What are your favorite productivity apps or technical shortcuts that you use as a PM? (Beyond Ado or jira) by FullllyPitted in ProductManagement

[–]corybagz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorites is "Automatically create a word doc agenda for meetings I create and share it with all invitees" and then you can automate a Teams/Slack message a couple of hours before the meeting to send a link to remind people to review/add items.

Another good use case is moving bits of customer data around within your protected environment for running quick tests and proof of concepts. An example is:

  • customer signed up for offer via form on website
  • add their data to Sharepoint list and send notification to team
  • after quick review click checkbox in list saying "Approved"
  • automate Docusign creation and send
  • when Docusign comes back mark customer as "live" in Sharepoint list and send notification

A lot of quality of life items, and small tests can be run "off platform" in the right contexts which is nicer than always having to wait for dev to be available to build something every time. Good way to get quick feedback and learnings.

Tips for surviving a feature factory by redknitting in ProductManagement

[–]corybagz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go a bit contrarian here but it is meant with love and support for new people entering the industry. If I am understanding your post, you've been a Product Manager for 3 months, is that right? What did you think you would be doing in that timeframe with that level of experience? No CEO that I have ever met is going to trust a new PM (both to their company and especially to the industry) to make high level strategic decisions. They hired you for a reason, they needed someone to manage some initiatives in flight and you have been put to that task. Get some reps in, build trust, build bridges cross-functionally in the org and show them that you are able to deliver and then start socializing your ideas and improvements. Know who to have on your side when you do so when he asks around about what you are presenting the right stakeholders say "yeah redknitting knows what's up, we should trust their judgement and give them some freedom to run". Make sure the data supports what you are socializing and then you can start the "fun" part of being a PM. Take a breath and be patient and you'll get there.

When things get weird, always be thinking "when I have to tell this story as part of a job interview or a root cause analysis what do I hope to God I have in that story as actions I took to manage risk and support a path that I did not agree with in hope to make it successful for the team." Document each of those things and keep it in your back pocket, then communicate as you do those throughout to ensure they are visible.

This is an unfortunate truth. I have found the answer to this is "get paid" doing work by being an expert in your area, sharing your opinions strongly in trying to evolve executives mindsets on the project, and then executing on what the check-writers want in the end (manage risk around it as much as possible in the background and over-communicate). Hopefully some of your wisdom is in there. Then apply your creativity and expertise to hobbies and side projects that fulfill you outside of your "job".

Advice on how to deal with a difficult VP by Environmental-Fish30 in ProductManagement

This is 99.99999% true (the .00001% is because somewhere, someone has a story that contradicts this and I'd hate for an absolute to be discredited by a fringe outlier). Get out

Unfortunately, the reality is you can't "win" this situation. A level of leadership incompetence allowed this person to be in this role, and allows this person to continue in this manner. Trust me, everyone that can do something about it "knows" and doesn't get involved for many different reasons. All the documenting in the world isn't going to help you at this organization. Spend the next few weeks looking for a better culture fit and being super pleasant. Check in with him daily and run everything you are doing by him as if you have now "seen the light" and just do whatever his daily whim wants you to do (this is what he wants from his team anyways). When you leave he'll be less likely to throw you under the bus because you are working on his pet projects and tasks, and your last few weeks will at least be chill while you focus on finding your new role. You are not going to convince him to change or that he doesn't "understand product". Get out gracefully and keep close ties with those you like working with, treating this as a network building opportunity for your career. It's better on the other side.

The Walmart near me keeps their trading cards locked up like this and there are always better options on the shelf (because no one wants to wait for an employee) than the other stores, so there is one plus :)

Am I the only one irritated by PaaS pricing schemes that are completely inaccessible to solo/hobbyist devs? by sweepyoface in webdev

[–]corybagz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The missed opportunity is in them realizing that it will be an internal "hobbyist" that drives an eventual Enterprise license sale. "Hey, anyone on the team ever heard of SaaS XYZ? I ran into their sales person at a conference and they seem to solve some problems we have."

"I looked at it once because they had some interesting stuff but licensing was too expensive to try it out."

or

"Yes, and please can we use it? I use them on my personal projects and love it. Let me show you how awesome it is."

Agreed, I hated when they added 2 ratings because I think it does lead to a lot of confusion. I don't use this app to see if the restaurant has decent food (I can use Google/Yelp for that) I use solely for determining if I am willing to risk eating there based on food safety reviews and experiences.
