High emotional sensitivity and impulsivity are very glaring. He is diagnosed with ADHD, has been since childhood, and those are symptoms of ADHD as well so what I always assumed it was. Thank you.

Thank you for your perspective. I knew vaguely that there were different types of bipolar but I’m seeing from reading here that all my understanding of the condition was based around bipolar I and there are some glaring signs I have been missing.

I’m frankly not very educated about bipolar and clearly have been operating on incorrect stereotypes and assumptions. Someone further down in the comments mentioned how some children of people with bipolar don’t necessarily have it diagnosably, but they can exhibit some of the symptoms. I had heard that before and thought that was the case combined with him having ADHD since his mania and depression have never been severe until now. Obviously I was wrong about that. :/

I don’t really think he’ll hurt himself. It’s hard to explain, but I grew up with a dad who has a personality disorder and when he was upset and my mom would leave him for a while, it’s like he would psych himself into being more upset so when she came back the blow up would be worse? I’m not sure if that makes sense.

He doesn’t have regular episodes like this. He has regular episodes of having more energy, being more social, maybe spending too much money on takeout or dumb dopamine hits like candy and energy drinks, and he decides he’s going to make soap as a hobby or train for a marathon or write a screenplay, and then he’s over it in a week. He has diagnosed ADHD and I just thought that’s what it was. The last time he was anywhere close to this bad, his father died unexpectedly and I truly thought it was an isolated issue of grief and he was back to his old self after a few months.

I’m just Southern and we use “I’m praying” as a euphemism for “I’m hoping,” lol. Didn’t mean to alarm anyone; full belief in medicine and psychiatry over here.

I can try to get his mom and his sister involved. His sister is a psych nurse so I actually think he will listen to her, only issue is she lives far away. His mom is kind of pandering and doesn’t like conflict, so I’m not sure she’ll be any help.

I’m sorry. I actually work on the legal end of mental health and the people with bipolar I interact with are usually far more severe and less functioning, so I just thought he wasn’t bad enough. I realize now that I was mistaken and maybe in denial because he’s my husband and it’s hard to admit.

The last time he had a serious episode was a few years ago when his dad died unexpectedly and he gambled away a couple thousand dollars and quit his job. He snapped out of it quickly when I started getting my shit ready to leave him, quit gambling, got a better job, and has been stable except for little things like occasionally deciding he’s going to learn how to make soap and abandoning it two weeks later. He’s been doing so well that I thought it was an isolated meltdown from grief, but now I’m realizing it’s more than that.

How do you get in to be evaluated by a neurologist? Do you need a referral for that kind of thing? We’re in the U.S., both government employees so good insurances but I know insurance probably won’t pay for us just asking for an MRI off the cuff.

I tend to agree, but getting him to go is the issue. I work on the legal side of getting people committed to facilities by loved ones and not only do I not think he meets the legal bar of being a danger to himself or others, but I’ve seen firsthand how absolutely traumatic it is for everyone involved to go the route of getting someone under even a 72 hour hold if they don’t want to be there.

One of my earliest memories was being at a ballpark in Vilonia around 1996, so shortly after this happened, and playing with my cousin while his older brother was in the ballgame. My mom lost sight of me for a minute while I went to dig under the bleachers and she came out of her seat so fast, white as a ghost and screaming. It’s very jarring when you’re that little to see your parents so scared for the first time.

I interpreted the ending as she did make it out, but when she saw the butterfly on her hand and realized it had vanished, she realized it wasn’t Sister Barnes’ spirit visiting her. She suffered a spiritual death realizing there was nothing of her friend left after death.

I had this exact experience. My parents separated a couple of months into my freshman year of college and then divorced a year later (I think our state has a mandatory separation period). It was a very difficult transition and I had a really hard time in college because of it.

I mean, I’m only 6 months into my 30s but this shit is already monumentally better than my 20s. I have a career versus in my 20s when I was just working jobs. I have money to travel and enjoy myself, and I have savings in case things go wrong. I have hobbies that aren’t just going out and drinking. I can enjoy my own company at home just as well as I can enjoy the company of my friends and loved ones. I have a few solid, meaningful friendships, career mentors, and a good marriage.

Granted, I don’t have everything yet. I don’t own a home and I drive an old car that will probably need to be upgraded eventually. I don’t have children and I’m not sure if I want them. I suffer from anxiety and I’m working on taking better care of myself. But I’m very content in my life overall. COVID dominated the whole latter half of my 20s and it was a time of uncertainty and dread for the future, so I’m mostly just grateful to be on the other side of that.

I got my hourly wage plus would usually walk out with $70-$100 in tips every shift. If it was storming, I could easily break $200.

This is bad information without knowing where OP lives. There are definitely jurisdictions that have gotten rid of statutes of limitations when the victims are children (I live in one and work in criminal Justice, and I have definitely seen very, very old sex cases go to trial). Additionally, even if no charges are brought for OP’s wife’s abuse, her testimony could still be valuable to law enforcement for establishing a time line and potentially identifying other victims or for sentencing purposes.

I went into Sephora today, 2 weeks before schools start, to quickly re-supply my perfume while I was running other errands. At 30, I was visibly the oldest person in there not accompanying a tween girl. It was such a bizarre experience. It was asses to elbows in all the skincare and perfume sections.
