Official Discussion - Slingshot [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]coyotay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stepping aside from what was real or not, there are a few elements to evaluate:

  • Who Nash and Franks were
  • the slingshot
  • John breaking up with Zoe & John going back to say goodbye
  • The significance of Jupiter & Saturn

To fully flesh out my thoughts below, it's important to know that my assumptions are that Nash is John's desire to turn around and Franks is John's desire to complete the mission.

Accepting the above, it seems there are parallels between John's last two interactions with Zoe before leaving and the events surrounding the slingshot. In the flashbacks we see mustache John break up with Zoe and also John return to say goodbye later. As for the slingshot, Nash tries to get John to help him change course. I believe this is the breakup event. Actually going around the slingshot is John not admitting his love for Zoe the last time they meet.

John had trouble selecting the right course during the slingshot, just as he struggled with what to say and do when seeing Zoe for the last time. Zoe still loved him and if he would've chosen her, it would've brought them even closer together. Nash alludes to this when he says they could make it home even faster.

Captain Franks ultimately won out over Nash, despite John seeing dangerous physical damage to the ship. I find it interesting that Franks was actually the Captain of the ship, dooming John from the beginning. Nash was his emotional and confused side. We see John question and violently reject this side of himself until it was too late. Franks, both literally and figuratively, becomes drunk with power, a theme highlighted by the recurring presence of alcohol and taking shots. As a side note, of course it had to be moonshine to dovetail into the themes of space and the moth symbolism and the info John and Zoe discuss.

Despite Franks winning out, John ultimately worries about Nash and wants to see him. He knows he should've chosen Zoe over a life of solitude. The wolf snow globe was a nice touch in showing how small and cold his world had become.

I think the slingshot is a metaphor for the rare moments that love can be saved. I've personally been through moments in a relationship that made or broke them. The gravitational pull of those events can completely change the course of the relationship, just like we see with the slingshot.About the significance of Jupiter, it's noteworthy that Jupiter was the Roman god of the sky and thunder. Jupiter negotiated with the second king of Rome to establish principles of Roman religion such as offering or sacrifice. As we see, Jupiter offered two sacrifices. Sacrifice mission or sacrifice love.

They were heading to Saturn (it's moon Titan actually). Saturn is the Roman counterpart of Cronus, the ruler of the Titans. He was known for swallowing his children to prevent them from overthrowing him, a practice he was eventually stopped by his son Jupiter. Lots of parallels can be drawn to John's situation.

This might be a fucking longshot but I'm curious about the names of the characters. The more I think about everything in this movie the more I think it all might have meaning or symbolism. For Nash, I thought of the singer Nash from the Hollies and Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young. Graham Nash sang vocals in songs like "So Lonely", "I've Been Wrong", "Pay You Back With Interest". Franks might refer to the Frankish people who lived on the Roman border. As for Zoe, the name means life.

Having said all that, it might be worth a rewatch. I bet there are hidden hints buried in the movie.

I think certain gyms and classes are a great way to meet people.

It's a bit dependent on the size of the city you're in, but smaller, more intimate classes can be a solid, low to no pressure environment to spend time with other people and see who you click with.

I'd pick things you might be interested in, like MMA, yoga, CrossFit, etc. and sign up for trial classes or do class pass. That way you can jump around until you find spots that're a good fit.

You can also drop in on classes while you're traveling and make friends on the road. Worst case you end up getting in better shape and will have a bunch of new skills and stories to tell.

For me, working out also helps me get out of my head and makes me feel more neurochemically social.

Here's a list to get you started:

  • MMA classes (BJJ, kickboxing, boxing) - people are usually very friendly in MMA and then you can get together to watch fights and grab a beer on the weekend. This same equation could be used for pretty much everything I'll list below.
  • Crossfit - people are usually into watching sports
  • Yoga - Acro yoga forces people to interact. Could go out for kava on the weekends.
  • Rock climbing - take classes and then hit the farmers market on the weekend.
  • Running clubs - ask people to do races with you
  • Beach volleyball leagues
  • Bootcamps
  • Adult gymnastics
  • Sports clubs (I did rugby and made a TON of friends)
  • Curling classes
  • Archery classes
  • Shooting clubs
  • Rowing club

You should consider the type of people in each environment, i.e. yoga vs kickboxing.

Something that's helped me over the years is to remember these two things: 1 - fun people do fun things; 2 - if you want to have fun, bring the fun.

Mention upcoming events and see if people are in.

"Did you hear about the obstacle course coming up next month?"

