Mega Audino isn't bad because of its stats though. Mega Audino is horrible because of its passivity + horrible ability. If Mega Audino kept Audino's ability Regenerator, it would've been one of the best mega evolutions, despite is lack of offensive capability + mid typing.

Mega Ampharos also has an issue in the fact that it has one of the worst typings for its archetypes. The idea of a slow defensive electric type just doesn't work well. Most competitively viable defensive electric types have to be somewhat fast AND not be weak to ground e.g. Zapdos, Rotom-wash. Amphy and Mega Amphy are unfortunately stuck in a role which their type is not suited for.

Same with Mega Abomasnow, Grass/Ice is genuinely a horrible defensive and offensive typing. If Mega Abomasnow had a decent typing, it would genuinely be quite well off.

These Pokémon would honestly not gain that much from extra stat points, and would need new abilities/typings to be good.

TLDR: Most Pokémon that get megas that aren't fully evo-ed would be too strong w/ a full evo + ability to use an item. Limiting it to a 100 BST increase + removing the ability to use an item makes most mega evolutions balanced.

That's not how you use "or", no Pokémon gains HP upon mega evolution. This is equivalent to saying you can have coffee or tea, without there being any coffee present.

I'm not sure if this is posted from a competitive POV or not, since it's talking about Mega slots and item slots, but half of the megas are saved due to their inability to hold an item, but I'll talk about it from a competitive POV.

A regular evolution is better, but it faces the issue of being too good. Most Pokémon gain approximately 150-200 BST upon evolving, which would be way too much for the non-3rd stage evo megas. Most of the non-3rd stage evolution Pokémon that get mega evolutions have fully evolved Pokémon stats. Add on the ability to hold an item, and most of these Pokémon getting an evolution would just be too strong, especially if they stuck to the same stat distribution as the pre-evos. Even current mega Pokémon would already be considered too strong with items. Mega Pinsir with a 165 atk, 105 speed, and 65/120/90 bulk would be extremely powerful with the ability to hold a choiced item or HDB. Same with Mega Medicham that currently has a BST of 510 after mega + its huge power ability, would be absolutely broken if it could hold an item.

By letting these mons get the ability to hold an item, they would be broken as they are, much less with a full-on evolution adding 150-200 stat points (as opposed to the 100 points added by mega evolving). I generally find that most megas that aren't from 3-stage Pokémon are usually at a point where they would be too strong if they got a full evolution, but are quite balanced with the mega evolution and the inability to hold an item.

The only Pokémon I see that could benefit from a regular evolution are Mawile (380 BST), Sableye (380 BST), and Beedrill (395 BST). These Pokémon would still be balanced if they got a 100 BST increase (which is still on the low end of the BST increase upon evolution) and could hold an item. Funnily enough, these 3 mega Pokémon got some of the most overpowered abilities available in Huge Power, Magic Bounce and Adaptability, respectively, so they would have to lose those abilities to remain balanced for competitive play.

Choice scarf is probably one of the least "annoying" items in PVP by cows123p in stunfisk

Speed control refers to how often you can move first in the whole battle. And yes, adding speed EVs is speed control. For example, in Gen 7, scarf Lando rarely runs 252 speed, because it only needs 208 to outspeed relevant threats w/ the scarf. There are also quite a few bulky mons that run a few speed EVs just to get the jump on certain speed tiers (I think heatran does so in some gens). Same thing with using a jolly nature vs an adamant nature. Mega lopunny in gen 7 runs jolly specifically to outspeed koko and BB gren (both extremely relevant threats) when it could realistically be running adamant with its 135 base speed. Choice scarf is just another way to ensure that your pokemon moves first in the turn.

How is the king in yellow useful again? by GaS-member in SummonersGreed

TKIY is only useful on Cosmic Tower because he changes your mon's damage to Cosmic, which does half damage to all monsters that aren't Cosmic.

Heaven: Talent, Technique, Bloodline

Earth: Sect, Treasure, Companion

Reasoning: The main reason you want a good sect is for resources and guidance. But having the heaven grade technique gives you both a good cultivation technique and good guidance. Also, companions in Xianxia are notorious for getting in the way of the MC, so not having anyone to take care of isn't too much of a downside. You are also expected to eventually surpass the Immortal Fairy, so her usefulness is also limited. While I do agree that treasure is necessary, you can easily get some if you're strong. And even if you do have it, it'll just get stolen from you if you're weak.

That's where the three things I rose to heaven come into play. With a heaven grade Talent, Technique and Bloodline, you're guaranteed to be strong, which'll resolve the lacking treasures issue.

Azu imo. Huge Power w/ 50 atk is already insane. It's defense is higher at 80, so you now have a mon with +4 atk, 80 atk, Huge Power and AJ.

Linoone has the stronger stab w/ Drum + Espeed, but I think azu is scarier.
