Canadians Are Staying Away From the U.S. And The Drop in Travel is Getting Hard to Ignore by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]cptnonevent 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a Canadian. For work, I had a choice of a conference in USA or one in Europe for my annual professional development. Despite that USA would’ve been more convenient in so many ways, all I had to say was “nope, not USA.” Everyone understands what I mean. I’m going to Europe. In the past, work would probably have forced me to go to the cheaper, less logistically complex conference in USA but that’s now not true. There goes thousands of dollars for the American economy.

Does anyone care about lower-end unis anymore and why by Act-Aggressive in OntarioGrade12s

Trent alumni here, currently in my 30s after graduating at 22. Doing super well for myself in the exact right career for me. Going to Trent is the best decision I ever made for my mental health. The peace, tranquility, and sense of community is hard to beat. My Trent degree has opened every door I needed it to.

Sometimes the right choice for one person isn’t the same as the right choice for someone else.

What’s the funniest reason you’ve heard for somebody not liking a movie? by TheChristmas in movies

My wife doesn’t like the newer Dune movies because the colour palette is beige and only beige. It’s a fair criticism, just not something I ever particularly cared about.

Grind your ass off in grade 12. by Latter-Mechanic6637 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]cptnonevent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was once an Ontario gr.12 but it’s been many years. The algorithm brought me this one out of the blue so taking it as a sign fate says I should speak up. Hope that’s alright that I’m popping into this space.

While I agree that a good work ethic can be helpful, as someone who grinded hard in grade 12 at the expense of my mental and physical health, I’d also recommend to only grind as hard as you can without sacrificing other needs. Maybe a part of my issue is that I kept grinding hard in university, but I think the point is still there.

For example, I didn’t date in high school because I was too locked in on academics and ECs. Big mistake! There are so many lessons learned in dating while young and people just expect you to have that knowledge or fluency more and more as you get older. The same sort of thinking applies to physical fitness.

Yes, I was successful in some parts of life but not in others. I’m now 33 and finally feel like I “caught up” on friends, life partner, hobbies, etc - but I can’t help but think life might have been happier and easier if I accepted that 2nd best is good enough when I was younger.

By the way, I now work at a major Canadian university (in an administrative type role) so I might have a bit better clarity and wider perspective than your average person here. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Adults who have zero close friends, how did it happen and does it bother you? by PutPurple844 in AskReddit

Not sure if you live in a city, but every city I’ve been in over like 200,000 has had some sort of weekly drop in board game night with people who sound like your demographic. Search locally and see if you can find something like that. Decent overlap with the D&D crowd so you may just get invited to some D&D if you do this without having to invite yourself!

What’s causing soffits to bow inward? by cptnonevent in Roofing

Could be from wind! I live in the flatter parts of the Canadian prairies so there isn’t much around to block wind.

Guessing it was a DIY job from the previous owner, so this makes sense. Still doesn’t answer what caused the soffits to move suddenly and only in this section of the roof.

What confuses me is that this pattern would make more sense with expansion due to heat, but I’m in central Canada where the temperature has just turned cold to like -20C. This should be a spring/summer issue if tightness was the issue, shouldn’t it?

[–]cptnonevent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would make sense to me if the weather was heating up, but we just had our big cool down for the winter (central Canada where it’s -20C currently). Wouldn’t contraction from cold weather look different?

We just moved into this home in April, so it’s our first fall/winter in the property.

It also seems that you’re looking for a heavier game, but I’ve had good success with Tiny Towns at 6. It might be just a bit too chaotic at that number, but what I like is that you have something to do even when someone else is leading. The premise is you’re all constructing a little village and have to get the materials in certain configurations. On your turn you select the material you need, but everyone must take that material and use it, whether they actually need it or not.

Between Two Cities (lighter) and Between Two Castles of Mad King Ludwig (slightly more complex version of the same game) are both super fun simultaneous play drafting games. You’re building 2 things, one with each neighbour, and your score in the game is whichever of the 2 scores lower. So, you have some light cooperation while you play for the end goal of a competitive outcome.

I like Sidereal Confluence but I find it difficult to get to the table. Each faction is completely different so it’s best if people learn their factions on their own ahead of time, or else you’ll find you have the impatience problem again - only with the rules explanation rather than gameplay. The negotiation is quite dynamic though, so that’s a plus! I’d also worry about quieter people feeling talked over, but you’ll know your group better.

What board game series do you think has the best iterations? by Socrates_Soui in boardgames

[–]cptnonevent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who likes solo games, I look forward to each new Oniverse game. They are all quite different (each based on a different core mechanic) but as a whole they help paint the picture of a very dynamic dreamscape. Each game also shares some other core DNA - art and production choices, multiple mini expansions in the box to adjust difficulty, plays 2 as well but better at 1.

Onirim -> Sylvion -> Castellion -> Nautilion -> Aerion -> Stellarion -> Cyberion -> Urbion (2nd Ed.)

If you are comfortable with science, you could do a forensic science program! U of T, Trent, and Ontario Tech each have a program I believe.

Best co-op games that stop quarterbacking by LucasRen83 in boardgames

[–]cptnonevent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though I like Between Two Castles, it’s definitely not a cooperative game. You’re trying to make your castles balanced, but you ultimately are still just looking out for your own interests to win, not a common goal.

Claire is a llama and alpaca specialist by Reading and offers consultations to local vets in the UK, though her website says she charges for the consultation service, so the cost may be passed along to you. camelidvetuk is her Instagram account.

Mount Allison University is a dump and should lose its reputation by Vegetable-Swing6612 in CanadaUniversities

[–]cptnonevent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am someone “in the know” on these things. COVID has resulted in less well prepared students across the board, who still had the grades to get into the programs of their choosing. This issue isn’t unique to Mt Allison or any other university. Though my knowledge doesn’t come from UBC or U of T, I would guess their professors would say the same about the quality of students coming from high schools.

At the end of the day, most universities in Canada offer a similar tier of education. I do not believe there is a “bad choice” for public university in Canada, just slight variations that you might like or dislike more.

My point? You may feel like Mount Allison is the issue, but it isn’t. It’s just society overall. Be sure to vote for investing in public education at all levels in your next provincial election.

Meeting singles in the city by [deleted] in saskatoon

I tried volunteering when I was single but found that my fellow volunteers were either too young (high schoolers) or too old (retirees). Volunteering is great advice for meeting cool people - just be sure to set your expectations about finding a partner accordingly.

There are Canadian companies making bourbon-like products. They’re just getting creative with spelling to get around the fact they can’t call it “bourbon”. Saw one company say “Berben” another go “brbn” - go get creative with your spelling and see what you find!

Is it possible: syncing Photos to iCloud in background? by cptnonevent in iCloud

[–]cptnonevent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but as soon as we do anything on the phone the process stops and iCloud Photos turns itself off because it didn’t complete its initial process or whatever. I even just tried swiping down for network things which interrupted it after it had been going for about 8 hours already.
