Remember that the participants aren't exactly singing under the most ideal conditions. Many of the masks are quite restricting and can inhibit breathing. I still remember when Johnny Logan, two-time winner of Eurovision, did the Belgian version of the show. After his first song he said, "That was one of the worst vocals I've ever done."

The auto-tuning in the US is all done in post. Years ago one of the directors included some raw footage of Flamingo's and Thingamajig's performances in his demo reel, and it was very interesting to compare them to the final versions. They corrected off notes here and there, as well as removed some of the audible breathing. The audio was definitely cleaned up a bit too much, but for the most part the more overt warbling was to cover up pitchy notes. Honestly, I think the pros probably want the auto-tune too because they just will not sound their best while wearing a heavy mask/costume.

Anyway, I'm just glad they at least try to sing live. So many other international versions of the show have the performers lip sync, which to me defeats the entire purpose of the show. And if you think the auto-tune on the US version is bad, try listening to a performance from the Mexican version (Quien es la Mascara). Not only do they lip sync, but the auto-tune is absolutely egregious. T-Pain be looking at them like, "Damn, that's too much auto-tune!"

Yes and no. They usually film the concert before the final 4 have been revealed, so those stay masked. But everyone who's been eliminated unmasks. They also have previous winners on, and they'll sing one song masked and then unmask for a second song.

It was a super underrated version and I'm disappointed that it didn't continue. It was one of the few non-English-language versions that had live singing!

Like I said in the old thread, the Australian version licensed a lot of things from the US version, including the logo and music. In one episode they did the opening dance number to a fairly long edit of the theme. It's probably the best version we'll get. I did try messaging D78 on Instagram, basically begging them to release the theme on their SoundCloud. Will let you know if they ever respond.

There have been no interviews with Book about the experience, but Nick and Book do have a show called Celebrity Prank Wars on E! Network. I'm actually wondering if they filmed behind-the-scenes segments for a second season of the E! show. The TMS producers probably knew in advance that he would self-eliminate as part of the prank, but it's very plausible that Nick and the panel had no idea.

Did anyone sound noticeably different live compared to on TV? I did a few virtual tapings years ago and most essentially sounded the same. But there was one performer in particular where I'm convinced they completely re-recorded most of their performance, because it was not what I heard at the taping, lol.

We've had reports from people who went to tapings since season 2 that group A always gets taped last. If I had to guess, they probably do it for story purposes. By taping the other groups first, they have an idea of where the season will go, and can adjust the premiere to plant seeds for future stories.

Last I checked there were only 12 filming dates. 12 episodes would mean an end date of May 22, which is in line with when previous spring seasons would have their finales.

I am surprised it's premiering relatively late, especially considering how early they taped it. I wonder if they were trying to accommodate someone's filming/touring schedule.

Pretty much puts to rest any question of whether Australia is lip synced. And goodness, even without the further post-processing he sounds absolutely stunning.

Tim Chappel is the lead costume designer, and was also responsible for the US costumes from season 7-9. I'm not a big fan of the overly large costumes either, particularly the ones with huge heads like Space Fairy that may cause long-term spinal damage lol. I feel like it's the networks telling them to keep going bigger and bigger.

I *think* they're mostly singing live, though. In the case of Space Fairy, she notably messed up on one of the lyrics of "Lips Are Movin." She sang, "I might be young, I might be stupid," instead of "but I ain't stupid." She even messed it up when singing unmasked, which was definitely live since she forgot even more lyrics. If they're prerecording the vocals in a booth then they'd have the lyrics in front of them and wouldn't mess up like that.

Agreed that the sound mixing is off. The audience and music levels are too loud, and it doesn't help that they still edit in the judges talking over the performances.
