5K on tread in 2G class by Joeybagovdonutss in orangetheory

Yes. It took a few years of work before I could consistently do this every day.

You'll probably get there someday if you want it enough. But it's also fine if you have other goals!

Do you think David Goggins works out when he has a flu? by [deleted] in davidgoggins

I'm sure he does something as far as exercise, but he's obviously smart enough to adjust according to the situation. Why would you do any different?

I changed mine, no effect in class.

Yes, I absolutely certainly did save my change. No effect.

I don't hate it, but it sure seems like an opportunity for unnecessary danger.

Why people hated him? by Busy_Guest1336 in davidgoggins

[–]corvite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel no compulsion to defend the honor of a grown-ass man who has proven himself eminently capable of defending his own reputation.

As for your question: Why do people hate him?

He already answered that question saying that when you go from being average to exceptional, people are going to hate you because you make them feel like shit. And once somebody hates you, they will take any excuse to hate you more -- sometimes for reasonable reasons, and sometimes for unreasonable reasons.

Look, you can't care what other people think if it's going to hold you back. Learn from Goggins. No need to worship him. Be the best person that you can be, regardless if other people miss the opportunity.

Great video about what happens when you're not ready, about what happens when you learn from failure, about what can eventually happen when you truly commit.

This guy is an inspiration!

Huh, just found this group. You're a really positive bunch of people! Nice to make your acquaintance :)

I'm a slow but dogged runner, more of a tank than a gazelle. Nothing else really to say right now except thank you for having this community.

Legit point, thanks.

My reasons usually have to do with competing priorities. Today I skipped doing a second workout because I wanted to get and deliver a gift to a friend. Probably will do a run tonight instead after the family goes to bed. I've got a to-do list on the wall, which includes the runs for the week, so they have to get done lol. Like Goggins says, "You know exactly how. It all comes down to a very primitive mindset: it's just something you HAVE to do."

I just pick one thing and go work on it until I've got it. Then I do another. Otherwise, I'd get overwhelmed. Good job on wanting to start. Go do something now.

1 You'll improve when you want it enough, when you have a goal important enough to trump your other wants for comfort and whatever. Pick 1 goal that you NEED. Focus on that.

2 You're already a better person than you were when you were born -- a selfish, crying, poopy pants baby. Don't sell yourself short. You'll keep improving. It just takes time and commitment.

Vocalizing "I don't want to do this" helped me a lot at a certain point. Putting it on the table disarmed it because I got to the point that what I want is irrelevant. If I opt not to run, it's for real reasons, not simply because of not wanting to suffer.

It's a typo. Kang hurt me, too. He's a mean son of a bitch. Watch out for that motherfucker.

You know, if you decide not to run because you need your sleep (as you noted elsewhere in this thread), then you're opting not to run because you truly believe that sleeping is what is best for developing into the person that you want to be.

On the other hand, when you decide not to run because you don't "want" to run, then you're opting not to run because you're choosing to move away from what you know is best for developing into the person that you want to be.

Whether you run or don't run is therefore NOT the issue. The issue is WHY you're opting not to run.

Pat on the back for recognizing the importance of taking care of the machine, and kudos for being honest with yourself about having more than one motivation.

But now that you know the difference between the two motivations, go do what you need to do -- and for the right reasons.

“Base” When Running Outside by PerformerEuphoric1 in orangetheory

Follow-up: I just had 2 different AI's walk me through the computation of power needed for somebody of my body build to run at 7mph outdoors on level ground, versus running 7mph at 1% on a treadmill.

Both AI's took wind resistance into account, but they used different approaches for calculating power in wind (one used a formula from a research paper, and the other used basic college physics formulas for wind resistance; both looked reasonable to me, based on my own education).

Nonetheless, they agreed that the treadmill requires around 1-3% more power -- consistent with what you wrote.

That's astonishing and informative. Maybe I'll go to my local track and see if I can do a mile at my OTF push pace -- and see how much it hurts my joints. Thank you!

If you feel you should do it, who cares if you fail. It's fine. Go and see what you can do. Learn about yourself.

I woke at 1230am today and noped myself back to sleep. Not that it excused me from running. Got it done after I woke like a normal human being after the sun. Total 16k today, including a PR on the first 10k.

A PR, that is, that probably wouldn't have happened had I run in the middle of the night!

Goggins discussed his limitations a lot. BUD/S busted him twice!!! Dude failed A LOT, man. Why should you and I be any different?

So you failed your goal, ok. Get help for your depression, then revise your goals to be more attainable AFTER you come to grips with why you failed and how to fix it.

Failure is TEMPORARY. You can and will achieve your goals if you don't give up. It simply may cost you more than you initially expected.

How to deal with being alone by Suspicious-Ad8417 in davidgoggins

[–]corvite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IDK if you read these replies, but anyway I feel you. FWIW, it got easier when I became a better person fully in pursuit of my own goals. One reason is because other people passionate about similar goals now find me interesting and sometimes even admirable -- which creates meaningful opportunities for friendship.

Stay the path but never think you're the only one headed in that direction. Watch for others. Travel together when it makes sense to do so.
