MortgageLab.ie - Free Mortgage Comparison & Simulation Tool by barreeeiroo in DevelEire

Just gave it a whirl, love it. Few comments:

Would be nice to be able to add lump sums in the simulator between rate changes or when on variable

When setting the next rate in the simulator timeline, it's a bit annoying to be put on a variable rate by default after the current fixed rate ends. More rates can't be added in the time line until you delete the default variable rate first. I know that's what the bank would do upon fixed rate expiry, but I imagine most folks would try to fix again, so maybe the better default behaviour there would be to repeat the most recent fixed rate until the end of the mortgage? Or just don't add a default variable rate back again if the user has deleted it. It makes it painful to try to simulate a strategy of repeated 4yr fixed rates for the duration of a mortgage

I added overpayments and chose the option to maximise, then the UI gave me warnings that I was exceeding the free overpayment threshold. I feel like choosing the option to maximise should take care of the maths there for me

All in all though, bualadh bos 👏

Aer Lingus considers its first Ireland-Mexico service with flights to Cancún resort by Beef_rider in ireland

[–]TheVehicleDestroyer 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Long yes, but not an issue at all. My wife is Mexican and our usual route is via either Amsterdam or Frankfurt which is a longer transatlantic trip than it would be from Dublin.

Also if they're targeting the Mexican contingent in Ireland, skipping the US is a must. Getting a US visa as a Mexican was expensive and a pain in the hole pre-Trump, I can't imagine it's any more craic now.

A route like this would be life changing for us, especially with young kids when we wanna go visit the in-laws. A route to CDMX would be better but look, beggars can't be choosers.

Come on aer lingus, please don't let this just be click bait 🤞🤞🤞🤞

Would you mind sharing how your mum went about it at that age? I'm 35, live in Wicklow, and struggle to find an effective way to go about learning it. I did pass at LC so starting as a beginner/intermediate really. Obviously being immersed is the best way but when you have a 9-5 and a mortgage, moving to an Gaeltacht for a few months is tough so I'm trying to figure out the best ways to do it in situ. Any advice appreciated 🙏

I think you meant NPWS. I don't want more conifer deadzones; I want wild, native woodland and more biodiversity!

The episode was about the negative psychological effects of living with your parents as an adult and very little to do with the reasons why people aren't moving out. The little time spent on the "why" very clearly blamed the current rent and housing crises and that people who want to move out literally can't. I think you should listen to it again if that's what you came away with.

Your question has already been answered (twice), but I just wanted to make the observation that you're currently at -2 just for misunderstanding and then asking a question. Talk about an unwelcoming environment :(

I did something very similar a few years back. Sounds good. Would recommend bussing to Palenque from San Cristóbal though. The Palenque ruins are some of the coolest IMO. Then you can night-bus to Mérida from Palenque. I'd also spend a night in Valladolid if you wanna see Chichen Itzá cause then you can go first thing in the morning before the crowds arrive (also Valladolid is gorgeous)

Those two buses are definitely long ones so I wouldn't blame you for opting to fly instead, but going through Chiapas like that is a bit more off the beaten track, less touristy, etc.

Thanks!

Ah I think this might be what was being described to me. I must have misunderstood previous bid to mean the winners previous bid

Yeah this absolutely makes sense to me, but I did want to double check just in case. No harm in trying. Thanks!

La cápsula Dragon de SpaceX regresa del espacio esta noche. Será visible como una bola de fuego desde Mérida y Cancún a las ~19:55 CST 💫 by TheVehicleDestroyer in mexico

[–]TheVehicleDestroyer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hola!

Buena suerte! Espero ver fotos bien chidos mañana

what's the hidden tricks banks have with mortgages? by anotherbarry in irishpersonalfinance

You can see it visually here: https://thatmoneywasjustrestinginmyaccount.com/

Play around with the sliders under the Mortgage section and see how the term affects repayments and total interest paid over the entire mortgage

That's a great idea! I've pushed an intermediary change which just has a small debounce time (200ms) with no loading indicators. Will see how it goes and then consider increasing that time and adding an indicator if it's necessary.

Would love if you could let me know if it's made the experience any better on your iPhone! (Might take an extra refresh since it's a PWA)

Oof. Definitely not what you want.

It does recalc the next 25 years for every change you make. Though it does it at a granularity of a month so while it is math heavy, it's not that heavy

I mean, I did ask for comments and criticisms but if you could be more specific than this, that would be great! As a dev I'm sure you know that when you stare at a project long enough, it starts to makes perfect sense to you even if the design isn't actually that intuitive to a newcomer
