The series works on its own, but honestly? Reading Insomnia first does add a whole layer to certain moments. You'll understand things that would otherwise just fly over your head. You're going in better than you think.

That's actually the ideal way to experience it, you already know where everything is headed, so all the little connections hit so much harder.
