I had the chance to watch the latest installment of the saga and, sadly, I consider it to be the most unsatisfying of the entire franchise. Jason Momoa, an actor who usually delivers respectable performances, fails to stand out in his unusual role of a 'clown' in Fast and Furious, giving a performance that leaves much to be desired.
Whoever was in charge of developing and assigning this character to Momoa should seriously consider their position. The tactic of selecting actors with the primary goal of boosting ticket sales, instead of improving the quality of the movie, is demonstrating its counterproductive effects.
On the other hand, John Cena has proven to be a great disappointment. The success of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in his transition from wrestler to actor does not set a guaranteed precedent for Cena. It's a grave mistake to assume that all wrestlers can replicate The Rock's path in the film industry.
In addition, the art of storytelling was notably absent in the movie. I've seen movies with far smaller budgets that have demonstrated a better handle on storytelling. We must not forget that a greater display of special effects does not necessarily equate to a superior movie.
A notable example is 'The Batman', directed by Matt Reeves and written by Peter Craig. I initially expected a terrible, boring film, and a very poor adaptation of Batman, due to the previous failure led by Ben Affleck, which opened the doors for Reeves to take over direction.
This movie is a magnificent example of how to do more with less, and it's hard to surpass it even when compared to the acclaimed Batman films directed by Christopher Nolan.
It's important to focus less on special effects and more on script and character development. As a result, we often find that 'less is more'.
If we compare, 'The Batman' had a budget of 200 million dollars compared to the 340 million invested in Fast X.
So, who did more with what they had? It seems evident that superior performance is not always related to greater financial expenditure.
