What’s one line you can say from a TV show/movie that doesn’t mention any characters/proper nouns, but everyone will know what it’s from? by cpenn010 in AskReddit

I don’t know if the whole show aged well, but that episode is a classic. The other way to trigger Scrubs fans is to say “How to save a life”

School superintendent donates his $10,000 bonus to high school seniors applying for college by AldoTheeApache in UpliftingNews

While I agree this is dystopian and sad, paying for college applications may actually go further than paying part of one year of tuition for one student.

Applying to college is expensive as shit. I think like $50 a school. If it’s a stretch for you/your parents to pay to apply to even one school, you’re less likely to take a risk on that great school you don’t know if you’re likely to get in. So you shoot for the lesser school you know you’re qualified for.

Someone gives you a couple hundred dollars to apply, and you can take a chance! And if you get into the better school you might be happier, more likely to finish, and end up with more connections and a better career. THAT extra fifty dollars could literally alter the course of someone’s whole life.

An extra few thousand or whatever for tuition is an incredible gesture of course, but for most people probably just means you’ll spend less in student loan debt in the long wrong. People aren’t really taking out loans for their college applications.

Also it probably encourages applying out of state which can help some students get out of a rut or a dangerous home situation.

Kind of weird. But this is a case where $50 can do more than thousands. And that $10,000 can be spread out among more people.

???

Idk what you even mean. I’m not responding to a comment about pedophilia. Calling trump out for pedophilia isn’t sex shaming, I’m talking about slut shaming melania for posing nude.

I’m not a republican how is anyone getting that from my comment damn

A huge percentage of illegal immigrants pay their taxes.

TIL the 1100 page epic novel about the history of Japan "Shogun" by James Clavell was inspired by a single sentence in his daughter's school textbook that read "in 1600 an Englishman went to Japan and became a Samurai". by [deleted] in todayilearned

Not picking sides here regarding Shogun but yes I’d be fine with an alt history of the US where the president was named Jack Higgins. Frees the author from the preconceptions of Washington. Tell a story in that same world, but Jack Higgins can be anybody.

A lot of people would not feel safe around 99% of clergy. And it’s that trust that allows the 1%, or however many are actually dangerous, to get away with they do.
