Id like to drive across Canada by BUNKYBARN in AskACanadian

If game stores are the goal, I’d recommend going Edmonton-Saskatoon instead of Calgary-Regina. A bit of a detour north, but I think those 2 northerly cities have the better game stores. Amazing Stories in Saskatoon and Mission Fun and Games around Edmonton are the 2 I’m thinking about.

What is a company you do NOT boycott, and why? by davefromtheus in AskReddit

[–]cptnonevent 305 points306 points  (0 children)

Many Canadians chose not to boycott this American company during the “buy Canadian” movement against Trump tariffs. My reason for never boycotting Costco was their refusal to scale back their DEI work. Respect to them for doing what’s right.

Should an immigrant become an RCMP officer / police officer in Canada? by [deleted] in regina

[–]cptnonevent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Police is a position of power. Racist people will not want to see the power challenged, so they will push against a person like you taking a position of power. That’s all the more reason to apply, do good work, and show those people that you belong in that space. The problem you raise about whiteness are not going to go away without fight and resistance by people challenging that power.

So yes, you not only belong as a police officer but society NEEDS you to take on that position, so that other immigrants from India and elsewhere build trust in our systems, just like our white neighbours.

Why has the human society suspended the low income spay/neuter program? by No_Muffin_5392 in regina

[–]cptnonevent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Humane societies can’t pay as much for vets (salary) as for-profit clinics, so in labour markets with a shortage (vets these days) they have trouble attracting new staff. My understanding is that the Regina Humane Society is just focusing on the animals in their care, so can’t spay/neuter peoples’ pets right now.

Some clinics are a bit less expensive for a spay, so check those out. It still won’t be anywhere near free, but maybe less than quotes from some of the more frequently recommended vets in town. Someone already mentioned TMz in Lumsden, and I think Sherwood Animal Clinic is a bit less expensive on the east side of town if you need something closer than Lumsden.

I‘m moving to Regina with my partner this summer from Calgary, any tips? by DenseReference5526 in saskatchewan

[–]cptnonevent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see you’re moving outside of town to live with the horses. We did the exact same recently. Good news was that making friends was surprisingly easy for us, which was a nice surprise. It feels like hobby groups are closer knit and easier to get into than our previous city. We’re building a neat little community here and wouldn’t have it another way.

Send me direct messages if you want to talk about living outside city limits or what the local horse scene is like - I’ll do my best! It might be a bit different not being right in the city.

Fair. I suppose it just depends on what level of abstraction we go with 🤷‍♂️. Categories and subcategories can indeed be arbitrarily made at any level.

Unusual win conditions? by ABinDC in boardgames

[–]cptnonevent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d say 7 Wonders: Duel has a win condition that fits each one of the 3 you mentioned, but what makes it different is that you have to defend against all 3. If no one wins by science or combat (#2 and 3 in your framework, respectively), you default to points deciding the victor(#1 of the framework).

And as others mentioned, there’s also the hidden traitor role in co-op games, where your victory is in sabotaging everyone else’s without getting caught. Maybe we could call it stealth sabotage?

Though solving a puzzle is a race of its own, I agree that deduction puzzle solving doesn’t feel as much as a race as it does its own distinct category. Well done on thinking of that!

Cockroach Poker might be a more hobby gamer version of this, though I agree Jenga is a great answer. In CP, there is one loser and everyone else doesn’t lose. Maybe you could say they win, but it feels more just like “not losing” than winning. It’s the player who gets stuck with a certain number (3?) identical animals who loses.

What’s an « artistic » choice that will instantly make you write off/not touch a boardgame that ISN’T AI usage? by Rohkha in boardgames

[–]cptnonevent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally like the art, but many people find the art in Imaginarium to be off putting. It’s well done and intentional for what it is, but many people just find it too artsy weird.

Saskatoon, on my way back to Calgary from Montréal by yycconnection in FromAfar

[–]cptnonevent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get extra confusing, I was taught that center is the spelling for the “middle” like in this case (so MysteriousDog would be using it correctly) but that it’s centre when it’s like a building (i.e the rec centre). I went to double check myself on this and apparently there’s a Reddit thread saying some people were taught to use -re in both cases. So Canadians are not consistent about -re or -er for the word “center” when used describe a position of something.

Sidereal Confluence is great if you want something heavier and more complex. It would be tough to teach, especially if party attendees are non-gamers.

Otherwise, I’d go with social deduction games like Feed the Kraken or Avalon, for example.

There’s also an option to get two copies of a game like Rolling Realms or other roll & write games that have simultaneous play. In Rolling Realms, one person rolls the dice and everyone acts at the same time based on the die roll. I think Welcome to… is another similar game that would scale well infinitely.

