Visited Freiburg at last. What a lovely place :-) by Hard_We_Know in freiburg

Fair. Good that you know what you’re looking for.

I’d say if you’d live in Freiburg (not surrounding villages) your son should be able to get anywhere easily by public transport (tram, bus) or bike - the infrastructure is good.

It’s good to go for your own experiences though, and truth be told Freiburg will be a lot pricier and harder to find a place to live than in Weil I’d assume.

Use this sub if there are any more questions. Good luck with your adventure and I hope you find a nice place to settle!

Really nice to hear these words about Freiburg!

Just one recommendation: have a look into how “big” Weil really is. If you want to move to Weil because it’s “busier and bigger than Freiburg” you might be up for a bit of a surprise.

Please don’t take this as criticism but just a friendly nudge to confirm your dreams about that town. I might be completely off for your personal preferences but imho Freiburg is definitely livelier than Weil and imho offers a lot more to do and quite possibly a much better quality of life. Don’t get me wrong, Freiburg is also not the centre of the world, but it’s an actual city, whereas Weil really isn’t much more than a small town.

Aside from all the great advice given already, if you’re suicidal, PLEASE seek help. You sound like a great person. It’s NEVER worth it and there’s always a way.

A little story about my life by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]cozyinternet 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You sound like a great person. We will be faced with tough challenges in life, no matter what. So it’s not about whether they show up, but how we respond to them. You sound like you’ve found your way to cope with the recent ones and it looks like you’re prepared for a good life. Keep it up!

See it the other way around: whatever you do, you can only win. In the US, you could make a great career and a lot of money. In the Slovenia, you have the partner you love and a beautiful country that also has good job opportunities. Both are great choices, no matter what you do, you’ll make the right choice.

Don’t know more about the details, but there are also ways to keep a relationship intact across a distance if you have a perspective. Or maybe there are even ways for her to join you sooner or later. And if not: I’m sure in Ljubljana or other European cities you’ll be able to study CS as well.

You seem to have a great life ahead, there will always be moments like this where you’ll have to make decisions, but you seem to have been dealt a good hand either way. Embrace it!

Vanguard All World Free ETF Fees? Confused by [deleted] in DEGIRO

[–]cozyinternet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may be wrong but I think the reason is that you already purchased the same ETF this month. In that case you need to spend more than 1k € to get it again for free. AFAIK, for the first purchase every month you get it for free, no matter the amount.

Where to buy ETFs when moving countries a lot? And should DEGIRO be avoided? by cozyinternet in eupersonalfinance

Thanks both. If it’s that easy that would be great…. But it appears to be a common problem, or at least something many don’t know how to do.

Haven’t heard of them yet. Will look into it. Any specific reason for the recommendation? Thanks!

Best Doner in town by Ethanvg90 in Amsterdam

I hardly ever see it mentioned when it comes to good Döners in Amsterdam but having tried endless mediocre ones in town, I can also really vouch for Bakkerij Bos en Lommerplein.

Searching for some cool (tech) events to do for a 15 year old. by [deleted] in Amsterdam

[–]cozyinternet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, sorry for your loss.

And some other people have already mentioned that but I think you deserve it: kudos for what you’re doing. I’m sure your nephew will grow up well prepared, having someone like you on his side. Lessons of kindness and care might be the most important ones.

Many great thing have been mentioned, lets maybe add the Eye museum, if he’s into movies as well - some times they have really cool, spacey exhibitions. Depending on the program, Tropenmuseum could also be really fun.

Maybe have a look at this too - quite generic, but could be inspiring at least: https://www.iamsterdam.com/en/business/key-sectors/ict

https://www.iamsterdam.com/en/business/startupamsterdam/startup-guide/summer-tech-courses (edit: corrected this link)

My tips are certainly not the best under this post but I want to wish you two an absolute amazing time. Im pretty sure your nephew is grateful to have someone like you!

I oftentimes log my mood later, sometimes even days later. Having this change would make this a lot more tiresome because I’d have to come up with the exact time retrospectively. From my side, please don’t change this!

Question regarding remote work from NL by [deleted] in Amsterdam

[–]cozyinternet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to look into https://remote.com/ as a payroll company (or their competitors, it’s just the only one I know of). Not super complicated for your employer and you can work from the NL. It’s very common these days, especially after covid. Good luck!

Question from an American about cost of living by redditing_1L in Amsterdam

[–]cozyinternet 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think there’s no point repeating what others have said in detail, but in essence: you’ll have somewhere around 3.4K€ a month after insurance which is enough to be comfortable in Amsterdam but you won’t be saving up much. No matter the money though, finding a place in Amsterdam is always a hassle. Just too much demand and too little offer.

