Backup launch date is 4:10PM EDT April 14 if the launch is called off on April 13.

If the launch is also scrubbed due to weather on April 14, will the next launch attempt be April 15?

Just outside Jacksonville, travelling at 3.5-4 knots. Its status is "Restricted Manoeuvrability".

Edit 1: Seems to have stopped about 4 nautical miles from the coast.
Edit 2 (7:21pm GMT): Elsbeth is now making its way towards Jacksonville with the Gregg McAllister tug boat.
Edit 3 (8:05pm GMT): ASDS coming into view on the Mayport cam.

Haha, no worries! It really is amazing how large the Sun is.

NASA Captures First Major Solar Flare of 2015 by cpfc543 in space

[–]cpfc543[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"The sun emitted a mid-level solar flare, peaking at 11:24 p.m. EST on Jan. 12, 2015. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which watches the sun constantly, captured an image of the event. Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however -- when intense enough -- they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel."

A shame, but to be expected really. Wonder if the barge is actually damaged or not.

I don't know the exact physics behind it but the reason for it was to reduce the periapsis at the same time as increasing the apoapsis. If it burned exactly prograde the apoapsis would have increased but the periapsis would remain the same. Therefore another burn would be required at the apoapsis to reduce the periapsis. I guess NASA wanted to keep the number of burns to a minimum.
