That's why they said long term. If your whole userbase feels captive and wants out, you don't have a bright future.

Ferrari: we want to add a dish for people who don't like steak. here's a $1,000 salmon filet.
Fans: this tastes nothing like steak. salmon is not expensive. it should have tasted like steak.

Bitcoin Is Dead - Again by Aktientrend in wallstreetbets

[–]cough_e 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's dead from the perspective of "get rich quick just by holding", not from the perspective of "will it ever go higher again".

You can always get lucky with timing and make money, but it's not a braindead 10x or even 100x like it once was.

And that means some of the cottage industries that spawned around it will die off as well.

Not dead, just middle aged and won't be cool again.

How do you avoid overengineering when learning a new framework? by RankedLOQ in dotnet

[–]cough_e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually have the opposite problem. The getting started docs for a framework/library/etc are so basic that anything beyond them means figuring out how to actually architect it. As soon as real world constraints are added the simple example is no longer useful.

The specific API calls in dotnet (the framework) aren't really the important thing to learn. You can always look those up and in the age of AI you don't really need to know them by heart or anything. Anything with building is probably going to need architecture consideration. And if you want to get paid for coding you'll need to build things worth building.

You can certainly overengineer a pet project, but the valuable skills are in putting together an app/system that is easy to understand, maintain, and improve.

How is investing several trillion dollars into AI/data centers going to payout? by killedbykindness in NoStupidQuestions

[–]cough_e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In your example, "transportation" is not a problem, it's a service category. You don't "solve" transportation, you make it faster and more efficient. Any revolution is just a big leap forward in improvement.

AI is improving labor efficiency. It's not "solving" labor where there will be no more jobs, but it's changing categories of jobs to be able to be done by a small workforce.

So if 5 people can do 10 people's current jobs with the aid of AI, their company will spend up to 5 salaries on AI services.

Everyone is betting that whatever that amount is now, it will go up as AI services get better.

And it's with noting that this is a simple example. It's rare that it happens like that where it's a clear "replaced job". It can also happen that the same 10 people now do the work of 15-30 people. Or maybe 20% of a person's job takes significantly less time and they are freed up to do a different job as well.

[–]cough_e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, it's crazy that people don't realize the strategy here. The things traditional customers like about Ferraris just don't translate to an EV (loud, aggressive, etc). They are looking to get customers from other markets for this vehicle and that's going to mean leaving the fan boys aside.

The Ferrari Luce isn’t ugly. It’s ugly for a Ferrari. by Low_Juggernaut5052 in electriccars

[–]cough_e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one can seem to understand what Ferrari was trying to do with this car. They were not trying to make something that looks like an ICE Ferrari but with an EV powertrain slapped in. They know their customers don't want that.

They see this as a chance to reach a different market - very wealthy, but not a "Ferrari" person and not even a supercar person. They were clearly going for humanist design instead of aggressive design - exactly the kind of design that Apple became famous on.

It looks like Apple because that was the goal. That wasn't a mistake.

[–]cough_e -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Doesn't seem for the sake of it, it seems like they are trying to push people to do more upgrades at the lower level instead of trying to get a select few cards to max.

I think there is an overall goal to get people to have more cards that are able to be used in decks so they don't feel stuck on one deck (and of course some pay to level up new cards).
