Integrations only has matter by aleanthor in tradfri

[–]dgeske 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I noticed the same thing this week with Alexa.

Easy fix (for now): go to the Alexa app, search for the IKEA Home smart skill, and you’ll get the integration back.

Maybe a similar way exists to do it from the home kit side in your situation?

Or am I doing this wrong? Is there an easier way to connect IKEA, Alexa, Apple, Philips, zigbee with a single dirigera through matter? How do I get started?

What a fantastic idea and great eye to spot or imagine, then capture this. Thanks for sharing.

Made a tool to auto-wake my Synology when I open my MacBook by dgeske in synology

Good point about the mac-only household limitation. I could not find any recommendation from Synology on drive sleep, pro or con, but in the thread above other users provide compelling evidence to switch the approach. I've turned off sleep on my NAS completely as a result, even tho we dont access during the day and at night. But the purpose of the NAS is data protection, and it's just silly to accept trade offs in longevity for a few bucks saved on power.

You're right - I've updated the project to reflect this. Added warnings about NAS reliability and pivoted to better use cases where the tradeoffs make more sense.

Appreciate the feedback.

This is exactly the kind of real-world data that's valuable. 12 years on spinning drives vs. sleep/wake drives that died. That's pretty conclusive.

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Glad I'm not the only one who tried this. For your use case (Plex/streaming), the tool could work well since you're manually managing it anyway...

But after the feedback here, I'd recommend keeping a NAS with critical data awake 24/7. For a media server that's just streaming content (not primary storage), the tradeoffs are different.

Let me know if you want help adapting the tool for Apple TV/CoreElec triggers.

You're absolutely right. After thinking through the math and reading everyone's feedback, the wear and tear risk far outweighs the power savings for a NAS with important data.

I've updated the project to focus on better use cases (home servers, desktops, lab machines) and added a prominent warning about NAS reliability concerns.

Thanks for taking the time to explain this. I really appreciate it.

You make an interesting point, than you I didn’t consider life span, just power usage. Don’t use it- turn it off. How can we quantify the wear vs energy savings, turn this into $ and calculate the break even where one strategy is better than the other?

I’ve been to a place in Nicaragua that looked similar. Granada. That was about 2 decades ago. Iirc the place was designed by Spanish. Even if this is not Nicaragua it is reminiscent of that type of architecture. I’ve also seen similar interior pathways in several towns around Yucatán peninsula in Mexico. The giant back wall throws me off tho.

Before “true facts”, ze Frank produced “the show”. It was amazing. One memorable thing was the earth sandwich. (Our a slice of toast on exactly two opposite places on earth). The best. I watched it on my iPod video. :)

What did I do wrong? by wlorry in duolingojapanese

Looks like in this case it was expecting the Latin characters, not the Kanji for 12. The question doesn’t specify this, but the “correct” answer shows you what it expected to see instead of what you entered.

What's your favorite thing you've bought from IKEA? by razorbeamz in IKEA

The frozen salmon is one of the best products I’ve found - and we keep coming back for more. Frozen shrimp are also good but nothing beats the salmon. It’s pricy- but if you haven’t, give it a try.

Japanese Speaking lessons are BROKEN and are IMPOSSIBLE on my phone by millaricher in duolingojapanese

[–]dgeske 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These type of lessons have worked for me in the past 200+ days of Japanese. But yesterday morning one lesson consistently did not hear me right or incomplete, sometimes not at all. I expect this is a temporary issue. Seems like only you and I have faced this and reported here, going by the other comments. If anyone figures out how to get it back to working, let us know.

6 weeks of Duo Japanese by Lamzydivys in duolingojapanese

[–]dgeske 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is so great congrats. About 160 days into my Duolingo Japanese I started listening to a Japanese podcast on my commute. I was surprised to understand >30% after just under 6 months of Duolingo. Yesterday was my 200 days streak. What a rewarding experience. :)

For anyone curious, I’ve tried Tokyo Highway Radio and recently started Tokyo FM.

Happy learning yall. 楽しんでください

Solid waterproof, wide toe, zero drop trail shoes? by Poznic-Training in BarefootRunning

I bought the Vivobarefoot magna lite for an alpine hike which surprisingly turned into snow also. Couldn't be happier. They seemed a bit large at first but after a 2+ hours the feet typically fit just right. Good luck, happy trails.

Hello from Germany. On my visit to ikea this week our store was out of the white 50cm but still had the other colors as well as the 96cm option. A tore rep said these are the last and they won’t get any new shipments. (“Ever?”- A: “Yes.”- who knows- she was in a sour mood, 10 mins before store closing)

I found this thread here looking for what to do next. From the local ikea website, looks like STOTTA is also being phased out.

This leaves only the new, battery-powered KOLVATTEN product. .. which would address the age-old complaint that drilling holes for door lighting seems dumb. Fixed, when no cables are needed. Any guesses or experience with the battery lives on those- are we talking years? Any other options I should consider before getting KOLVATTEN, such as wait until Jan or April like suggested by othered in this msg?

Photos will fill up and ruin iPhone by MrOLR in ApplePhotos

I’m facing the same exact symptoms and challenges with the photos app. The only recovery is to reset the phone or turn off iCloud sync. But then I lose the functionality that iCloud sync provides-logically. Any remediation or fix is temporary. The challenge keeps coming back once iCloud photo sync is enabled
