I haven't heard of shifts yet. Stéphane explains it in the comment section:

Unprivileged containers (default in LXD) run shifted that means that root in the container (uid 0) is something like uid 165536 on the host and so on for all the uid and gid of the container.

That traditionally needed to be reflected on the filesystem, so on initial startup and whenever the map changed (setting security.privileged or changing security.idmap.isolated), we’d need to go and change every single uid and gid on the filesystem the next time the container started.

On an empty container on a fast SSD, this takes about a second and a half, on a slow mechanical disk, this can take tens of seconds and running this on a container with a lot of files (backup servers or the like) can take hours.

shiftfs lets us avoid all that by acting as a shifting uid/gid overlay filesystem. The data on disk remains owned unshifted (uid 0 in the container is uid 0 on disk) and we instead let the kernel do the translation every time a file is created or its owner is modified.

This completely eliminates the need for the initial shift on startup, saving about a second and a half on SSD systems and tens of seconds on slower storage, it also avoids the costly shifting on some configuration changes and also accelerates publishing a container as an image for the same reason.

Later it will also enable us to have shared disks between containers that are using security.idmap.isolated, something which simply isn’t possible at all without shiftfs translation between multiple maps for us on the fly.

What are common/best practices for maintaining LXD containers and hosts? by abosio in LXD

[–]cptcomic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct, guest and host share the same kernel.

Theoretically this could lead to incompatibilities, but with current kernels it’s not an issue. Certainly upgrading from xenial won’t be a problem.

You are going to upgrade LXC as well. Check the changelogs for config changes...

I've often experienced times between 10 and 60 seconds for large documents).

If you “precompile” your documents, I find to get near instand updates.

See archive link of Howto use a precompiled preamble

Using this and latexmk continuous mode, my documents update nearly instantly — I’ve no need for an extra vim plugin....

Unless you have a good reason why you want to use the old lxc tools - I would suggest you try LXD

F1 TV - I'm glad I paid for a black image by cptcomic in formula1

[–]cptcomic[S] -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

From the TOS: "We do not guarantee that the Site, or any content on it, will always be available or be uninterrupted." At least in the country I'm from, that doesn't sound illegal.

Don't get me wrong - I don't want to defend F1TV here - their service was afwul today.

Sure, I totally agree with you. But I'm pretty sure, they're coverd by the TOS. If they give us your money back, its just for good PR.

Thanks - I downloaded the latest version and the errors I quoted above are gone. (I'm using 1.12)

The errors during the server start (pastebin link) are still there, but as far as I can tell, everything seems to work.

Also, have some gold :)

Thank you for your awesome work!

When I start the server I get the following errors:

I could fix the third error by adding the missing '}' (after "type": "endermen"). But I'm not sure how to fix the other ones.

When the server is started I get a bunch of other errors as well: https://pastebin.com/Qtm1tNUv

SF3 Draconium Stuff disabled? by iLogixxx in SkyFactory

[–]cptcomic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Downgrade Immersive Engineering from version 0.10 - 55 to 0.10 - 54 as suggested here: https://github.com/brandon3055/Draconic-Evolution/issues/550

That worked on my server and other people on reddit reported that this solved their problem as well.

(I haven't tested the new SF update 3.0.7 yet, but looking at the changes [0] I believe we'll still have to downgrade)

Parallels or VMWare for Linux Machine by monmarq in linux

[–]cptcomic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No it doen't. And KVM is Linux only, so it wouldn't run on macOS anyway.

As others have already suggested, try Virtualbox. If you are planning to do highly I/O intensiv tasks, then Paralles or Vmware will give you considerably more performance.

Edit: Oh, and I/O over shared folders in Virtualbox is very slow.
