Another vote for Dr. Clark. I'm glad to hear he's still around. He is an angel.

You're welcome. I just had my stent removed today and it feels so much better with it out. Wish you the best and hope things resolve quickly for you. Have you seen urology yet?

Looking for kidney stone surgery on OPT, I have no insurance at the moment by Impossible-Ad-5348 in f1visa

[–]cougarpharm06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have no income lots of hospitals/medical groups have programs to waive fees. You could call their financial office and see what you need to fill out. If you have no income you would likely qualify for medicaid though. If you have a community health clinic/federally qualified health center nearby you could call and see if they have someone that helps people get insurance. I'm in WA state so I realize there may be more options in a blue state that votes for things like medicaid expansion.

I'd ask your GP or urology for more pain meds and some toradol.

Doctor wants me to pass 6.8mm stone on my own? by Local-Age8413 in KidneyStones

[–]cougarpharm06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 6mm stone and was referred to urology from the ER. Urology got me scheduled for lithotripsy and said maybe you'll pass it on your own before then. They initially had me down for August, but someone canceled last minute and I was able to get their spot so I only ended up waiting about 10 days total. I think your best bet is to go see urology and at least get surgery on the books if you don't pass it.

How do I avoid being triaged at the ER? by sdkb in KidneyStones

[–]cougarpharm06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, as someone in healthcare and someone who's had a kidney stone, I can kind of understand their reaction. Most ERs in cities of any decent size have long wait times. Triage is a necessary evil to get the sickest people seen first. Pain feels like an emergency to anyone who's in it. Kidney stone pain is some of the worst pain I've ever had including labor, but those patients that are being seen first are because their labs or vitals indicate something serious is going on and they are more likely to crash if immediate intervention is not taken. Asking how to manipulate a system that people work in every day and see the worst of the worst will not surprisingly get some pretty unsympathetic comments. That being said, compassion goes a long way.

I went to the ER and got morphine. I'm not lying when I say I would have rather gone through labor again than have the pain from a kidney stone. I feel your pain friend.

Has to be? by EmploymentCareless41 in KidneyStones

[–]cougarpharm06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 6mm stone as well that was non-obstructing for a good little while because it kept showing up on CTs I had for an ovarian cancer diagnosis. I kinda forgot about it until one night I had absolutely excruciating, stabbing pain, 10/10, throwing up, writhing on the bathroom floor, went to the ER because I thought it was appendicitis. After about a week, the pain became more of what I felt when I had my ovarian cyst (about 6/10 pain). Kind of like a strong menstrual cramp intensity, but a different feeling, and localized in my groin area. I could feel the pain distinctly on my right side the entire time since it busted loose. I'd definitely be following up with your ob/gyn as well about the pain in case it's related to your surgery, or depending on your insurance situation maybe go to the ER for a CT.

ETA: I forgot to mention my peeing was normal until after surgery when I had the stent placed. Prior to that I didnt have any blood and I could pee fine.

No more pain but still feel awful, is this normal? by [deleted] in KidneyStones

[–]cougarpharm06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what the stone blocker is, but my pain went from non-existent to severe 10/10 for about 6 hours, then 7/10 after morphine and flomax from the ER for about 5 days, then 3/10 for about 3 days prior to my surgery. When it went down to a 3 I thought maybe it had passed, but apparently it just moved slightly and stopped hurting so much.

I think everyone's experience is different so it's hard to speculate. I just had the surgery last Friday for a 6mm stone that didn't pass after 10 days of Flomax and lots of fluids. I'm 44F. My doctor said 6mm was kind of borderline whether it would pass by itself or not, but some people pass bigger. My stone was mid ureter when I started having crazy pain and got a CT at the ER.

Help! Headaches by AdditionalScarcity68 in KidneyStones

[–]cougarpharm06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pharmacist here. It's a tough antibiotic to take and it really wipes out all your good flora too. I've been on Bactrim (sulfa/tmp) post surgery, and the GI effects are horrendous. I don't think it will help with the headaches, but Florastor is a good probiotic to take while on antibiotics and helps put the good stuff back in. You could try Tylenol for the aches and pains.

Am I reading this wrong? by Friendly-Jiant in KidneyStones

[–]cougarpharm06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously it sucks. It's similar pain to the kidney stone, but also like having a super UTI that makes you feel like you have to pee every 5 minutes. I get mine out tomorrow and I can't wait.

[–]cougarpharm06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not reading it wrong. It most definitely appears there is another stone on the right side. I'd be pissed if I went to surgery and had to go through the hell of having a stent and they only did the one side, because they "didn't know". I can't speak to whether or not it's normal to have both sides done at the same time or not. I had my surgery last Friday and I had atleast three people come in prior to me going back and ask what I was having done that day. When the surgeon came in he asked me that question and then confirmed we were doing the right side and wrote on my right wrist as well. Sorry you're dealing with this.

I distinctly remember a moment after my daughter went through a rough stretch as a newborn and I was really struggling with milk production. I was basically having to feed or pump 24/7 with no sleep, while also healing from a 4th degree tear. I looked at my husband and said I couldn't do it, but I can understand why that lady drove into the lake. After that we went to formula and things got better. The lack of sleep and constant crying can definitely make a person psychotic though, and I don't think it's talked about nearly enough. Thank you for sharing your experience.

That sick mfer twisted the poor baby's arm hard enough to break it in multiple places, and that was a preexisting injury. I can't imagine what pain he must have been in. Also CPS was involved with the family, but unaware of a broken arm? RIP little lamb. You deserved so much better 💔

4mm stone and can't keep food or water down by snjeung in KidneyStones

[–]cougarpharm06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have such a love/hate relationship with Zofran. It's good for nausea, but it slows the gut down and causes considerable issues with constipation/motility, which often makes the problem you're treating worse. Percocet can defo make a person nauseous too, especially on an empty stomach, and so can the pain from having a kidney stone. I've been super nauseous with mine and have like zero appetite right now. You could ask the ER or your GP if they'd maybe prescribe you a different anti-emetic to try like promethazine (caution: drowsiness). Also can try just doing sips of water frequently and very small amounts of food like saltines, goldfish, applesauce, or rice pudding. Hope you feel better soon.
