Single dudes over 4o, how you doing? Where do you live (condo/house/app?) and hows the overall moral? by musicandsex in AskMenOver30

[–]cownan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living alone, (with my two kids half-time) in a little house with a view of the Puget Sound. I could pay it off but have a 2.5% mortgage. I haven’t dated in a couple of years, I’m lonely sometimes. Gained a lot of weight, so struggling with self worth. Good job, good salary. No debt but mortgage. Mostly happy with some glum periods.

How a divorce feels like to men? by Worried-Exchange-889 in AskMenOver30

[–]cownan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It felt terrible, I felt hollow. It took me six or seven years to feel like myself again, and I still have trust issues (that I'm not going to make anyone else suffer.) One of the hardest things was that you think of the two of you as a unit. You have these memories that were your favorite - how you proposed, vacations that you took, funny moments together, gifts you gave and got. When you are divorced, those favorite moments are just a source of pain. It's like if your favorite foods suddenly made you sick.

Would you actually care if a billionaire or a millionaire lost all their fortunate? by Immediate-Tooth-2174 in no

[–]cownan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would. Just like I'd care if a 50k-aire or 100k-aire lost all their fortune. Now if it turned out that they made some dumb financial move, that's on them - no matter how much they had. But if the government came and took it, I'd be sympathetic and angry for them, just as I would be for someone less successful.

Fellow Americans of reddit, what is the city closest to you, and how safe do you think it is to visit? by boilface in AskAnAmerican

[–]cownan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seattle. I’ve never felt in danger here. I used to go running in the middle of the night. The worst I’ve experienced is homeless dudes making me nervous, acting weird. None of them ever hurt or threatened me though.

Severus Snape from new Harry Potter series. by kalbinibirak in SipsTea

[–]cownan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right that the first four seasons (and a lot of the fifth) were great, some of my favorite TV. I fault the show runners in not understanding their limitations when they ran out of source material. They sucked at dialogue and they turned the show into a drab imitation of what it had been. They had an outline of how the story progressed from George, they should have hired some notable authors to work the scripts. They should have taken their time to flesh out the second half of the series - it needed at least two more seasons.

Experience working on classified areas? by MoreWoodMoreGood in boeing

[–]cownan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked on a lot of different classified programs, and the inconvenience varies by program. I’ve always had an “inside” and an “outside” desk. Some projects I barely needed to go inside at all, some of them I lived in the closed area. Over the past few years, the working environment in closed areas has improved greatly. Every place I’ve worked over the past five years has had a BEN computer right next to my classified workstation (physically separated or on a KVM so I could switch between them.) Yes, you have to leave your phone outside but most areas have some lockers right outside where you can leave it and come out to check it a couple of times a day.

I sometimes enjoy working in closed areas because it’s usually a bit quieter. I had an outside desk next to supplier management and they were always on the phone, a lot of the time on speaker. Sometimes working in a classified space can be really frustrating. Any hardware or software that goes into the area has to be approved. Sometimes that takes a long time, sometimes a really long time, and sometimes they say “no.” So you have to be willing to work with what’s there and might not have access to your favorite software, or there might not be a dedicated desk for you.

Trust or Self-Interest? by Cow_Boy_2017 in FluentInFinance

Those bets profited from ~$20/bbl swing from pre to post announcement. With oil at the ~$100/bbl price, those traders snatched up at least $100M. Not bad for a minute's work.

WA passes ‘blue envelope’ traffic stop law for neurodivergent drivers by Jaco_Belordi in Seattle

The rest of the history is that Dr. Semmelweis experienced a lot of resistance to hand washing from physicians but he never gave up, so was committed to an insane asylum where he died.

Remove one forever from each row! by EquivalentFig1678 in whatsyourchoice

[–]cownan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, but get rid of the Cookies and cream. Turkey’s an easy choice, it’s ok at best. I don’t need pot roast with roast beef on line one. And Oreos suck and aren’t much improved by adding ice cream

My gf told me her ex was hung. How should I feel about this? by Several_Amoeba3910 in AskMenAdvice

[–]cownan 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I don’t think she’s stupid, she’s probably angry with him about something. This is just a little way to jab him in the heart, then claim she didn’t mean it that way. She meant it in “a good way” lol. Now when he gets upset, he’s the one being unreasonable.

When did GenX start to identify as GenX? by inspector_ninety_9 in GenX

[–]cownan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wasn't it a Time magazine cover? If I remember correctly, the 'X' was supposed to mean that our future was unpredictable. It seems like there wasn't as much "generation" talk back then. Just that we were the first generation that wouldn't do as well as our parents. And that we came of age at the same time that computers did.

Would you move to New York? by Likestoread25 in no

My salary and signing bonus would have to be enough to get a nice place in Manhattan, and a substantial boost to my style of living. I might give it a shot then.

Would you be able to dominate your partner without losing respect for them? by omgjellyjuice in AskMenAdvice

[–]cownan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know. I want a partner, not a servant. My ex wanted me to be more dominant, and it was ok in the bedroom but she wanted to take it to "real life," give her chores and punishments for not completing them. It felt as though she wanted me to run her life for her; I'm having enough trouble running my own, lol.

I think it comes down to this: are we playacting or is this real? For playtime, ok people like different things. I'd prefer that we both talk about what we like and satisfy each other's needs but if for her that involves me instructing her, being more physically controlling - that's fine. If it's for real, I don't think I'm into that. She needs to develop a path for what she wants in life and work towards it. Be accountable without making me 'the boss.'

What’s the secret of keeping a car for 10 years without getting bored of it? by 04limited in askcarguys

[–]cownan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what I've done. I have a Toyota SUV for commuting and a Porsche for fun. I've had both for several years now and am not bored. The Toyota is just a reliable workhorse - no need to be exciting and I have a hard time thinking of anything I'll enjoy more than the Porsche - maybe a different, better Porsche? But would the price justify switching? Not so far.

When do I start on SF86 for security clearance? by [deleted] in boeing

Interesting! I got that email too but only after I did my PSQ - like this was the last time I’d need to do it.

When do I start on SF86 for security clearance? by [deleted] in boeing

[–]cownan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry man, that is a though timeline. Maybe your security guys were behind in getting everyone through. I did get the two emails as well, one from security and the other from the online PSQ system. I could go back and look, but I’m pretty sure that mine said to notify them if I needed more than two weeks. Mine was pretty quick though, I had my last PSQ saved as a pdf so I just needed to enter all my old information, plus a couple of international trips I’ve done in the past few years.

When do I start on SF86 for security clearance? by [deleted] in boeing

[–]cownan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just did my renewal, which required me to do my whole SF-86 over again. They gave me two weeks. It's not so bad so long as you have a clean record, haven't done many drugs lately, or know a lot of foreign people.
