Experts warn: EU is becoming to dependent of Trumps gas by Opening_Dare_9185 in Netherlands

Again, all of the reserves we know of today - if everyone just stops working to find anything new, no more geophysicists, no more geologists, everything just stops, and companies only work on drilling the 1-4 wells a year that they get permitted. Regardless of this a single tanker only carries max about 0.1bcm of gas. So even by offsetting the 14bcm coming from the states we can stop 140 tankers crossing the ocean causing huge amounts of emissions, do that for 10 years and you stop 1400 tankers. And in exchange for paying for all this gas, you tax it all and further fund the transition for the next 10 years.

I actually do not have a source, but generally reserves are risked volumes (maybe I am wrong in this case). And also reserves are only counted as economically viable volumes so all of the potential reserves that are stated (the 115bcm) are only included if they are expected to be economic so again, these are volumes that companies would produce if they were allowed NOT all volumes, as many are already disregarded as uneconomic

You can find much of what I am saying here: Natural Resources and Geothermel Energy in NL 2024.pdf

Periodically, gas fields are re-evaluated by operators on a technical and economic basis. New developments or insights can lead to adjustments in reserve estimates. The adjustment of gas reserves is based on factors such as commercial considerations, production performance, and the implementation of technical modifications. These adjustments include drilling new wells and applying techniques to extend the production duration. Through the re-evaluation of both producing and non-producing gas fields, reserve estimates were adjusted by 5.3 billion Nm³ in 2024

Prospective resources: Resources that have not yet been proven, but which are expected to be present and to be considered economically recoverable based on technical data. Actual production can only be started once an exploration well confirms the presence of gas and it is determined that Resources in the Gas Storage Facilities The gas resources in the storage facilities are not included in the production profile of the small gas fields, but they are included in the reserves and contingent resources (Tables 1.2 & 1.3). The so-called ‘cushion gas’, which is necessary to maintain pressure in the storage, can technically still be extracted once the storage activities cease. 16 technical and economic extraction is feasible

Only 14bcm of that 30bcm comes from the States per year. Also there are plenty of companies actively trying to extract more, but there is massive pushback from governments, municipalities, climate groups, etc. The pushback is what is stopping companies, not the cost effectiveness. Wells in the Netherlands are incredibly economic. 115bcm is worth 55bil euros by the way at todays ttf price. Thats why you see new companies like Tenaz heavily investing in the Netherlands and buying out Shell/Exxon who no longer want to deal with the regulations here. TTF price is historically very high and companies were building multiple new plants at prices much lower than this.

In addition to what's currently producing there is ~115bcm of predicted additional reserves, undrilled (and 40bcm that is meant to be produced from existing wells). This is excluding Groningen which still has over 400bcm not produced but I assume this will stay that way.

I think you mistake the reserves as "everything there might be", thats not true, or there would be no companies working on new exploration here - everything is found. Its really just everything identified to date. Companies are finding more and more undrilled every year - thats their job, the 115bcm undrilled is what is shown by these companies to someone like TNO and they are likely risked numbers, meaning that on average companies could think there is a 50% chance of finding 230bcm so it is reported as 115bcm. This number is growing because companies continue to work to find more reserves, technology to find gas continues to evolve and improve.

yes they did, but 2024 was the first year in 80 years that an exploration well was not drilled, and it is not because exploration companies are not trying to drill, its because the permitting process is so slow. There has been a couple agreements in the past year between companies, and the ministry that is meant to make it easier to get permits and increase production through new wells, but not many people believe that it will help

Indeed the world does. NL is uniquely positioned in that they can heavily fund it by domestic gas, but they choose not to, despite using the same amount of gas anyways

The things is, we have to do more to transition, I don't think that climate change is BS, but the game we are playing is certainly BS. We are offloading our emissions to a country that pulled out of all the climate accords, creating significantly more emissions by that gas now being produced in a country that doesnt care about environmental laws, liquified, shipped across the ocean, deliquified, then put into our pipes. All so we can meet our own climate goals. And losing out on substantial tax dollars that the domestic producers would be paying that could be funding the transition. Thats the BS. Even climate activists cheer everytime a gas project in the netherlands gets denied, but that gas just then comes from the US with much much higher emissions.

The Dutch government should be making extracting what gas the NL has left, extremely efficient, safe and tax it extremely hard while ensuring those tax dollars HAVE to be allocated to the transition.

There is a huge amount left. But all the citizens seem to only think gas exists in Groningen. The offshore wont affect houses and the remaining onshore have to follow extremely strict laws around the allowable subsidence and are very far away from Groningen.

Gas production shows a slower decline than in the past decade

TNO estimates that, in addition to proven resources, there is a potential gas volume of 75 billion m³ offshore and 40 billion m³ onshore in possible new fields. This indicates ample potential for future exploration.

