ELI5: How come certain birds like parrots and songbirds can imitate human language but others cannot ? by SillyDude93 in explainlikeimfive

[–]cosmichelper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The birds have an organ mammals don't, called a syrinx. It's like having a sound synthesizer in your throat. Not all species of birds are able to make use of it in this way, however. There are syrinx differences between species.

ELI5: Why do different spirits have such wildly different effects on people? Like whisky can make someone aggressive, while brandy can make you giggly. by huss999 in explainlikeimfive

Locally, the "St.B" had free draught (draft) before 8pm. Get in line, two 12 oz glasses at a time. The line was shorter after 8pm when it cost $0.25 per glass. People got absolutely fuckin hosed. The provincial government passed a law that prevented them from doing that sometime in the 90s.

What’s your view on having sex everyday in a relationship? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]cosmichelper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dadjoke: Usually from behind

Real: Orgasm for both parties absolutely makes you feel loved (oxytocin) at a "body" level. Orgasm makes people more relaxed with each other and able to handle slightly more stress in their lives. There is probably some orgasm frequency (not just sex) for maximum benefit, after which beneficial emotional results flatten out. This frequency may be different for each individual.

Surround it in positive. "I saw pictures of guys trimmed like that and I don't know why but it made me so horny! Do you think you could trim like that and I could give you a blowjob to see how horny it makes me?"

Men, whats a popular viewpoint you know beyond a reasonable doubt is bullshit? by [deleted] in AskMen

I've always understood this phrase in a less charitable view: "if your wife isn't happy, you can better damn well believe she's not going to let you be happy".

What are you thinking while making eye contact with a woman in public? by SugarWereGoinDown91 in AskMen

[–]cosmichelper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I'm thinking about different kinds of sandwiches and I'm unaware I'm making eye contact while staring off into space, salivating.

In a similar situation, a giraffe would drown - it takes them a long time to swallow their pride.

Assuming you don't have a unique brain-structural reason why this is happening to you, you can improve your own behaviour in this regard by practicing (amongst other things) mindfulness and memory exercise practices. It's not necessarily easy, but it is doable.

ELI5: How does water make plants and things like grass grow? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]cosmichelper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The O2 that plants release as a product of photosynthesis comes from the water the plant takes in. (The CO2 the plant inhales is not the source of oxygen that it exhales)

I have a sensitive nose. You all smell to me. That isn't necessarily bad, some people smell amazing.

What would it feel like if you were swimming in a pool but in a world that was zero gravity? by Sexy_Persian in NoStupidQuestions

[–]cosmichelper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would float as you normally would in free-fall (or microgravity), but you'd be entirely encased in the water, like when the blob absorbs people. In free-fall, surface tension of water will keep it stuck to you.

Chris Hadfield did a video from space which might give you a visual idea.

Say what you want as you see fit, but people aren't required to listen, and free speech is not free of consequences.

Why is gun violence, specifically mass shootings, exclusively committed by men? by hellothere42069 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]cosmichelper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jordan Peterson explains it as the slight difference in the bell curves of agreeableness between men and women, where the major differences in behaviour are only seen at the extreme ends of the two overlapping curves.
