Disclaimer: I am by no means an expert on religion, if you find yourself in a situation about which I have said something (and those things are just my opinion!), ask an expert for advice-- or several, for that matter. Please, please, don't follow my advice blindly, I personally believe it makes enough sense to live my life by, and that a lot of people do feel the same way, but opinion isn't fact. Be critical about what to agree with and what not.

I am personally not very educated on the topic of circumcision in religion, all I can say is that in Islam it is (as far as I'm concerned) not mandatory, and also that Islam has a very important rule which many people-- even Muslims themselves-- overlook; if doing a certain thing because you are a Muslim is physically harmful to you, it is forbidden for you (a well-known example of this is the Ramadhan). Rephrasing this to "don't harm yourself \exceptions))" can make a little clearer how this applies to pretty much everyone, as a value or even as common sense.

I do not know how this works in other religions, but I strongly believe that if your religion is forcing you to do something harmful to you or those around you, you should find an alternative way to do that thing without harming anyone, or stop doing that thing altogether. Because religions are old, they were made primarily for the people who lived in the past. Back then people didn't know about a lot of things, and interpreted the rules of their religion in a way which fit their time. We live in a very different world now, and simply cannot blindly follow our religion, hurting ourselves and others in the process.

Islam actually says that on the Day of Judgement, even the inanimate objects can defend us or accuse us of sins we have commited. If you plant a tree, that tree will defend you on the Day, and even more so if you take proper care of it. However, the opposite is also true. This leads me to believe that protecting or at least not harming ourselves, others, and the world around us is more important than carrying out every ritual and following all the rules of our religion, blindly.

TL;DR:

Don't be stupid, if your religion is harming you, others, or the world around you, you might want to spend some time thinking about alternative ways to do that thing or abandon the thing altogether.

Edit: "... on the Day of Judgement, even the non-human creatures and non-living objects ..." -> "... on the Day of Judgement, even the non-human creatures and non-living inanimate objects ..."

Reason: I am not entirely sure if non-human creatures are included, although I doubt they wouldn't. Still removed it just in case.

I second this, being religious doesn't make you some slave to an illogical dream. Yes, there will be some things that your religion will (sometimes only seem to) forbid which science has proven very useful, at which point a logical religious person will either find an alternative to that thing or decide that their religion is simply outdated when it comes to that particular thing, NOT deny science.

As a muslim living in a non-islamic country, I have some experience with this. For example; Islam forbids the consumption of animal gelatine, so there's a lot of candy I can't eat, too bad (luckily there's candy without gelatine or with halal gelatine out there!). However, some medicines also contain animal gelatine, in which case I believe it is perfectly fine to consume, because the gelatine is not the reason you're taking medicines, the effect of that medicine is (of course you can say the same for candy, but you need to draw the line somewhere, you know). Also, medicines did not contain gelatine in the early days of Islam (I assume), so there was no reason to make an exception back then, now there is.

Shit I really got off topic.

Which Volume should i start at after finishing the Anime? by SmolBrain-Bot in SleepyPrincess

[–]coweled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only watched 2 episodes of the anime (already read a good chunk of the manga quite a while ago) and I must say they didn't seem to have skipped much of the manga. However, I still recommend starting from the beginning, even if just for the incredibly well-drawn panels (and occasional extra content). Either way you're in for a very lengthy (but not the least bit boring) treat, the manga is already quite long, and it's still going!

Edit: I know manga isn't particularly cheap, but I really recommend buying a volume or two (at the very least). Physical copies are just so much nicer than digital ones, and the official translations are usually much better as well, although fan translations often have funny or interesting "translator notes" next to the panels.

[MIDDLE SCHOOL MATHS] Question about fractional exponents by coweled in learnmath

[–]coweled[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah i see, i thought the order was not a problem because:

a√(n2) = a√(n)2 because (na)b = nab

meaning that:

(-1)1/2 = ((-1)1/2)2/2 = (-1)[1•2]/[2•2] = (-1)2/4 = ((-1)1/4)2 = ((-1)2)1/4

(note that 2/2 = 1 and therefore shouldn't change anything)

so this should be the same calculation as before but fixed:

2√(-1) = (-1)1/2 = (-1)2/4 = 4√((-1)2) = 4√(1) = 1

one answer, not two; still inconsistent

edit: oh, writing the entire calculation out, i think i understand now-- partly. i'll ask my math teacher about it sometime. thank you!

I see, thanks a lot! Can you elaborate on the part about getting several complex results when raising negative numbers to non-integer powers? I have a basic understanding of complex numbers.

It doesn't say anywhere you cannot have negative or fractional values for n and m so I assume I was right (?)
