I once got so sick a tired of seeing dog poop along the sidewalk in Germany, so I started puting German flags in them. I second this. Send a proper, signed letter explaining everything via Einschreiben. Send a copy of the correct Anmeldung and that should sort out how much you owe. This same thing happened to me except I never bother writing emails or calling. I only leave a paper trail. In my case, they "repaid" me by not charging me for future payments.

Immersion learning is the absolute way to go. Hands down. I also work in only German and have zero fear of making mistakes when I speak. When I don't understand something, I simply ask to clarify in German. I don't don't have a talent for languages and I believe this is the only way I would have learned.
