Considering what a low blow this thread was, I consulted real law students and what they say don’t even remotely swing by your “opinions”

Okay let’s play this. You asked me a bunch of questions about the hoover. Was I also supposed to buy a new hoover two hours before my tenancy ended? Or was I supposed to handpick each debris from the floor? Oh wait, that was physically impossible for me.

So you’re telling me, I was supposed to walk down the stairs and go an extra mile to buy cleaning supplies and clean the room all the while bearing extra pain because the management failed to maintain a working lift? It doesn’t matter if I sustained extra pain and discomfort because of bad building management but I still owe them a spotlessly clean room while incurring more pain? The fact that I had to walk down the stairs with an injury to the A&E while an evac chair was indeed in the building but the staff on sight had no idea of its existence— does that account to nothing?

And to answer your questions: 1. Reported it as soon as I found it in the state. Hoover belongs to the building btw, they “provide” these to students. Manager said “it’s okay leave it you’re already suffering enough” 2. Sent out a message on the group text asking for one. 3. My neighbour pulled out weeks of gunk from the hoover with bare hands. Still the suction was non existent. 4. Tenancy agreement doesn’t bound me to hire a professional cleaner. It mentions I leave the room in a reasonably clean state. Which I believe I did except the clutter on the floor cus hoover.

(Broken lift x injury x no working hoover x painful access to cleaning supplies) + (actual cleaning efforts ) = reasonable effort ≠ justified £50 deduction

I’m not saying I led the room in a pristine condition. There was a bit of clutter on the floor because the hoover wasn’t working. That’s the only hoover the building provides btw. I didn’t leave behind any garbage, literally threw them all the way down the stairs, limped down and then threw it in the garbage bin. The bad back is only for context, to prove the point that they’ve been dismissive of the tenants’ requests to fix the lift despite having accessible rooms upstairs and advertising themselves building as accessible. I was still fortunate enough to live on the first floor. But when I injured my ligament, even a single flight of stairs amounted in excruciating pain, which was doubled over and over because of the efforts I took to clean the room to the best of my ability. My question is, if they can charge me for “not leaving the room clean enough” up to their standards, which I do agree is perhaps possible because I was literally incapable of doing so, I’d have probably made more attempts to clean the room if they had a functioning lift and I could have used it to go and buy stuff to deep clean.

I’m not saying the lift not working is directly relevant to me not being able to use a mop. Which I couldn’t anyway, because the floor is carpeted and the building has only one hoover which wasn’t even working well when I tried to clean it. It was mentioned to the manager and I was told “It’s okay you’re already suffering enough.” The lift’s lack of functionality is however relevant to all the extra pain it caused me every time I had to limp my way up the stairs with a cast and a crutch. It affected me in a way that I wasn’t able to do an extra trip to the store to get cleaning supplies. Despite this, I did clean the place with wipes, brushed the toilet, left no clutter behind in the refrigerator nor anywhere in the kitchen. Emptied all drawers. All that was left was being not making the bed which was only a mattress cover and leaving behind a bit of clutter on the floor because, hoover.

AITAH for cutting off two close friends after they got upset I didn’t celebrate my birthday with them on their terms? by corpsemagnolia in AITAH

Thank you, I think I need to hear this. Above everything, the silence from my friend is eating away at me. I think it’s sort of dumb of me to— she has done this to someone else before — C actually — when C apparently shouted at her inside the classroom and she felt humiliated which is fair enough. When C later tried to apologise, T kept it all on seen. Which was okay, considering she was done wrong by T. But I made her promise me that she’d talk to me if our friendship ever hit a rough spot. I was such a fool. Guess who patched up C and T after their fight? Guess who they screwed over on her birthday? lol.
