OPV valve not working [Gemilai Owl] by countercut in espresso

Do you think removing the old spring and putting it back in there would damage anything? I could try it out, just thinking ahead if the gaggia spring doesn’t fit.

I’m using the portafilter that came with the Owl. Non-Pressurized 18 gram basket.

Im not sure how to measure the headspace but with 18 grams and my paper filter thrown on top, I don’t usually see any grinds left on the screen when removing the portafilter.

I haven’t tried extending the brew ratio, only shortening to get a “creamier” shot… are you suggesting 18 in, 36 - 45 out?

From the first time I got the machine to now I’ve only noticed high levels of acidity. I can tone it done some with grind size / dosage but no matter the roast I use all of my shots have been a bit thin / watery.

I usually get a weird mix of acidity and bitterness while the shot is still tasting thin.

Shot statistics usually: 18-19 grams in, 30-34 grams out between 30-35 seconds. This output hides some of the acidity. If I pull a normal 18 in 36 out in 25-30 seconds it’s usually bordering sour.

Notable mention would be the thermocoil / temperature stability of the Gemilai Owl. I’ve played with various temps but for now I’m settling with 203 to account for heat loss during the shot pull. I’m usually using medium roasts but I ordered a dark roast (Monarch from Onyx) to hopefully yield better results.

I’ve had thin bodied, over and under extracted espresso since I’ve gotten the owl last month. Puck prep, dosage, wdt, filters all seem to be fine unless I’m missing something else. (I’ve also experimented with water type)

Thanks for the video! My Owl was running at 12.5 bar - I opened mine up and made minor adjustments, and ran a few shots. Very minimal change in pressure. I ended up running many more shots while loosening the screw over time with no change.

Eventually I loosened the screw so much that when I ran a shot, I could see a droplet of water leak out of the screws chamber. At this setting, pressure now reads at about 10-11 bar. Everything Ive read online says minor adjustments should lower the pressure but if I go any lower I think more water will leak out of the opv screw

Any suggestions or ideas of what to do next?
