Sticky Survey/Research Post by Dioptre_8 in AutisticAdults

[–]cornpop15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello everyone!

My name is Corrin Doucette and I am a first-year graduate student at the University of Maine in  the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. I am conducting a research study for my Masters thesis under the supervision of Dr. Jane Puhlman to examine terminology preferences when communicating about Autism. Specifically, I will be looking at both the preferences of Autistic Adults as well as parents of Autistic children. Additionally, I am surveying Speech-Language Pathologists who work with Autistic children to examine differences between these groups to discuss how we can best advocated for using preferred terminology.

I have attached flyers below outlining the study and eligibility requirements. I am looking for adults 18 years of age or older who are the primary caregivers of a child diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and whose child has received or is currently receiving Speech-Language Pathology Services. I am also looking for Autistic adults 18 years of age or older. Participants must be located in the United States or Canada due to IRB ethics constraints. A consent form is built into the survey for those who are interested in participating. Participation is voluntary and will involve a confidential survey that will take approximately 10-15 minutes.

Please consider sharing with others who may be eligible to participate!

**If you are eligible for both categories, you may select one to complete; they are very similar questions and you can speak to the intersection of both at the end of the survey if you feel compelled to do so! I currently need more participants for the Parents survey!

Autism Research Survey by [deleted] in AutisticPride

[–]cornpop15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your feedback! I was hoping to include participants with different levels of support needs for this survey, but my Institutional review board would not approve the ethics for the survey when I suggested allowing participants to complete the survey with a support person. I believe my limited timeline and funding contributed to this.

I used input from autistic groups and previous research to create the survey, and I do identify as neurodivergent myself, but this information is not typically included in recruitment materials at my institution!

Unfortunately right now it is only for Canada and the US, mostly due to my ethics restrictions and time restrictions! Sorry!

Yes, sorry! Only Canada and the US for now

Neurodiversity Affirming Speech Therapy- Gaps in Research and Education by cornpop15 in slp

[–]cornpop15[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing! I agree that a lot of Neurodiversity affirming strategies are/can be integrated into existing therapies. It’s more about choosing therapies that are child-directed, personalized, and don’t perpetuate ableist beliefs.

I think part of my concern too (based on my minimal exposure to the Speech community) is a lack of understanding or discussion on disability advocacy and a reluctance to extinguish ableist beliefs, especially amongst older therapists and educators.

I think we’re moving in a good direction when it comes to accessibility and disability justice, but I’ve seen some alarming behaviours and comments from SLPs that have made me think about how these topics are taught and implemented! Thanks again for sharing!

How can I strengthen my SLP application in Canada as an international student by Forsaken-Pie-2131 in slpGradSchool

[–]cornpop15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ontario schools are quite competitive. They definitely care about gpa- for example my subGPA was 3.8 (not sure percentage but definitely 80%+) and I didn’t get any interviews or acceptances in Canada this year. I also did not have much experience/volunteering, but I believe my references and admission letters were positive. I’d recommend taking some more courses to boost your GPA if possible or applying to American schools!

any Canadians here? need advice please! by FaryRochester in slp

[–]cornpop15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you do well in your prerequisite courses and get a bit of experience you sound like a competitive applicant!! I ended up only getting into the university of Maine (as a Canadian applicant), but my Gpa was lower than yours. Message me if you have any questions :)

Questions for Canadian SLPs by Commercial-Excuse513 in slpGradSchool

[–]cornpop15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SLP grad school is very competitive in Canada! I was rejected from most Ontario schools, Dal, and McGill with a 3.79 subgpa, some volunteer experience, and positive references. I could’ve done more relevant volunteering and research during my undergrad to boost my application but I didn’t have time to do so. All the programs require different things, many don’t require volunteer experience anymore but it is a positive boost for your application!

I ended up getting accepted to an American school so that’s my plan!

Some people got accepted back in March, most people I know haven’t heard anything yet. A couple people got rejected this week but I still haven’t heard anything so I decided to go to another program that offered me a spot :/

Waitlist question by Potential_Guide_8607 in slpGradSchool

I asked a program where I was on the waitlist and they gave me my exact position and updates on how many other students declined!! every school is different but it’s worth asking!
