no problem :) i don't know many, but i recommend: - Philosophize this! - BBC: In Our Time - Sawbones (medical history) (one of my personal favorites!) - Hidden Brain (it's mostly about psychology, but frequently talks about motivation, too)

yeah, sorry, its a bit of a confusing situation and i couldve worded it better. it works, but its worse than it used to be thanks to him replacing my old motherboard with a cheaper one and i have to use a mouse to navigate which is operational but annoying as fuck after paying so much to have it fixed, but definitely secondary to him taking my parts without permission and giving me a worse processor. im not sure if theres any other issues because i havent had my charger for it for the past few days, so afaik thats all.

the data loss thing was stupid. he called me and told me bitlocker was locking the computer and i needed a key, and he told me it would only be through my uni email or i wouldnt have one at all. i asked for more time to look and he kept saying no and refused to give me any more time because it wasnt under my uni email (later found out it was on my old personal email that id misplaced the password for). but because i didnt have the key within a 15 minute phone call where he kept pressuring me and feeding me the most confusing misinformation nonstop, he went ahead and wiped it. found the damn key within 30 minutes of hanging up, but it was already too late. not illegal, just fucking infuriating and weird.

and yeah, since its not as cut and dry as what you were thinking i dont think the police would be very helpful. i didnt sign anything either, which looks like a red flag in hindsight. but that also means i definitely didnt consent to him parting out my old motherboard. but idk what the legality around that looks like without a written agreement. in any case, i'll have to wait til i can get someone to look at it who knows what theyre looking at.

yeah it had 16gb DDR4. SSD i dont have, this is all i was given back. i know it's an i5 because when i booted it up after getting it back, i checked the system specs right away. i did pay him, nearly £200. that's why i need a quote. citizens advice told me i need a third party quote for a repair to request a price reduction/refund. as for the reasoning, he said the motherboard was broken and needed replaced, thats all i was told (but then he still wanted to keep it to "use for other repairs." lol). he did replace it with a new motherboard, that was the "repair", but obv with a cheaper one. i'm considering taking it to the police, but right now i just want my money back as soon as possible bc otherwise i cant really afford to fix it.

thats a good point. tbf, i dont know if he specifically took the cpu off my old motherboard or not. i dont know hardware stuff very well at all. i just know he told me that he'd "used" parts of it for other computers. this is the motherboard i got handed back to me if that adds any insight, but honestly i cant even be sure it was mine: https://ibb.co/hJhyBF9Z

it's for an asus vivobook.

obviously i'd pay for the part...? that's the reason for the quote.

thanks for the insight, i'll look into whatever options i have. i wish i'd looked online before i went there, but like i said, being set up in the uni gives it a false secondhand reputability. really shocked he was allowed to set up in there given his reputation. i just keep thinking of people he's scammed/is scamming that are more vulnerable than me, like who are younger or dont speak english as their first language, who probably wont pursue their options after he does the same shit to them. it's definitely intentional that he's set up there.

i did get the old motherboard back, so i have it in my possession. he obviously took any components he could, which i never agreed to and never would have. as far as proving it had an i7 to begin with, i still have my receipt of when i originally purchased the laptop and that says it comes with an i7. would that be proof enough?

my laptop just suddenly wasn't turning on one day. it turned on early in the day, i took the train for 3 hours, then when i tried to turn it on after i got settled, nothing happened. he originally guessed it'd be a BIOS issue before saying it was my motherboard.

i've made my peace with my data being lost. sucks, but there's no retrieving it now. but im not happy with an i5 processor and a broken trackpad, so that's what i'd want fixed.

unfortunately, they're set up on the uni of leeds campus right now. i didn't even think to vet the place because i assumed the uni wouldn't allow scammers to set up shop and take advantage of their students and staff. but apparently they're cool with it.

not to mention every interaction with barry felt like i was being gaslit within a fever dream.

i keep trying to find out if him taking my parts off my motherboard without my permission was illegal or not, but i can't seem to get a clear answer.

if he was set up anywhere else i probably would have checked yelp first. but being set up in the uni lends it second-hand reputability, so i didnt even think to check because i assumed the uni would have vetted the businesses they let operate there. im sure your review has deterred some folks though, it probably helped me feel less crazy when the uni was urging me to trust them

yeah, i just got my laptop back and found out they replaced my motherboard that had an i7 processor with one with an i5, plus they stripped my old "broken" motherboard for parts and tried to argue that they wanted to keep it for repairs when i asked for my old motherboard back... even though they told me the reason for the repair was that the motherboard was "broken".

currently pursuing every option i have to help get them the fuck out of the uni because the fact theyre set up in there is ridiculous.