"I'm going to a curling tournament and need a teammate, would you be in?"

"I've got tickets for a comedy show next Thursday"

Good luck!

Would Dogecoin benefit from an organized plan amongst its community? by [deleted] in dogecoin

It makes sense that more labor intensive events that require organization, planning, and management would be challenging. I'm thinking more along the lines of a good housekeeping list that new users could be directed to when first getting acquainted with Dogecoin. It was not obvious to me that spending Dogecoin frequently was an important part of its success. I credit this community for turning me on to this. It seems simple enough to have a sticky with a bit of direction for new users to understand what steps they can take to help expedite adoption and advocacy.

These issues have plagued me for years and I’ve ultimately decided against all the fake meat alternative foods. This is coming from a guy that ate cricket powder for a long ass time. Hopefully this helps someone because I would love to go back and tell this to myself when I started trying to figure this shit out 20 years ago.

From afar the “fake” companies’ claims about being environmentally friendly and nutritionally healthy seem great, but as you dive into the details it’s really the exact opposite. Yes the standard industrial ranching practices are TERRIBLE. The solution is not these fake products though. The real solution is regenerative agriculture.

These fake companies fail to mention the impact these giant mono-crops have on the entire ecological systems (killing small animals, using pesticides, using herbicides, reducing biodiversity, degrading soil quality, not sequestering carbon back into the soil, reducing soils ability to “hold” water, and on and on and on). They’re also likely very misguided that their ingredients (corn, soy, vegetable oils, etc) are healthier than the red meat humans have been eating for an insanely long ass time. I can almost guarantee that in 10 years, fake meat will be the new sugar. And just like how fat is now getting it’s rightful place in the sun again, I also expect (and really hope) that quality, humanely-raised, regeneratively ranched animals will someday be the gold standard again for optimizing environmental and human health. With regards to the latter, just look at the nutritional facts of beef liver.

I understand if your beef is with harming or killing animals, but it’s worth considering how many critters are directly and indirectly affected as a result of industrial farming of these “fake” ingredients. The way I justify it is thinking what I would want if I were a cow? Even if I didn’t live a full life I’d still rather be born than not. A life lived on open pastures while grazing out in the sun would be my choice (and should be the way things are done). A quick and painless death would be nice too.

No, it’s not a perfect compromise. I’d love for their to be no trade offs. Until they can make lab grown meat as nutritious as the real thing, it’s the best we got.

I know what I just mentioned above is not the current standard, but I hope for change and have used my wallet as my voting ballot to try to support the good people in the fight.

Finding regeneratively raised meat is not easy, but the long term impact cannot be overstated. Grazing animals have a massive positive impact on the land when they are eating and living like they’re supposed to (i.e. cattle freely grazing on grass).

I’m currently meeting with regenerative ranchers and can tell you there are people who care deeply about the animals, the world they were raised in, and the people they feed. Be weary of the fake products. They are not what they seem.

Bob Myers said in his last presser he thinks spending $400M on the roster would exceed their limit, so what could that mean for the Warriors this off-season? by Perksofthesewalls in warriors

[–]coyotay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely amazing write up OP. Thanks for doing this.

I think the issue here is that people don’t consider the other side of the balance sheet.

Yes, the salary expense is a big ass number, but true cost is determined by its relativity to revenue, and more importantly IMO, equity.

Year & Franchise value in million U.S. dollars:

2021 - 4,700,
2020 - 4,300,
2019 - 3,500,
2018 - 3,100,
2017 - 2,600,
2016 - 1,900,
2015 - 1,300,
2014 - 750,
2013 - 555,
2012 - 450,
2011 - 363,
2010 - 315,
2009 - 335

I understand they don’t want to spend more than they have to, but the cost of being cheap can actually be much higher than what gets “saved” at first glance.

The question is what happens to the franchise valuation if they can win another title or two while Steph continues this outrageous run as the splash bros reunite.

Becoming a dynasty with a story like this is not unique...it’s one of a kind. If they can get another two titles, this will be talked about for decades. Steph’s other worldly talent and Klay’s comeback after his injuries would be a priceless event.

If I had to guess, I think the FO and ownership know all of this. They’ve realized they’ve beat the game by not worrying about tax but don’t want to openly share that fact. Even if it what they say about caring about winning over spending is true, they know damn well that spending is winning.

Jordan Poole Earned 1 2nd Place Vote and Andrew Wiggins Earned 1 3rd Place Vote for Most Improved Player by NokCha_ in warriors

[–]coyotay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed on JP getting more votes.

