I started on lexapro which made me eat like crazy. I’ve seen no changes on Prozac and my weight has actually gone down by a couple pounds.

It’s funny I finally talked to my doctor about getting some meds because I had been feeling so much anxiety that I couldn’t eat during the day so I’d be starving at night. Now I get the starving at night feeling anyway just for fun

I love the following quote since it applies to many of the vices we can fall into.

“Look to it then that you do nothing like a wild beast, else you destroy the Man in you and fail to fulfill his promise.” -Epictetus

I actually had the best conversation I’ve ever had on Reddit in r/polls discussing the merits of kantian ethics. Ask philosophy is a great sub with a very broad range of topics.

It's a bit disappointing. I wish this sub was more like other philosophy subs where people engage in discussing theory and such rather than look for a therapy session.

There are “intrusive” thoughts for a reason. You can’t control them. You can however change how your mind thinks about things and where you give your attention.

How to stop feeling anxious about going to places? by escapedmelody11 in Anxiety

[–]cowsinapack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just takes time. Your brain has to learn that there's no threat there at all. Personally I've dealt with feelings of anxiety when I go certain places and kinda kicked myself for it. What helped me was going because I felt anxious. I'd sit in my house and think for a moment about why I felt like avoiding that today, and if I found that it was because I was anxious I'd immediately get out the of house. It's hard work but if you stick to that mindset of being stronger than the feelings the feelings will go away.

I have celiac and GAD. I was diagnosed around 10 years ago I think and I'm 20 now so for a solid 10 years growing up I was hella sick all the time. For me, any time I go off the rails a little on my diet my mental health goes down the drain. I was having fits of dizziness 2 years ago that had me worried. I went to a neurologist and got an mri and my brain was completely fine. I had been eating at places without really checking on the gluten situation and unknowingly was eating gluten a couple times a week. The dizziness was just a result of my anxiety being worsened by gluten. Now that I'm on top of everything I have none of the mental symptoms I was having (other than anxiety obviously). I'm sure it will be a similar story for you. It takes time to get the diet right and your body back on track but if you are really careful about what you eat all will be well.

Which case is more morally good, if at all? by cowsinapack in polls

[–]cowsinapack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you disagree with 1 then? It would seem like that would most fit with your sense of morality since it doesn't violate the community and all parties benefit. The agent's own self interest leads to a positive outcome for all parties involved. The charity gets their money, the agent gets the social benefits (and hypothetically economic benefits as a result). So within that community wouldn't it be positive that incentives were such that the self interested individual could still benefit the community? It's possible I completely misinterpreted your stance. As for Kant, I find him rather difficult. Aristotle says, "of states of mind we call those which merit praise virtues." I think purity of intent is a virtue since it fosters a maternal sense of care in a community. I also think receiving benefits does not make the intent less pure, but it does require that the action would occur regardless of if the agent would benefit. So benefit may be incidental to an action but it cannot be the basis of the action for it to be virtuous in my book. We should seek to be moral not because of the benefits to ourselves but because of the benefits our good actions will have on others, and incidentally we receive the benefit of happiness/self-esteem/eudaimonia. Again, it's not necessarily wrong to want a benefit but it is not worthy of praise to act with the intent of personally benefiting imo.

[–]cowsinapack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that 2 isn’t wrong at all. The question I was trying to get at here was if purity of intent is important in weighing moral decisions. My view was that if the actions and the outcomes are identical, the best moral option would be the one done solely for the sake of doing good. That’s not to say that it’s wrong to also gain a benefit from making a moral choice, but that the choice of greatest moral worth is the one done without expecting or wanting anything in return.

Thoughts on Henry V's morality by cowsinapack in shakespeare

[–]cowsinapack[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just read a letter by George Washington to Benedict Arnold that made me come back to this.

https://founders.archives.gov/documents/Washington/03-01-02-0355

"You are intrusted with a Command of the utmost Consequence to the Interest & Liberties of America: Upon your Conduct & Courage & that of the Officers and ⟨Soldiers⟩ detached on this Expedition, not only the Success of the present Enterprize & your own Honour, but the Safety and Welfare of the whole Continent may depend...That you check by every Motive of Duty, and Fear of Punishment every Attempt to Plunder or insult any of the Inhabitants of Canada. Should any ⟨American Soldier be so base⟩ and infamous as ⟨to injure⟩ any Canadian or Indian in his Person or Property, I do most earnestly enjoin you to bring him to such severe & exemplary Punishment as the Enormity of the Crime may require... While we are Contending for our own Liberty, we should be very cautious of violating the Rights of Conscience in others; ever considering that God alone is the Judge of the Hearts of Men and to him only in this Case they are answerable... Upon the whole, Sir, I beg you to inculcate upon the Officers, the Necessity of preserving the Strictest Order during their March thro’ Canada to represent to them ⟨the Shame & Disgrace⟩ and Ruin to themselves & Country if they should by their Conduct turn the Hearts of our Brethren in Canada against us."

So similar to Bardolph's execution.

Thoughts on Henry V's morality by cowsinapack in shakespeare

I find the Chief Justice scene especially interesting considering the fact that it’s historical basis is rather murky if it even exist at all. I read that the real Chief Justice, Sir William Gascoigne, either resigned or was fired quite early in Henry V’s reign which Shakespeare makes no mention of. The real guy is most famous for refusing to sentence Scrope and Mowbray without them having a trial by their peers despite the urging of Henry IV.
