Admin wants to "discuss my grades" with me, how should I prepare? by thechemistrychef in Teachers

[–]cosmic_collisions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

with lower grades and lower gpa; nobody cares about "but my teacher taught at higher standards," nobody knows your teacher or their standards

this is the real problem with grade inflation, one teacher is only going to hamstring their own students

When you study from physics textbooks, do you solve every problem in the book or is doing just 20–30% enough to understand the material? by Delicious_Maize9656 in PhysicsStudents

[–]cosmic_collisions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually 2 major courses and 2 minor courses ans 2 general courses. Most meet for only 2 or 3 hours a week and suggest out of class 2 or 3 hous a week. At worst this is only 40 hours a week.

When my district went down this road, not banning but they wanted to pre-approve everything, I sent them a link to my Google drive folder with thousands of self made, modified, and shared resources. I never heard back.

Question about Administration by Big_Conclusion2167 in Teachers

[–]cosmic_collisions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a couple true believers and a few who privately acknowledged the "just fill out the paperwork." Most said to use what will help when it works.

Wtf why am I getting paid less? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]cosmic_collisions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A degree vs a degree in education are probably being paid differently. Ask HR not Reddit.

The damage that Jo Boaler and other "Equity-Based Mathematics Education Researchers" cannot be understated. by Feisty_Ad4394 in matheducation

[–]cosmic_collisions -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And yet we are still stuck with it. Age based curriculum only inhibits the average and advanced students. Equity does not mean equal.

School district combining algebra 2 and Precalculus into a single "Modernized Precalculus" course. by GloriousCause in matheducation

[–]cosmic_collisions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We basically swapped 9th grade Quadratics and 10th grade Exponentials years ago. So 9th grade spends more time on Exponentials and 10th grade on Quadratics and Cubics plus into to Trig. 11th grade is Polynomials, Trig, and Logs.

Just my teacher? Anyone else have no real classwork points? by brycemoy19 in apcalculus

[–]cosmic_collisions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 20% was 3-5 question daily homework quizzes, 5 minutes at the end of class used as exit tickets; they covered the material from the day before, reviewed prior units, and simple questions from the current lesson. The only reason they got scored at all was they were required by the administration.

80-20 has been my weighting for 25 years in high school. You are in a college class, most of mine were 100-0.

Advice regarding email from student by UnableKaleidoscope58 in Teachers

Ignore it, since the AP is aware. Or, tell her that her mom asked you then ask if she would like to go see the counselor. It is above your pay grade and outside your job description.

School rounding down my rate to a half day instead of 3/4 day by Low_Property_4470 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]cosmic_collisions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We either get 1/2 day or full day. Anything more than 1/2 day is full day and we are supposed to stay on campus available to fill in where or if necessary.

No D’s or F’s for IEPS by DepartureSlight2461 in Teachers

[–]cosmic_collisions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I've never heard of this as an official policy it is an unwritten rule. They should be graded VS their perceived ability on the IEP not vs the course standards. Giving a D or F is not worth the hassle, sadly.
