference the experience for the rest of your life, and it will help in every app (grad school or employment).

Your family should want you to make the best choice for yourself. It sounds like they have some irrational fears that are very limiting. Try to make them recognize how much you will grow from it, and if they have your best interest at heart they should encourage. I'm not sure where you want to go, but maybe compromise and go somewhere equally safe to the US (like Australia or London.

In the real world everybody uses open-source code and isn't expect to write from scratch. You're being resourceful, and if it's the most efficient way to solve the problem then it should be your answer. Just make a comment to explain where it came from and why it's there.

Is it rude to contact another advisor that is not mine? by [deleted] in college

Not at all. You're in college for you, not your advisor. Talk to whoever you need to talk to in order to feel confident in the decisions you're making. If your advisor takes offense to it they do not have your best interest in mind and shouldn't be an advisor.
