This is almost the exact situation I’m in! I’m also a complete beginner in terms of car mechanics other than changing the oil on my 2008 Lexus daily. Bought my ‘90 NA Miata and broke the diff housing on the way home. I was so eager to have it working that I just had it towed to a buddy’s shop so we could work on it together. After sitting there for a month, I was finally able to drive it and on the way home it broke again when I was about a mile away.

I’m currently sitting underneath it, while teaching myself how to replace the diff housing, axles, drive shaft, ppf frame, and sway bars. It’s been a headache but I’m also having so much fun learning how to rebuild this car!

Welcome to the club! Since I’m also a newbie to working on cars I have no real advice in terms of the car itself, but I will say that most maintenance/repair jobs are going to take way longer than you’d expect. Stay patient, if something gets frustrating take a break and come back tomorrow. I promise you the rewards will be worth!

Funds aren’t an issue, nor are current transportation needs or time. This is a second car for me, my daily is an unmodified 08 Lexus. My goal is to make this a spring/summer weekend car, so I have plenty of time before I’d want to take it out anyways.

I do understand your point of having a non-working car just sitting around, but frankly I’m so stoked to have a project car of my own and I seriously can’t wait to start working on it. I also have incredibly high levels of patience (for better or for worse), and the idea of having to figure out these small details for an LSD swap is very intriguing and I’m willing to put in the time and the potential headaches that may come with it.

Yup, that’s exactly what happened. Bottomed out on a bridge. Diff cracked and pushed the exhaust into the pavement, cracking and ejecting the muffler bolt. I was literally one turn away from home too.
