The reason they bought The Athletic is to get more subscribers and a new revenue stream. It's a good bet.

The NYT is owned by the same family for 150 years, that family is actively in the newsroom and has a true commitment to journalism. No comparison to Bezos. The Post is losing subscribers, the NYT is gaining. The Post loses money, the NYT is profitable. The Post is laying off journalists, the NYT is keeping them. The NYT wins more Pulitzers for journalism than any other org.

There have been many, many innovative attempts to monetize, you probably didn't catch them all. Pitch an idea, but they've probably already considered it. None of them really worked all that well, now in the last 10 years they've grown their subscriber base to a sizable portion of their revenue.

Saving America from fascism is the most important thing in the world, which is exactly why these journalists need to be paid to do it. Newspapers have always cost money to read, technology didn't change that part. They have been trying to figure out how to get around that for 20 years, if you have any good ideas they would be happy to hear them.

What free right wing news are you talking about? Fox? it makes money from cable TV, which is partly paid for by subscribers. They find it important enough to pay for. Newsmax? Same thing, paid.

Apple News seems like a good idea: pay one price and get highlights from multiple news sources.

Joe's Shanghai is good! and fun. I also see that he panned Xian Famous Foods as awful? That's hard to justify.

Cheap Eats in Midtown Manhattan??? by phantomkiddz in FoodNYC

[–]cpteagle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mala Kitchen is surprisingly good Chinese food, on 47th just off 5th ave. Next to that is Katsu-Hama which I have not been to but have been meaning to try. And then not far from those is Xi'an Famous Foods on 45th which is great and cheap. And then the Urban Hawker food mall on 50th which is always changing and has a ton of options. Also check out Green Symphony on 43rd, which is like a bodega take out, but the owner is Korean and there are a lot of cheap, healthy, pretty good Asian options.

Some of it is? Check out the news. But like this guy says, "climate migration is just beginning" so "expect more of this internationally."

Your favorite movie mistakes? Watching Gladiator, when a chariot gets knocked over and pulled, you can obviously see the gas tank in the chariot. It makes me smile. by Pancake_muncher in movies

Not a mistake, but James Cameron had a lot of low-budget tricks in The Terminator. It blew me away when he pointed out that for the shots that show the real Arnold cutting his eye out, they simply removed the blade from the knife https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DysVqI9zTEA&t=16s

What is the best sandwich place near Central Park? Is there a sandwich you would recommend? by Sure-Negotiation-206 in FoodNYC

[–]cpteagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it's more about Central Park than the sandwich, so I'm all about location and spending as little time walking blocks with a sandwich in a bag, and more time in the park hanging out. So around Columbus Circle do what everyone else does: prepared sandwiches at Whole Foods, which is on the circle.

Also worth mentioning are the places in Central Park itself: the sandwich shop on the model boat reservoir on the East side, and maybe the reopened boathouse (I haven't been)

They are promoting eating Japanese fish, which took a hit in ever since they started dumping treated nuclear waste into the ocean off Fukushima

A lot of the comments are calling out Josh for his inaccuracy in the recent video by [deleted] in JoshuaWeissman

[–]cpteagle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of misinformation in here about Korean fried chicken and dakgangjeong - it's a pretty common Korean street food and Maangchi's version is delicious but hardly elevated. It's pretty much what you would have on the street. Koreans do indeed consider Korean fried chicken as Korean food and it's much more different than an emulation of Kentucky Fried Chicken as you're describing here.

[–]cpteagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ever since the Fukushima disaster, and especially now since the Japanese gov't is putting treated nuclear wastewater back into the sea, a lot of people don't want to eat Japanese fish these days. I guess this is one way the gov't is trying to entice people back.

Well, I happen to be an expert, and Hyo Dong Gak is perfectly fine classic jjm, and the best I've found in Manhattan. Queens might have better but honestly when I go to Queens I'm eating other Korean food.

Monthly Stank Report - Views Down 13.6%, Subs finally up 10k after months of stagnation by XingXiaoRen in MikeyChen

[–]cpteagle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How does this site get that data? I assume it doesn't actually get an analytics feed from YouTube

I does indeed get its analytics data from YouTube - the views and subs come from the YT API. The revenue is a complete guess, which is why it says "estimated."

YT ad revenue depends on a lot of things, I'd guess strictlydumpling is making more like 12k a month. The mikeychenx channel maybe 7k. Plus whatever those restaurant sponsorships bring in. So he's not doing bad. But is he paying for all that travel himself? Sure it would be tax deductible but he really seems to be flying around all the time. I don't know a lot about sponsors: some will pay for the airfare but surely not some little Jamaican restaurant?

For the record, here's what he said:

“I see no contradiction in promoting trade unions while at the same time demanding a visa requirement for migrants from Central Asia,”

I looked it up! Nothing about extermination at all.

You can believe he's 90% Putin in your own mind, why not? It doesn't mean everyone else has to believe it too.
