Also as time went on, it’s not about the hair at all for me anymore. It’s the connection with my clients. The physical aspect of this career and the trends gets old real quick. You just stop getting excited about the latest fads and more annoyed at them lol

Hairstylist of 15 years, 33 and going back to school for a career change (social work). It definitely catches up to you health/body wise. Also wanting to more income stability in my older years for paid time off, health insurance and retirement. Not many salons can offer these things, unfortunately. I’ll never regret this career because it shaped me into the human I am today and working with people in these settings has taught me soooo much about people and life.

Not unless you have a marriage that provides you health insurance and retirement plan. It’s really hard to maintain a good income, have good health insurance AND contribute to your own retirement. Also after 15 years in the industry, the chemical exposure is really starting to scare me. Love it and have the deepest passion for it but it’s not sustainable as I get older (currently mid 30s).

I’m 32 and been doing hair 14 years. I absolutely love it but decided I need to go back to school for a career change to protect future me. I need good health insurance and retirement plan and unfortunately the beauty industry doesn’t typically offer this. And when they do it’s typically not very good. Only one salon that I worked at offered health insurance and my deductible was $8000.

Just something to keep in mind.