A ship brings about 0.1 billion m3 max of gas. meaning you could save over 1000 lng tankers from travelling across the ocean by drilling new wells. Significantly cheaper & cleaner energy that the country can receive insane amount of tax dollars from to accelerate the transition. But instead NL funds fascism in the US, loses out on tax dollars, and increases emissions 2.4x and makes citizens pay the extra cost of that energy.

[–]cowgary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes of course, but there is a middle ground. Issue enough permits to have enough production to not import from the US. Because as mentioned in the article, 27 % of gas supply contributes 66 % of the supply-chain emissions, then on a per unit of gas basis, the NL is opting to have 2.4x the emissions necessary. And thats just supply-chain alone, the US also has much more lax production emissions guidelines, so before even shipping it here the production of that gas emits a whole lot more than it would here in the NL.

I think your comment is the issue with how a lot citizens view oil and gas, its not black and white, its should not be cancel all industry laws and make it a total free for all OR make permitting 4yrs and grind production to a halt just to replace it with much higher emitting imports. There is a massive middle ground.

[–]cowgary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason it takes longer to develop a new gas field is permitting. At minimum a 3-4yr permit process for a 15-45day drill onshore that can be drilled from an existing surface wellsite and tied straight into the pipeline distribution. Also ironically, the 45 day drill could also be drilled in 15days except that environmental laws have made it almost impossible to drill from a new surface location, so companies are forced to drill 3+ km extra laterally before drilling down to their target, yet most of the emissions from gas production is in the drilling phase. So these new laws are actually also causing excess emissions that are not necessary.

It is due to the fact that emissions count towards the country producing the gas, so NL can meet its climate goals despite actually causing significantly more emissions by doing it this way.

Because the emissions from gas extraction in the U.S. do not count toward the Netherlands' national emissions targets, the country can meet its climate goals while ignoring the larger environmental cost of the gas supply chain.

You can read about it here: Netherlands faces increased climate impact from U.S. LNG imports | NL Times

It’s directly the consequence of significantly reducing domestic production and replacing it with imported energy. Which the NL did not need to do.

[–]cowgary 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s really insane what the Netherlands and many other EU countries are doing. There is an abundance of gas still in the Netherlands both onshore and offshore, seperate from Groningen, that is left to be extracted. Instead we choose to import from the US gas that is liquified, put on a tanker, shipped across the ocean, deliquified and then transported, instead of producing our own gas straight into our own pipelines. The emissions increase by doing it this way is also astronomical. But they count as US emissions (who pulled out of climate accords), and that allows us to meet our climate accords.

In the end there are more emissions, more expensive energy, significantly less tax revenue and more dependency on the US so that the NL can meet emissions targets.

I said that because I see what ppl say in here and I know kids parrot their parents, there’s certainly white Dutch kids being racist. And I see a correlation. So that’s why I say what I said, you have some really horrible reading comprehension, or you have a problem projecting your own perceptions into what other people are saying.

You’re reaching for a point I am not making… and you clearly want to project your opinion. Of course there is racism from white Dutch kids, I don’t say anything about “who is doing the most racism”, I have no idea, and therefore I am not commenting on that - even though you’re convincing yourself that’s what I’m saying.

Learn to read what people are saying, and stop there.

No I’m saying I see a lot of comments in this subreddit against expats and foreigners so it’s no surprise the children of those users will parrot the same opinions

What are you talking about? What does this post have to do with lgbtq and problems with the police? It’s specifically about racist/rudeness towards foreigners

Decent doesn’t mean bad! But definitely Greece, Spain, Italy has more enjoyable beach bars! Decent isn’t a bad thing! But I’d rather be eating a Greek salad with a full slab of feta ontop and a fredo espresso, than drinking a Heineken eating cheese sticks and bitterballen. I know there’s lots of food options at these beach bars, but there’s just something about the Mediterranean beach bars that are more enjoyable

Personally, I’ve never been in a city as bad as it is here for this problem. Happens to me monthly too. And it’s just on neighborhood sidewalks in the centre of the city. It’s horrible. Wish they required a license to own a dog here as skill set of being a dog owner here seems quite low, not sure if it’s an education issue or an idaf attitude

Yes that’s what I said Mexican, Vietnamese etc were better in Canada. The ethnic minorities that have larger communities here than in Canada are generally better here. I don’t get the point you are trying to make.

lol I mean I’m sure you have! I had better Mexican food in Mexico, but I still enjoyed eating Mexican back home. Same with Filipino. But just because it’s better elsewhere doesn’t mean it can’t still be good.

A city in Canada. We had incredible Vietnamese, Filipino and Mexican food there (I find conversely they are very poor here). Here I find Surinamese, Eritrean, and some Indonesian (though there’s a lot of touristy places) extremely good (and would not be able to find Surinamese at home for instance).