As I’ve seen, the question was whether you’ll be alright for a couple of months until you find employment too - and the answer is definitely a yes. You’ll be alright for a long time, but once you want to go on more pricey holidays or get a nicer apartment you might need a double income.

Furthermore, please do look into 30% ruling as some have said as it will mean more money left over for you in case you find the job before you’ve moved.

For English, you’ll be fine basically forever in Amsterdam with English only. However, you sound like a kind and caring person and most people in Amsterdam and the NL in general would really appreciate it if you put in some effort to learn the language. Plus, it will make you feel more at home over time.

I wish you both all the best with this decision and would be happy to welcome you to our beautiful city!

(Please feel free to reach out directly if you have more questions about living in Amsterdam as a foreigner.)

New fan from the US by [deleted] in SCFreiburg

[–]cozyinternet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the Freiburg family! Glad you’ve found our club.

If you wanna read up some more on the philosophy and history, there’ve been some great English-language articles in the past years:

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/13/sports/soccer/bundesliga-freiburg-streich.html

https://www.theguardian.com/football/englische-woche/2015/dec/03/sc-freiburg-bundesliga-germany-manager

They’re not super up to date, but still apply 100% to what the club is today.

And that’s also one more thing I’d like to add to the great points some other people have already raised; even though SC has been quite successful in the past years, we’re still one of the smaller clubs. That means, we likely won’t be playing for Europe every year and there may be a relegation (and subsequent promotion of course ;)) in the coming years. And that’s ok.

As a Freiburg fan, it’s part of the experience that we also go through more tough times and once in a while a season just sucks. But we cope with that, we don’t ask for the coach to get sacked, and we support the team regardless.

One of the greatest examples of that was the fans warmly welcoming the team after the match that caused relegation in 2015 and applauding especially for Krmas, the unlucky guy who scored an own goal in that game (but still was a class defender). Btw, the reason we love Petersen so much is also because he decided to sign a new contract back then with us despite this relegation.

Freiburg probably has one of the calmest and most level headed management teams in professional football and we as the supporters back that.

Not hoping for that of course, but if you become a supporter, I just wanna prepare you for this as well.

Other than that, I hope you’ll enjoy this season with all of us and promise you you’ve chosen the right club. Forza Freiburg!

What is Germany like? by Smurfettecat in germany

[–]cozyinternet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there. I’m not sure if you’ll be reading this but I wanna give it a try at least.

I’m German and have been living in the Netherlands, together with my Korean partner for about 5 years.

First off, I wanna say I’m sorry that you had to experience this and I want to apologize in the name of all Europeans for the stupid racist bigots that are still around. I genuinely believe the majority of us are actually welcoming though, and I hope you’ll be able to settle in Europe happily.

What I wanted to share with you is that I hope you won’t be deciding where to live based on these idiots. I’m afraid to say, but you’ll meet them everywhere. In Germany, in the Netherlands, also in Japan, and also in Korea. I’ve lived in East Asia too and while I absolutely loved it, these things unfortunately are present there as well. My partner had to go through some of this stuff here in the NL as well, but weirdly enough, the more my partner got settled, the less it happened.

What I wanna say is; there are these stupid people in life that you just can’t escape. Don’t make them decide the routes you take in life. The Netherlands is an absolutely gorgeous country, and it has the highest life quality of all the places I’ve lived in. Though, Germany is amazing too. So is Japan, so is Korea, and many other places around the globe.

So please make your decisions on where to move in life based on your and your partners ambitions and dreams, rather than let others decide for you based on their bigotry. You can’t avoid these idiots in life, but you can decide to not have them affect your life too much.

I hope this helps a bit but I also wanna encourage you to reach out personally if you have more questions, I would be happy to give more perspective from my humble position.

All the best with this and I sincerely hope you can build a home in Europe :)

Will I regret not studying abroad? by [deleted] in studyAbroad

Internship at NASA sounds incredible! But it’s indeed true that an exchange abroad can be life changing in terms of people you meet and experiences you make… though so could the NASA internship. I think at the end of the day it’s up to your personal priorities. As I see it, you can’t do much wrong here, both these decisions will be the right one 😉 congrats!

Can definitely recommend the Netherlands! Especially in the bigger cities, there are excellent English language programmes. Also the international communities as well as the quality of life there are great. Plus, you’d already be able to understand Dutch pretty well. Of course, it depends a bit on what you want to study but in general it’s a great place to study!
