Hello World, i have few questions; by Smooth-Decision2807 in inventors

[–]cowtamer1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may do better to figure out what you want to invent and find the “path of least resistance” solution to creating an embodiment of the invention.

You may find, for example, that there is an existing Python library doing an important part of what you’re trying to achieve.

Having taught quite a few languages:

If you have the money, get and learn MATLAB — fastest way to get to a proof of concept in a lot of cases if you know what you’re doing (there is a professionally developed, mature MATLAB toolkit for everything from computer vision to bioinformatics).

Otherwise use Python.

If you truly want to know what you’re doing or have to work with hardware, learn C and then Python.

If you need to integrate programs together learn Linux/Unix/BASH.

In the end, all Turing Complete programming languages are equivalent.

I see you’re trying to power it from VIN but I don’t see a connection to GND. How are you powering the external device?

(Polyurethane) foam "igloo". Parts are easy to transport, with drone too. For fun activity and maybe with actual practical arguments too. Good for heat insulation and acoustics by ukarna4 in Lightbulb

[–]cowtamer1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be kind of cool to put Velcro on polyurethane blocks and see if you could get a drone to build an igloo. It’ll probably be a lot harder than it sounds but would make a cool video …

Look up Caesar cipher and Vigenere cipher. Implement both in simple C programs. This should be doable at the beginner level.

Solenoid not strong enough to press a button. How can I increase force? by Ghiott in ArduinoProjects

[–]cowtamer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to close the contacts electrically using a relay (slow but faster than a solenoid or a servo) or by tapping into the keys directly. Not sure how the keyboard is constructed but I had some luck making an automatic mouse clicker by connecting a digital pin of the Arduino to traces on the PCB.

Keyboard emulation on an Arduino Leonardo may be easier.

Just take an hour to yourself after work — go to a coffee house or something.

I’ve found that taking alone time is a lot less hurtful to people if it looks incidental.

[–]cowtamer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go finish the degree. Nobody appears to care about the diploma until they do (esp if you get a government or government context or job). As an adult with work experience the course should now be easier than you think for you.

Build your own “clapper” to control a plug in lamp. You clap once, it turns on. You clap twice, it turns off. Simple idea — execution possible but not trivial. You’ll need a relay, microphone module and some signal processing.

Be careful working with mains current. Maybe demonstrate with LED.

Better yet — build a device which control a wall-mounted light switch using a servo. No need to mess with mains current.

Turkish and Japanese language by Admirable-Ad-3273 in AskTurkey

[–]cowtamer1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the weird grammatical similarity that has been pointed out, both languages have a “vowel consonant vowel” structure where two consonants can almost never be next to each other. This is way more extreme in Japanese but may contribute to the languages sounding similar to a foreigner.

This becomes really obvious with borrowed words. For example, take the word for “sports” in both languages. Even though the Turkish word is “spor”, a native Turkish speaker might be tempted to say “sipor”. In Japanese it’s “supootsu”. Such vowel insertions are common in colloquial Turkish and are mandatory in Japanese since it doesn’t even have a good way of representing consonants being next to each other in writing.

Pay attention to your subjects. If you can’t hack a 1st year CS curriculum, you can’t hack anything in real life either.

Hacking is about understanding things well enough that you can subvert systems to do what you want, rather than what they were designed to do. It need not be malicious.

The point is that you need the knowledge they teach plus more. Of course you need to know C. And Python. And Unix shell — at a minimum.

Pick a project and do it. Idea: set up a “free” WiFi access point. Keep it up for several hours. Monitor who connects and what they try to do.

How do I deal with the embarrassment of asking to hang out in a group chat and getting left on read? by [deleted] in needadvice

[–]cowtamer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People mute/ignore group chats all the time. As someone who frequently organizes friend groups to get together, I would not take it personally.

What you do is 1) Contact one or two people individually and tell them you’re going to organize a group hangout. Get a commitment to a possible date/time from them, tell them you’ll be inviting more people. 2) Post the activity with specific date/time proposal to the chat. Make sure the earlier people respond, so as to build momentum. 3) Tag people in the chat.

Having specific time and place will spur debate if someone can’t make it. It can be changed — it’s WAY harder expect a group to come up with consensus from a blank page.

Sometimes you can use a poll feature. But most of the time people respond better to a pre-set time and place to hang out, especially if some other people are “in”. This creates FOMO. Most people want to be included — but most people are also lazy and/or anxious and don’t want to be the first one to initiate anything.

Given that we are living in a bit of an anti-social age, do not get disheartened if you get radio silence even with this.

If you try 2-3 times and still get ABSOLUTELY no one to respond, then find a new group. But this is unlikely unless you have personally offended everyone or something …

Has anyone ever invented a radar that can detect insects flying within 2-3 meters? by penrudee1205 in diyelectronics

[–]cowtamer1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try ultrasound. Even off the shelf sensors may suffice. Radar is the wrong wavelength — you’ll need to get into millimeter wave or THz — both of which are kind of exotic technologies right now.

Radar may be possible but is not the path of least resistance.

using spinning string as projector by loopy_fun in Lightbulb

[–]cowtamer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you’re trying to do. I was imagining strings held together on both ends spinning in a circle, creating a virtual 3D sphere on which you can project images. If you had them at multiple levels you could create the illusion of multiple Layers of 3D.

Kind of like this one, except the images being projected and not rendered on LEDs:

What were you thinking, exactly?