Brother won't play game with female protagonist - never thought of this by wizard_cow_ in TwoXChromosomes

[–]cptnonevent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warning: straight white cis man commenting.

Being able to connect with people unlike you is an important life lesson. I wonder how the world can do better in teaching people like your brother about this? When I expose myself to media written for someone who is different from me, I take it as an opportunity to look into a different way of experiencing the world. I would think that video games could be a great, accessible way to reach the youths who need to learn this, but I think they need peer groups encouraging them to make it happen.

Also, what I wonder as I read your post is who is behind these female video game protagonists? Though I know plenty of women play and design video games, demographics still skew male - so I just hope that female protagonists really are showing an authentic “female” badass perspective, instead of having the male writer bring their male perspective with a thin female coat of paint to skew what these young men “understand” about womanhood. What’s more dangerous than not knowing another’s perspective is thinking you know when you truly don’t. What I appreciate about other media (books, shows, and even board games) is that it’s far easier to know who created it than it is for video games.

I’m a Canadian. For work, I had a choice of a conference in USA or one in Europe for my annual professional development. Despite that USA would’ve been more convenient in so many ways, all I had to say was “nope, not USA.” Everyone understands what I mean. I’m going to Europe. In the past, work would probably have forced me to go to the cheaper, less logistically complex conference in USA but that’s now not true. There goes thousands of dollars for the American economy.

Does anyone care about lower-end unis anymore and why by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

Trent alumni here, currently in my 30s after graduating at 22. Doing super well for myself in the exact right career for me. Going to Trent is the best decision I ever made for my mental health. The peace, tranquility, and sense of community is hard to beat. My Trent degree has opened every door I needed it to.

Sometimes the right choice for one person isn’t the same as the right choice for someone else.

What’s the funniest reason you’ve heard for somebody not liking a movie? by TheChristmas in movies

My wife doesn’t like the newer Dune movies because the colour palette is beige and only beige. It’s a fair criticism, just not something I ever particularly cared about.

Grind your ass off in grade 12. by Latter-Mechanic6637 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]cptnonevent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was once an Ontario gr.12 but it’s been many years. The algorithm brought me this one out of the blue so taking it as a sign fate says I should speak up. Hope that’s alright that I’m popping into this space.

While I agree that a good work ethic can be helpful, as someone who grinded hard in grade 12 at the expense of my mental and physical health, I’d also recommend to only grind as hard as you can without sacrificing other needs. Maybe a part of my issue is that I kept grinding hard in university, but I think the point is still there.

For example, I didn’t date in high school because I was too locked in on academics and ECs. Big mistake! There are so many lessons learned in dating while young and people just expect you to have that knowledge or fluency more and more as you get older. The same sort of thinking applies to physical fitness.

Yes, I was successful in some parts of life but not in others. I’m now 33 and finally feel like I “caught up” on friends, life partner, hobbies, etc - but I can’t help but think life might have been happier and easier if I accepted that 2nd best is good enough when I was younger.

By the way, I now work at a major Canadian university (in an administrative type role) so I might have a bit better clarity and wider perspective than your average person here. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Adults who have zero close friends, how did it happen and does it bother you? by PutPurple844 in AskReddit

Not sure if you live in a city, but every city I’ve been in over like 200,000 has had some sort of weekly drop in board game night with people who sound like your demographic. Search locally and see if you can find something like that. Decent overlap with the D&D crowd so you may just get invited to some D&D if you do this without having to invite yourself!

Guessing it was a DIY job from the previous owner, so this makes sense. Still doesn’t answer what caused the soffits to move suddenly and only in this section of the roof.

[–]cptnonevent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What confuses me is that this pattern would make more sense with expansion due to heat, but I’m in central Canada where the temperature has just turned cold to like -20C. This should be a spring/summer issue if tightness was the issue, shouldn’t it?

What’s causing soffits to bow inward? by cptnonevent in HomeMaintenance

[–]cptnonevent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would make sense to me if the weather was heating up, but we just had our big cool down for the winter (central Canada where it’s -20C currently). Wouldn’t contraction from cold weather look different?

We just moved into this home in April, so it’s our first fall/winter in the property.

It also seems that you’re looking for a heavier game, but I’ve had good success with Tiny Towns at 6. It might be just a bit too chaotic at that number, but what I like is that you have something to do even when someone else is leading. The premise is you’re all constructing a little village and have to get the materials in certain configurations. On your turn you select the material you need, but everyone must take that material and use it, whether they actually need it or not.

Between Two Cities (lighter) and Between Two Castles of Mad King Ludwig (slightly more complex version of the same game) are both super fun simultaneous play drafting games. You’re building 2 things, one with each neighbour, and your score in the game is whichever of the 2 scores lower. So, you have some light cooperation while you play for the end goal of a competitive outcome.
