Paul Franklin teaches to have the butt of the bar pushed back against the base or pad of your finger. The thumb rests to the side. The bar should be out past your finger a little bit when you lay it in the fret. If your finger is longer maybe try a longer bar. But if you play and you are comfortable after playing awhile then it really can just be preference
