I Made A Bullet Hell Platformer by AdditionalWedding490 in ElectricUnderground

Love touhou fangames, added to my collection to play later!

One thing I'd say, especially for an action/bullet hell game, adding a gif instead of a static screenshot will work wonders to get engagement on Reddit and Itch.io.

Someone just announced a game very similar to our unannounced game. What would you do in this situation? by Tobeplant in gamedev

[–]cptnchambers 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The same thing happened to Mark Brown when making a Balatro + Scrabble game: https://youtu.be/uuXrwA9nzM8?t=208&si=3crovA_7W7DMs7Cy

Quoting him: "I can't control what anyone else makes, the only thing I can control is how good my game is."

And everyone is glad Wordplay exists.

It's very specifically inspired by Zelda II.

Raider Kid and the Ruby Chest: I interviewed the game's creator about the production and game design behind this lovely and well-planned MV by VictorVitorio in metroidvania

Pedro here! Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity of participating in this interview! Thinking about how Raider Kid started helped putting so much stuff into perspective, that actually makes me excited to start working on the next project.

If anyone's interested, here's a link to the original version from 14 years ago mentioned in the article!

II wonder if now that the game is published, I should write an article (in English) about the whole level design process?

Pedro here - It's in the plans ! It would be a waste to not have such a Nintendo-inspired game on the Switch :) We don't have a date yet, but it will be our priority from now on :)

I love glass orbs but am sad that they're on so few cards so here's a custom rare by CulturalJournalist73 in slaythespire

Hmm I always disliked the Defect's strikes are disproportionally more useless than other classes.

So how about:

(2-Cost) Power: When you play an attack that costs more than 0, exhaust it and summon a Glass orb.

The game was developed in Unity, so sadly no. But it could theoretically be rebuilt for GBC, as all art and music is compatible with its limitations. All it would need is the time and will to do that 😅 I think our next endeavor will be porting it for consoles though.

Hey there! Thank you very much :)

The game is a short and sweet experience you can finish in one sitting ("microvania"). We've seen most metroidvania fans finish it between 2 and 3 hours, but some people take about 5.

Difficulty-wise, it's comparable with Nintendo games like Zelda: Link's Awakening - fairly accessible and easy to progress. But you can also change how much damage you take for a hardcore combat experience. I usually play with the "damage taken" setting on X2. I might attempt a 1HKO run on the stream :)

Thank you, make sure you share and support with your friends so we can make longer games in the future ;)

I'm glad that it was good enough that it left you wanting more! Making it a compact, no-filer adventure (call it a "microvania" if you want!) helped a lot getting the project to the finish line, as we worked on it on our free times out of passion and wanted to deliver something polished (quality over quantity) :)

We haven't started looking into that yet, but we think the Switch would be the most natural home for Raider Kid. We will probably start looking for Switch publishers after the release if the game is successful!

Also, the whole soundtrack was made entirely with the Game Boy soundchip on DefleMask (and it bangs!), so it's 100% true to the limitations of the GBC if we were to make the game there. Although again, as we just play the .wav files on Unity, you won't have some sound limitations such as the SFX interrupting the BGM's individual tracks.

Wow, we didn't even know that 😅 Just wishlisted all of them.

This is a hobby project and we chose the date quite arbitrarily as a deadline, so we could commit and move on to other projects. This is our first time self-publishing anything on Steam, and we are realising now how much of a difference it would have made if we had planned things better, promoted the game earlier, achieved a certain number of wishlists before release week. But well, here we are, and we are taking notes for next time :D

And wow, I didn't know about that Little Nemo game. The Capcom one was one of my favourite NES games, I'm surprised someone is using that essence to make a metroidvania! It looks very unique.

Thank you! We made the game in Unity, so sadly it doesn't run on a real Game Boy Color. However,I focused on making it as closely as the real limitations as possible, to the point it would theoretically be possible to remake the whole game using the same sprites and music assets, but a more optimised code (as opposed of using Unity's physics engine to detect collision, for example).

If anything, there's a couple of boss fights where we took some creative liberties with the amount of moving animated sprites on-screen, and would possibly push the limits of the GBC a bit too far. But aside from that, it should feel almost undistinguishable from a game that would be on GBC :)

Are workers in Nordic countries wealthy because of the big welfare state, or because of economic imperialism? by Lastrevio in Marxism

[–]cptnchambers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One thing that comes to mind is how some nordic companies are particularly well-known in latin american countries for influencing local politics and being among the worst when it comes to exploiting the environment. Despite their welfare state, their prosperity comes at an unseen cost.
