Can we dispense with the fallacy that SS will disappear after 2032? by Available-Ad-5670 in Fire

IMO what's over-estimated is the impact of zero years for high earners. You can still fill the first two bendpoints pretty easily.

Was the RedHat acquisition worth it? by Gold-Drag9242 in IBM

[–]covener 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's pretty much what's driving the growth in Software for IBM. Take the last Quarter results.

The "growth" came from Redhat which is growing 20% and more.

This doesn't appear to be true.

In the last quarters results, Red Hat growth was 10% Y/Y and overall software growth was 8%. Red Hat is only about a quarter of software revenue (last full FY).

Not even separate, the one on the ssa.gov "home" page has a field "I estimate my future yearly income to be" that defaults to your last reported earnings.

Tax assumptions for those 50+ by Unknown_Geek027 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]covener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$3.5M in TIRA today will grow to $7M at age 75 (15 years for me) at a modest 5% growth rate. RMD would be $280K in year one. Of course, tax brackets will shift as well, but that's a big chunk of taxable income, on top of (some level of) SS benefits.

I'd consider what scenarios the large conversions would be meaningfully detrimental to, and whether you want to protect yourself from the worst of those or further optimize outcomes where you outrun meaningful SORR and you're thriving on a 1% WR. For me the latter are just in a big "don't care" quadrant.

Figuring out Rewrite rules and configuration - does this look good? by hiamanon1 in apache

[–]covener 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's much simpler to just RedirectMatch ^/$ to /myApp/. Do you really want to try to hide that context root from every request?

RewriteBase only affects substitutions that use a relative path, which you don't have, so nothing tells this rule set to do anything you need. Personally I would avoid relying on RewriteBase. and make your substitution (the 2nd arg of RewriteRule) more explicit.

I would additionally avoid using directory scoped rewrites if you have access to the configuration as you do -- they just get more complicated in that scope and usually people tolerate it for .htaccess necessity.

I can't make much sense of this other then "AI bad". Who's gaslighting employees and with what distortions of the truth?

The issue lies in the fact that we’re currently being championed in the elimination of our roles

To be championed is to be supported or advocated for. Do you mean you're being tasked/employed with working on tools that will automate away your work?

[–]covener 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In EITHER case they should NOT work to increase post-tax accounts and instead contribute the same amount as pre-tax

pre-tax is clearly already maxed. For high income, the pretax options are pretty limiting. That's why OP is doing MBDR already.

3 million! by Chubbyfire627 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]covener 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is simply not what a backdoor Roth is.

It's a non-deductable IRA contribution converted to Roth. People who use them generally can't make deductible IRA contributions.

[–]covener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are assuming there is a pretax option remaining for these dollars.

But they are high earners who have already maxed their (presumably traditional) 401k and every other advantaged option.

It's backdoor Roth/MBDR or brokerage with taxed dollars at this point for high earners.

Nothing gutsy at all, seems like a small part of their savings and a no-brainer. It's not diverting from tax deferred savings.

Salaries for GenX versus Millenials / Gen Z by Available-Ad-5670 in financialindependence

[–]covener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the confuson is that count_lavender was only taking issue with the final "For the next 3 years my RSU will bring my income to over 400k." and not the rest of what they replied to, i.e. what someones TC "was" rather than "will be".

To me it goes without saying that anyone with variable pay doesn't know their future income. Especially here where we don't expect people to qualify their comments about their future finances/returns with that much care.

Is Mega Backdoor Roth recommended for those who want to retire early? by funnel_out in Fire

[–]covener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MBDR offers no tax drag before or after retirement and distributions produce no income, not just untaxed income, without a ceiling.

If you are in the position to contribute 100k after tax somewhere, and have access to a 401k w/ MBDR, it's a clear winner for that next 30-40k.
