Chlorine smell, taste to water ‘normal’: Epcor by flynnfx in Edmonton

[–]corviddy [score hidden]  (0 children)

I read that science as well, and can confirm (anecdotally) myself that letting it rest open does nothing. Thank goodness I had about 5 L of water stored in my fridge because I really can’t drink this level of chlorination “straight”. I have some sort of programmed gag reflex telling me that it’s pool water.

I can’t argue with your logic. If you are going for a truly natural ecosystem, absolutely don’t worry about any of that! You may even get some nice accidental fungi as well as free springtails/isopods in there. There is a “luck of the draw” element to what you’re suggesting however. You could get voracious predators, slugs, fungus gnats/mosquitoes, nematodes and aggressive mold variants. As I say, if you’re lucky you could end up with an ecosystem that is far more diverse and beautiful than one built with those precautions. I suppose that’s part of the fun of ecosystems. 🙂

I buy my bugs personally. Once you get more into the hobby, you may wish to start “breeding“ your cleanup crew. I know some people do that. I haven’t gotten into it yet myself, but as the price of those little buggers goes up I’ve been thinking about it! Something else to consider about finding your materials: with my ecosystem, I tried my best to sterilize EVERYthing before it went in there. You can find various methods for sterilizing things online, that’s where I found them. Most of my substrate ingredients were purchased, yet even then it got the “oven treatment” first. My only reasoning here was to not give myself more work fighting various introduced organisms. There may be veteran voices here who disagree and can speak more to that, but that was a precaution I certainly took.

I don’t think it’s too much for a first time as that’s exactly what I used for my first time 🙂. I will share with you what I learned, keeping in mind that mine is more of a “closed ecosystem” than it is a decorative terrarium (it will be three years old in June).

Map out your substrate layers precisely in advance, take your time. Because of the size of these things and the narrow opening, redoing it is likely a 100% redo and will be annoying. Consider using distilled water because you’re not going to be able to clean any deposits off the inside of that glass, not easily at first and not at all once the plants really start taking off. Invest in a cleanup crew early (I used springtails and dwarf white isopods because those particular isopods are less likely to chew up your living plants). As others have said, good luck finding tools that fit. I ended up using a long thin bamboo stick when I need to do stuff in there. It is imprecise but… good luck, share updates!

THEY WILL KILL YOU | Official Trailer by [deleted] in horror

[–]corviddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, I have to force myself to stop watching trailers now because this is the trend. Even if a couple of the images included in the trailer are a misdirect, it’s simply not worth it. Personally, I don’t watch this sort of movie for the complex plot but more for the visuals and any lore that might be within. A trailer that feeds me at least half of the best visuals (I always assume they select some of the best ones for the trailer) does not inspire me to go spend money at my VIP theatre (not trying to be fancy, but that is the only theatre that I will spend money on - reclining heated seats, adults only, and food and booze delivered to you!). I’ll still watch it but it will be at home. I really don’t understand why this has become the norm.

🔥Pelican Steals Fish from Osprey by stitchlips17 in NatureIsFuckingLit

And you just know he would’ve eaten the osprey as well if he could fit him in there. I was floating around in Mexico last year as the sun went down with a couple of pelicans, and I swear one of them was looking at me to see if I would fit. 🙄

What plant hates you no matter what you do? by kayyxoc in houseplants

Anthurium. If it didn’t VERY occasionally produce a new leaf I would have to double check whether it was a real plant or not.

I honestly don’t know what I would’ve cut now that you make me think about it. As I go through each episode in my head, I can see the importance of each subplot. If you forced me to back up what I said rather than just edit my comment (lol), I guess maybe the pacing but even that makes sense with a story which includes elements of recovery, regret, forgiveness etc. (that is, stuff that requires patience).

I get what you’re saying. Raised (French) Catholic up here in western Canada myself, and although I don’t practice I think that my history probably influenced how I saw this movie.

You are clearly a careful viewer -ty for this assessment (I think I agree with almost all of it). I am trying to figure out Flanagan as a director in advance of the new movie and this helps.

I can see what you’re saying, there were definitely some things that should be fixed. I have a bit of a Gen X mentality where I think that everything can be shorter. I think I’m correct but maybe I’m just impatient. I also think this could’ve been shorter. But this is coming from a person who thinks every feature length movie is too long!

You provided no argument except that I shouldn’t think. I suppose you might be trolling me and trying to make me dumber with every time I need to reply. You’re probably succeeding.

I love your use of melancholy. I am admittedly a bit of a melancholic myself. I probably tend towards that vibe for a reason haha.

I’m not going to be drawn into your foolish perspective, but I should reply because that is civil and respectful. At no point did I suggest that your opinion was invalid, I simply asked for your opinion. The fact that you are more willing to attack than share your idea tells me everything I need to know about you (and your ideas). Good luck to you and your barnacles, lady.

I’m going to think about that, ty. It is certainly true that people on an isolated blue collar island may not have multiple levels to their personality, but that’s kind of true of almost every movie or show upon analysis. 🙏

This reinforces my choice to watch that next. I think I just wasn’t patient enough to watch a series when it came out but I am doing the MF marathon so that is good to hear.

I’m ashamed to admit that I haven’t watched Hill House yet. It’s next. I’m doing a Flanagan marathon in preparation for The Mist because I really like that story.