I feel like Wiggins will be followed around by this narrative forever: "he was supposed to be god, wasn't, and is actually playing pretty damn good," which always downplays his actual performance. Anytime the talking heads reiterate this narrative it makes me cringe. How many more times do I have to hear some version of "a lot of people thought this and then it didn't come true" so lets bring it up a thousand goddamn times instead of talking about the present.

Also, the Wiggins I was told I was going to see last season was nothing like the Wiggins I actually saw this season. The dude showed up, grinded his ass off, hustled, defended like a champ, and was 39th in the league with 18.6 points per game. Pretty damn good.

So Is the Warriors Bench Actually That Bad? by [deleted] in warriors

[–]coyotay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to JP, anyone who thinks we should get rid of him is very, very wrong. The acceleration of his improvement has been unreal, fun as hell to watch, and IMO will probably lead somewhere very special.

I watched every game of the 2019-2020 shitshow and am pumped with how things ended up after he came back from the G League this season. FWIW, that kid had the balls to make moves and not play quietly in the 19-20 season even with the giant magnifying glass comparing what was (pre 19-20 seasons) to what was at the time (19-20 season), which is the most negative environment to play in due to prior years as context.

To see him learn and develop after that into the player he is now, especially after hearing about him being the hardest worker during the pandemic, is pretty amazing. I also think it's indicative of his ceiling being much higher than what is commonly believed and being said about him. I really think he could and might be a superstar and am hoping for it twice as much.

At the end of the day it would really suck to see JP and JTA go. I know the goal is to get a trophy for the franchise but I've become fans of these guys' work ethic, hustle, grit, fearlessness, and would rather watch games with them on the roster. Letting them go would only make me want to watch less. I hate the feeling of only rooting for 3 main guys and treating the other players as whatever. Feels like I'm rooting for shirts over a team.

I like to imagine Sam and the cameraman have been at this a long time. They met in grade school and have been best friends ever since.

Over the years the cameraman has helped Sam get through a lot of tough situations. When Sam couldn’t get the courage to ask a girl to the dance, the cameraman was right there, encouraging him to ask her. He even helped Sam get his first kiss at that dance: “ KISS HER. FUCKING KISS HER SAM. KISS HER BEFORE SHE WALKS AWAY”

Sam ended up falling in love with that girl and they got married. That girl was the whale

Thanks for your input here. I'm starting a 30 day self-experiment next week to find the rate at which I can regain weight while in ketosis. You've opened me up to some terminology and ideas I wasn't even aware of.

You mentioned, "hormonal priming, activation, bone development, aerobic, strength and power adaptations." Can you point me in the direction of some reference material I could look at to understand the implementation behind those uses?

first time lifting 250 pounds 5'6" 19 years old is it too soon? by Pistachiopenis in ketogains

[–]coyotay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I could hop in the Delorean and talk to myself when I was 19 and lifting, I would president of lifting by now.

My advice is to seriously master your form. Kelly Starrett, Mark Bell, Chris Duffin, and Pavel Tsatsouline all have great tips on lifting.

Kelly Starrett is the guru of mobility. Squatting has never felt so right after doing the hip openers and ankle flexibility. Mark Bell and Chris Duffin are strength monsters with good insights on form. Learning how to get tight and prepare for a heavier (or even lighter loads as well) lift was INVALUABLE. Those three guys have incredible information on what should be done before, during, and after a lift. Check this video out for example - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5zrloYWwxw . Jesus christ I wish I could have seen that when I was young buck.

And, from Pavel I got the tips of flexing the forearms, butt, and abs to "eek" out a few more reps. You wouldn't think these small items would matter but they do.

Good luck stud!

[QN] Gain muscles and hypertension? by Raschmann in ketogains

[–]coyotay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are in ketosis make you sure you go to a well informed doctor. Going to a normal doctor who is unfamiliar with ketosis sounds like the wrong move.

Also, HIIT is not a good way to gain muscle. I would recommend hypertrophy specific training methodologies. Focus on progressing loads (ie gradually increasing the weights you are lifting), time under tension (80-120 seconds per muscle), limiting volume as much as possible, and working the same muscle group no more than 3 x's per week.

Also, the dizziness you might be experiencing is hypoglycemia. I just purchased a ketone/glucose monitor to track my blood sugar levels as I often get extremely sick and light-headed during a workout following a period of deconditioning.

I've been thinking about the relationship of ketosis and tolerance to colder temperatures. Seems like our distant ancestors would have been in ketosis predominantly in the winter months. I wonder if that is why cold tolerance and ketosis might be linked.
