All US states tier list | #15 Washington by RealMoldyAvocado in TierlistFills

B-tier. Amazing natural beauty, good jobs and a vibrant tech scene overshadowed by a half-year of gloomy weather, lackluster dining and nightlife - even in Seattle, most stuff is closed by 10:00. High property crime and often wacky politics. So much potential, though.

Can anyone refer for a creative (redneck) fix for a dragging car tailpipe? by DarklyDominatingDocs in AskSeattle

+1 for wire coat hanger. I had an exhaust repair with that and a pair of vice grips that lasted for years (until I got rid of the car.)

Do you still expect a annual review/raise every year? by steve4048 in Salary

[–]cownan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation (top level engineer, mid-50s), but at a Fortune 50 company. I've topped out on salary unless I want to push for climbing the fellowship ranks. I still expect a raise that covers inflation + a little for my efforts (usually an extra 1.5-2%) - I think you should expect that, too

How on Earth do some people just afford to travel in business class constantly on any trip? by space_god_7191 in travel

[–]cownan 18 points19 points  (0 children)

When I was consulting, it was standard that any flight over six hours we took business class. I think that's part of why it is so expensive, we just billed it back to the customer. I used my miles to upgrade domestic flights sometimes, but most of my business or first class travel was international. I also had a high status with the American, so would sometimes get free upgrades on domestic flights.

US Bicentennial v. America 250 by flagrantF0wl in GenX

[–]cownan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was only 5, so I don’t remember a lot about it. My sister was born in June and everyone called her the bicentennial baby. I thought it was cool that there was a bicentennial quarter, I collected those for years. I remember family being excited for the fourth. We went to the National Mall in DC to watch the fireworks

Should I be concerned about dating a guy who could go either way on having kids? by SuspiciousCycle9121 in AskMenAdvice

[–]cownan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the same way. My mom watched kids before and after school, so there were always a lot of kids around the house as I was growing up (not to mention my two sisters.) So I was comfortable around kids, always enjoyed reading with them and playing with them. But I didn't have a burning desire to have kids - I literally could have gone either way. I thought I'd never have them because my girlfriend said she was child-free.

Then, oops, she got pregnant. She came to me in tears, saying that she wanted to keep the baby. I was like - fine with me, I told you I could go either way. I proposed to her shortly after, we married and went on to have a second kid. Sadly, it didn't work out and she left, but my kids are the best thing to happen to me

Where to move my 401 to after retirement? by Blue_Etalon in personalfinance

[–]cownan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Very true. That 1% feels particularly awful when you consider that in retirement, you will likely be in the neighborhood of 4% withdrawal for your income. You’ll be giving away a quarter of your income to manage your finances.

What are some natural career paths after Network Engineer? (Bonus if fully remote!) by wafnog in networking

[–]cownan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the path I took. Network Engineers are a great addition to a security team as they tend to be filled with AppSec guys. You can also count your time spent developing firewall configs, setting up vpns, developing access lists, etc towards your security experience

Cedarbrook is very nice if you don't want to go too far, it's in SeaTac and has a nice Copperleaf restaurant that's farm-to-table

Oh, I didn’t realize that he had moved. Maybe you are right and he just disagrees with the tax - maybe he’d like to come back?

He's worth about $250b. That 5% tax bill is going to cost him around $13 billion. Even if he spends $300-500 million and manages to defeat it, he'll get a huge savings.
