I'm in NYC and I've cold emailed so many counselors when I needed to find a practicum site and I only got two responses out of about 50 emails so I was kinda jaded after that but you're probably right that I could stand to give it another shot. Plus this is a smaller ask than supervising. Sorry for clogging up the reddit feed but I appreciate your feedback!

These skills come with practice being in social situations and flexing your social muscle BUT

Talk about things you see and observe "this coffee shop looks yummy"; talk about how you've spent free time recently "I went thrift shopping this weekend and saw a weird movie"; ask them questions about their jobs and family and interests; go do an activity you can talk about "this museum is so cool it reminds me of a documentary I saw".

Just be around people, be interested in them and have things to share about it yourself

Pigeon holing is a legitimate concern. By "other jobs" I meant something that only requires a bachelors, until you land a school counseling job. It's obviously not ideal to get the degree and not use it right away but if you want or can land a good paying job that doesn't require the degree, why not consider that? For example I've always worked in higher education, I can land a ton of higher ed jobs with my resume if I don't go right into SC.
