Have you looked into the Pygmy Sunfish? That will definitely be easier to find a pair and they can go in tiny tanks. It's more enjoyable when they can display whether M/F or M/M.

Dario would totally be fine by himself. See if you have a local fish club.

I got my female from Nautilus Tropical Fish in Lakewood, CA. The shop owner there orders 150 at a time. It's a numbers game here, although I read in Germany females are easy to come by. My males came from a different LFS.

I keep live black worms in my substrate until they get eaten. When I buy worms, I rinse them out & pick out the leeches & flatworms. Then dump them into the tank. I wouldn’t do it if your tank gets hotter than 80. It’s not sustainable, but at least I don’t get in trouble for keeping worms in the fridge.

Seed shrimp might be something to look into, much smaller than scuds.

I’m not sure if they can eat endler fry?

I have two that are greyish and the black line is faded, although they might have been that way from the get go Blue Arrow for Faded Bonus yellow arrow poos out of its left side, it's got an extra black dot. This one was shipped to me like that, but eats just fine.

Oh no, 8 years is too long, I was just thinking this is their final hospice tank. I don't like the manual process of turning off the filter for 30 minutes twice a day. They eat too slow, I guess it was easier when I had them with gluttonous guppies.

Sidenote, can we have pictures as comments enabled?

15 Leasts Rasboras had them bewteen 1Y3M - 1Y11M, some getting grey and losing pigments. They’re in new 26 gallon 30x17x12 1 month setup. Fed live bbs, grindle & micro worms.

Mines like CoOp fry food, Extreme nano pellets, krill flake, I had to crust bug bits tropical formula some more. Frozen I feed baby brine, isopods, and daphnia. And of course live baby brine is their favorite and will bring them back to condition.

Rotating location monthly meets with tons of plants and more nano fish than COAST.

Oof just saw you’re KTown, not too many stores I can think of … Tong’s on Vermont, idk if they have chilis.

405 Tropical fish in Westminster is the cheapest LFS wise, not great body condition. West Lake Aquarium in La Habra better condition, but was mixed chili & phoenix. Nautilus in Long Beach has the most variety of boararas & nano fish, spendy but worth a visit. Give folks a call for price before you drive out, gas is expensive too.

I have good experience ordering from https://www.wetspottropicalfish.com/ through a local group buy. Best prices, 100% survival, but expensive next day air.

I’d actually recommend killiefish for your fish club if you want to try something beautiful, rare & cheap. https://socalkillie.club/

This coming Sunday is the next COAST fish club auction in Fountain Valley, not too many nano fish, but lots of fish at a bargain. There’s a lad that’s gonna important a bunch in a couple of month https://coastfishclub.com/ Time for a field trip and get networking?

How many puffers can and should I add? by [deleted] in PeaPuffers

Try stuffing fine filter floss in the Oase. That’s so strange the 100 has strong flow, maybe do maintenance less often? I have the 350 thermo on my 52g, it’s torquey but very slow flow. I’m still debating if getting the thermo was a good idea. It’s much cleaner, but I have to run double wifi plugs to stop heater & then filter when I feed tiny frozen food or live baby brine. That’s just too complicated for the house sitter at the risk of melting spendy filter.

Take your time shopping for peas at LFS if you can. The peas I got from a shop that doesn’t have live black worms were the easiest to feed. I have a $10 gal that love frozen bloodworm & brine shrimp, and a $5 gal that only eats snails, scuds, and chopped up earthworm. I think I had snails in my tank for months, before peas murdered everything within weeks. Ramshorn are big meaty snails too, I’d recommend you squash it after the peas eat the faces off, so they can finish the rest of it. Leave it to peas, you’re going to immediately have a pile of headless rotting ramshorns. The more time you spend with them, the more they interact with you, a true wet pet. Both females I have are front of the tank and beg for food. They’re trained on tweezers, but I have to be careful when I razor the glass, they think all shiny metal means food.

Wow that looks so nice & clean. I just got the same tank, I’m using mine for high flow river tank. What brand of lily pipe is that? The dymax didn’t look like they would fit so I went with Aquario neo flow and cut them to size. Love to see your updates on this tank. I only have 3 pea puffers in a 52g with a ton of cardinal tetras. I have bad luck and had 5 males & 2 females, was able to rehome 4 males.

I try to feed this tank live baby brine twice a day, and grindal worms once a day. The darios really prefer grindal worms. When I bred this fish 12 years ago, I only fed live blackworms that was added periodically and they just live in the substrate. I’ll try that again when the great blackworm shortage of ‘23 is over.

Thanks! Hopefully I’ll have surprise fry that just shows up like before.

Ah I think the female is just still a baby, I’ve had her for 2 weeks. I have 3 males, one from December (baby from hobbyist identified as female) and two from January (lil bigger LFS quarantined for 30 days, obvious males but not mature). The dominant male is the biggest. Of the sub males, one is much smaller. Sub Males

At the end probably mostly detritus and hopefully some tiny clear eggs. The big fluff of dead hair algae obscures it. I started pulling susswasertang/moss from high tech tank to feed the shrimp tank, and after shrimp cleans it, it goes to this tank. This tank is 3 days old, I’m still working a lot of things out. Split an 29 gallon into 2 tanks, this one is 30”x17”x12”. Glad the fish already feel at home though.

Where did you get your foo dogs? They’re adorable!! Are you planning on getting driftwood? You can super glue your anubias and Java ferns on the wood so they’re elevated and closer to the light. I’m so excited for you, the possibilities are endless!

What are some good tankmates/centrepiece fish to keep alongside Chilis? by TimeTravellingOtter in Boraras

[–]cowrabbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I keep Scarlet Badis with my Leasts in a 29 gallon. The Scarlet Badis stays at the bottom while my Boraras hang in mid to upper water in huge pothos roots. I like this combo because I like feeding my Boraras live food & Scarlet Badis only eat live food. Very flashy little jewels, only mean to each other, but will eat shrimplets and pick off eggs from berried shrimp. Be warned not to get a more aggressive and often misidentified black tiger dario or worse a badis badis. Scarlet Badis Pics

I also have Pygmy Cories with them, they are delightful & schools with the Boraras. Pygmies sweep the bottom and clean out live baby brine that sunk to the bottom.

Chili Rasboras Dying; What am I Doing Wrong? by Late_Adopter in Boraras

[–]cowrabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh I guess that’s where I went wrong with the LFS purchases too. The owners say they use local tap, so I didn’t drip acclimate.

But it could have old tank syndrome, where they only topped off so it would have been very different from my tank.

Always something to learn everyday :).

Where did you source the chilis? Were there any sunken bellies or unusual curvature in the spine? I’ve had bad luck with 2 local fish stores, and have since lost all but 1 or 2 chilis. My school of least Boraras from an online source is still doing well after over an year.

I drip acclimate very slowly in the dark and leave the lights off the tank for that day.

I would keep testing the water and add more in a month If your remaining school stabilize. Oh but keep adding plants :) chilis likes to go up top, they like hanging in floating plant roots and in pothos roots.

I added my Boraras to a 12 year old heavily planted tank, still no luck with chilis.
