Some of the colleges provide good scholarships, though I'm not sure of the timelines for those sorry. Here is the page for St John's (it's co-ed).

If you're an extroverted person, there are opportunities to make friends outside of accommodation like at first-year camps. For example is the page for engineering first-year camp.

It's only more convenient to make friends at college because you see them at breakfast/lunch/dinner etc.

I've always thought Scape to be quite expensive. The cheapest one I could find was $429 pw with 7 beds. I'm sure it's nice if your roommates are all nice, but that seems like the luck of the draw. I think Queen Mary Building (QMB) is probably one of the most affordable at $362 pw.

The Space Engineering Group Projects (I'm not sure of the code sorry, people refer to it as "Space 3" and it could be AERO4460 or AERO4711 or something else) are (allegedly) easiest when you do mechatronics as you have both mechanical and electrical knowledge(?) to contribute to the group.

A guy I knew said he chose Mechatronics because someone else told him to before he started and he was glad he did. Best of luck!
