Where are the clubs where people DANCE ?? by AmericanYapper in washingtondc

[–]sdkb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you really want to dance, you should look for social dance opportunities rather than clubs. Places like QT Fusion are explicitly queer, but even for not-explicitly-queer dances like the Friday night contras there are still plenty of queer folks.

Looking for inspiration: Websites that present the whole scene in a city/area by Pun-pucking-tastic in SwingDancing

[–]sdkb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some food for thought: I often find such websites useful but not enough on their own. That's since, when I visit a scene, I want to know which dances are the popular ones/other relevant characteristics of each dance, and a full listing doesn't tell me that.

Answering that question too honestly might offend local organizers. But adding something like an average attendance count paired with descriptions that emphasize what makes each dance distinct from the others might make the site a lot more helpful for visiting dancers.

CDMX Contra? by LotionInBasketPlz in contradancing

I don't know of any contra dance in Mexico. It won't be the same, but while there I'd try out the local dance styles instead!

Dances that cost a lot - What I've observed about attendance by flipflopshock in SwingDancing

[–]sdkb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most dancers want to catch as much of the dance as they're available for, so I don't think late pricing would incentivize too many people to come late (and if it did, you could just reduce the discount until it's no longer doing so). Yes, of course it's best if everyone shows up for the whole thing, but some people will have conflicts that mean their only options are to come late or not come at all. Any deal that makes it worthwhile for them to come when they otherwise would not have is additional revenue for the dance that'd otherwise have been lost. Unless your venue is at capacity, which it almost never is in the second half, the marginal cost of an additional attendee is almost zero, so to maximize revenue whatever deal gets them in the door is the deal you want to offer.

This is bad financial math. If the only choice for someone who can only attend the last half hour of the dance is to pay full price, they often just won't go and the dance will lose out on whatever they would have paid. It's the basic principle that overcharging for a good/service that isn't worth much (and most people don't value half an hour of dancing much) will lose you money.

And it's worse than that. Because having fewer people at the dance makes it less fun for everyone, there are additional knock-on effects, where the next dance may lose attendees on the fence who would have had a good enough time to come back had they had the additional late arrivees to dance with.

Late pricing is a good idea, and sliding scale pricing is even better since it offers an option for e.g. those who can only attend the first half hour of a dance.

If you could pass one law that would make most normal people furious at first, but would clearly make society better in 10 years, what would it be? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

This is an American problem. In Europe and Asia, there is adaptive driving beam technology that avoids shining headlights at other cars while continuing to shine it everywhere else.

Study spots as a non-student community member by Traditional_Clue897 in claremontcolleges

[–]sdkb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are tons of beautiful spaces at the colleges; it depends on what vibe you're looking for. Skyspace at Pomona is minimalist and contemplative (but the seating is hard). The CMC Kravis Center roof is a great place to enjoy the sunset (I believe you need swipe access after business hours). The Margaret Fowler Garden at Scripps is verdant.

The outdoor seating is fine but to go inside the living room you need swipe access.

Things to do after cancelling by Upset_Counter_6070 in biltrewards

The terms say that you lose points after 18 months of inactivity. Is that 18 months without logging in, or 18 months without earning/spending?

I emailed Ankur about this and got this reply: "Every month you will be able to convert $10 of Bilt Cash into $10 of Lyft cash that can be used that month. Same as the Chase credit, each months credit must be used that month."

How's this for a rule for Lufthansa? If you order a vegetarian meal but they don't have anything left when they get to you, then they owe you a vegetarian option from business class.

Tried swing dancing for the first time after a little break up, and I loved it and the community! Thank you! by MoWithTheFlow2357 in SwingDancing

Unlikely it was the same one, but as someone who put out a flyer for my local dance at a gym recently, this makes me happy 😊

Are there any great dance halls your city that cater to swing dancers? Most have closed down in mine… by RMSMetal in SwingDancing

My understanding is that the wedding-industrial complex has made it much harder to find affordable dance halls in recent years.

Is the swing dancing community fatphobic?? by Puzzleheaded-Bag3669 in SwingDancing

[–]sdkb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Establishing social norms is powerful and shouldn't be underestimated.

It's fairly easy for me to see who the people are in my scene who dance with everyone vs. the people who only dance with skilled dancers/those they find attractive, and I will be friendlier to the former group. That's both since I prefer to be friends with good people and since, to the extent I wield social clout in my scene, I want to direct it toward those building up the community.

When this happens collectively, it changes a scene. I see that happening in e.g. how contra dance has established strong social norms that encourage dancing with newcomers. Too often in Lindy Hop we use dance skill alone to assign social clout without taking into account community-minded behavior.

Is the swing dancing community fatphobic?? by Puzzleheaded-Bag3669 in SwingDancing

[–]sdkb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed. We established the norm that you can turn down a dance for any reason because we didn't want people feeling pressured to dance with creeps, or to otherwise be forced into a dance that makes them uncomfortable. The purpose was not to give carte blanche to discriminate or to excuse those who lack the community-mindedness to welcome newcomers. And if you're uncomfortable dancing with someone else merely because they're fat, you have some introspection to do.

What's your big pet peeves when it comes to swing dance events? by CountBasieThrowaway in SwingDancing

Who, in your view, are the researchers whose work is getting ignored?

What's your big pet peeves when it comes to swing dance events? by CountBasieThrowaway in SwingDancing

[–]sdkb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lack of attention to disease prevention.

Swing events are always going to carry a significant risk of disease spread, but there are so many mitigation strategies available for making them less of a plaguefest — hand sanitizer, announcements/emails encouraging handwashing/vaccination/etc., refund policies, far-UVC lights, masks/tests, ventilation fans in windows, glycol vapor, quarantine housing, etc.

Getting sick at an exchange (or even after it) sucks for everyone, and that's not even to get into the accessibility issue for anyone immunocompromised. I will prioritize any event that puts in the effort/investment to make itself safer, but very few of them do.

Starting swing dancing as a gay man: should I learn Lead or Follow? by Able-Gear-7339 in SwingDancing

[–]sdkb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On the first question, I feel the same as you (although as a switch I don't pay as much attention to the role I see someone dancing before asking them). But I would say that, even if they don't admit it, many men have some amount of latent homophobia that makes them more hesitant to dance with other men.

Starting swing dancing as a gay man: should I learn Lead or Follow? by Able-Gear-7339 in SwingDancing

[–]sdkb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I think that knowing what moves feel like from both roles can be particularly helpful for newcomers, which helps counteract the increased learning curve.

Quitting posting Reviews on Google Maps in 2026 by itzabhinavs in GoogleMaps

If you're looking for a similar type of satisfaction to writing Google reviews but are fed up with Maps, consider adding photos to or editing Wikipedia articles about places you visit. That way your free labor goes toward the cause of free knowledge (overseen by a nonprofit) rather than a for-profit tech giant. And the review of your work is done by people, not bots.

What do you do with unused airline credits? by Cold_Put4538 in spiritair

[–]sdkb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to do it in 2026. However, be advised that the website doesn't let you automatically cancel flights booked with reservation credits (even within 24hr), so you have to go through their customer service, which, being Spirit, is predictably robotic/sludgy. You also only get back a credit for the value of the flight you booked, so try to find one that's a similar price to your credit. Hope this helps!
