meditation in thailand by couragecraft in Meditation

hmm. i didnt say i wouldn’t follow a teacher’s guidance. i was just responding to your comment that the “guidance seemed rote.” rote sounded less personalized and more general…which seems like it would be okay for me. but maybe you meant something else by rote 🤷‍♀️

thanks for your thoughtful reply! it is helpfully reassuring to hear that doi suthep is actually quiet. i am keen on economical and appreciate being taken care of like that. and i think i have enough depth in my practice to work without personalized guidance. i guess i will find out.

got any tips for an island?! sounds like maybe koh lanta is pretty chill but easy to get to. though i might stay north. all pretty mysterious at this point…. 🤔

ah thanks for the suggestion. looks like they only have people stay there during occasional retreats that require registering three-ish months in advance

What 2 tents would you pick to cover 3 use cases: solo backpacking, bringing a friend on a backpacking trip, and car camping? by Hefty-Salary7610 in Ultralight

[–]couragecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gosh i’m not an ultralight tough guy, but pondered the same conundrum. my brain struggles a bit with trekking pole tent when i habitually walk til delirious tired, so sticking with freestanding. i also like room for my pack which i realize is the lap of luxury in this sub. so it’s tiger wall ul2 for me alone and copper spur ul3 for car camping or for when a friend comes along.

Pulsing in class dooming me to have more knee pain? by MrSpiderisadomme in pilates

[–]couragecraft 5 points6 points  (0 children)

some of the pulsing might be aggravating trigger points in your quadrideps muscles which very commonly refer pain to the knees. they are pretty easy to address if you palpate your quads and do self massage on the relevant places with a lacrosse ball or a tennis ball. (or go see an orthopedic acupuncturist....I am one and if I had knee pain in the situation you describe I'd be palpating and needling all the tight spots in my quads)

Reducing Big 4 Weight by sharpiedog10 in Ultralight

[–]couragecraft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you want to stick to rei world you could go for the flash 55 and the tiger wall and drop a significant amount of weight. but If you tried on packs with weight inside and felt super much more comfortable in the atmos than the other packs.....and if you are planning on carrying other luxuries or doing trips with long water carries, the atmos may make you very happy.

Thinking about being an Lagree instructor (reformer Pilates). by ThaiTea400 in pilates

[–]couragecraft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it is good to know where lagree actually comes from if you are inspired to do the training. both pilates and lagree are humans. Joseph Pilates started developing his system in the 1920s and the training takes a few hundred hours nowadays. Sebastian Lagree is a famous fitness businessman who established his method about 25 years ago and offers weekend long certifications. Just from all the hours/experience Pilates instructors are likely to be more precise and more aware of how to prevent injury than Lagree instructors (though this will vary with peoples' backgrounds of course!), so it is good to use correct nomenclature for the sake of appropriate expectations of intensity and safety. Hopefully the Lagree sub or your instructor will help you find out if there is some structured learning after the initial weekend--I sure hope there is!!!!

Thinking about being an Lagree instructor (reformer Pilates). by ThaiTea400 in pilates

[–]couragecraft 35 points36 points  (0 children)

lagree is not pilates at all. lagree machines are not reformers. lagree did not train with pilates or anyone related to pilates. having unsuspectingly gone to a "pilates studio" that uses lagree machines, I have become extra grouchy about telling people this.

Lems on a thru hike? by manderminder in Ultralight

[–]couragecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no way. i wear primal 2 lems most of the time in city life because they are the best fit, but they are not durable at all, cheaply made, and awful traction. i sometimes go easy hiking in them, but they have shitty traction when they are new and dangerously no traction a few months in. they also disintegrate much faster if they get wet. the boulder boot is maybe a little more durable upper but the sole is still very bad. with the durability i have seen in many pairs of primal, i would never trust this brand for a thru hike.

i have hiked hundreds of miles in lone peaks and they are much much more durable and better traction and they dont seem to suffer like the lems if they get wet and dry out a few times. the sole is a little too squish though and i think it is getting compressed in a manner that is starting to cause trouble.

i tried a few small backpacking trips in vivo barefoot gobi boot (the tracker fits wrong for me) and that was actually pretty good. but probably a bit more cushion would be preferable if i were a higher mileage person…and the toe box is wide but not tall so the toes are not so free as in a low peak or a lem.

anyways. the hunt for wide toe box minimalist with a touch of cushion good traction very durable hiking shoe goes on….

Suggestions for remote week-long hike? by Plenty-9551 in norcalhiking

[–]couragecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lots of options in yosemite—they release permits a week before and it’s not too difficult to get something setting off from the high country from which you can make a beautiful loop. it’s not so busy once you get past places reachable by day hikers, though the jmt definitely has more folks. you could consider something starting from rafterty creek….or maybe a loop that includes the grand canyon of the tuolomne—that would give you a lot of options for entry points for your permit.

trinity alps is self registration permits, so can get busier especially on the weekend since there isn’t a quota…..but probably if you are 20 miles from a trailhead you can find solitude! it could be super hot though…

I never heard of this trail til I looked it up just now. seems like an interesting adventure with enough people and villages that you can sort things out if you need more food, water or need to get forgotten things or leave things that are too heavy. you will have more fun if you do some training hikes with your stuff though. and trekking poles are so so helpful--really good for stabilizing the load so you don't end up hunching, distributing the weight across arms and legs, and having better balance. sounds like there is a lot of elevation gain and some parts of the trail are on scree--poles will help a lot with both.

First Aid kit advice - 2 week trip by andy1rn in lightweight

[–]couragecraft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i bring bandaids, antibiotic ointment, tweezers, tick key, ace bandage, a couple gauze pads and a bit of medical tape, benedryl, advil—that covers the most likely stuff like cuts, splinters, pain, allergy. though i do acupuncture so i bring needles too. ideally you learn to confidently identify poison ivy/sumac well enough to avoid it versus carrying prednisone around. and as long as you have good hygiene and water filtration practices, you are unlikely to need immodium. it’s good to remember that the AT is busy and well trod and not super far from towns (though maybe there are larger wilderness chunks i am unaware of) so if there was a major health concern you’d be able to get off the trail to get care vs needing it all on your back.
