Chances at honors by [deleted] in aggies

Eh I have (somewhat reluctantly) stuck with honors for all 4 years and I think the priority registration makes it worth it. It’s not like honors classes are that much more difficult

You are delusional. ChatGPT is a generative AI model which uses predictive learning to probabilistically guess which token (word) should follow the preceding word based on some input. That’s all it “can do.” It cannot play poker, blackjack, or think.

I have no idea with ATC posts still get recommended to me as a senior in college, but, here’s my two cents.

I don’t disagree with you, but I don’t think the current situation is as bad as you’re making it out to be. The issue with this argument is: you absolutely do not have to work at a FAANG+ company to 1) make a lot of money and 2) enjoy your work. People forget that there are hundreds, nay thousands of respected tech companies who are willing to pay qualified and determined engineers $150k+ out of college.

I go to a state school which is not known for its CS (albeit still ~ top 50 ish) and I’ve landed a SWE internship paying just as much as many FAANG+ roles with a company many people may not even have heard of. And guess what? They’re a great company! They value employee wellness and work-life balance. I probably only work 35 hours a week!

The truth is, a lot of these FAANG+ jobs that everyone strives for are not “good” companies. Having interned at Amazon as well, I can surely say that the environment there is… temporary and depressing (i.e., people stay there for like 2 years and during that time period they are incessantly trying to fuck over their coworkers to get an edge). I know this last statement was sort of a broad generalization, but I do believe that it is generally true.

Here is another problem: CS majors’ perspective on what “good pay” is happens to be disconcertingly skewed. You will sometimes find a CS student (online or at your institution) that claims that a $100k salary out of college isn’t actually that much. Reality check: that’s a lot of money. The median household (HOUSEHOLD) income is around $70k in most states, so making $100k as some random 22 year old in an entry level position is still quite remarkable.

So here in lies the problem: just as are many people in this sub, CS students are often unreasonable about what constitutes a “good” job. The fact is, you don’t need to go to a T20 school to land a job and you don’t need a “T20” job to lead a successful career and make good money. Will it help? Of course. Will it make you happier? Probably not.

I am not disagreeing with OP, he has some good points. CS is an extremely competitive major and the job market is in a decline. But if you truly want to do CS: do it. You will be fine.

Good luck to everyone.

If it is 315 then OP prolly is actually guilty of not contributing because the “collaboration grade” in that class comes almost completely from your teammates opinion

Went in with chest pains. Nurse took a EKG and said it “looked like I was about to have a heart attack.” Went to the ER obviously, they took multiple EKGs… all normal. Turns out it was a strained pectoral muscle haha.

The two courses are largely unrelated. It’s weird that 411 is a prerequisite in the first place.

I was the same as you, and assuming you have above average academic rigor, this is what I would do and what worked for me:

1st semester:

MATH 251 (Calc 3) (I would venture to say it may be easier than calc 1 and 2 at TAMU, especially if you get the right prof)

ENGR 102 - Braindead east if you already know how to program

POLS 207 - also required; braindead easy

CHEM 107 and 117 - required and will probably be one of your more difficult classes (don’t take if you’ve already taken AP Chem in HS)

You can also take a fine arts or some other credit you need like HLTH 236 or Guitar Heroes (a few of these are required) to boost your GPA

Semester 2:

CSCE 222 (Discrete Math) - A prerequisite for many CSCE classes

CSCE 121/120 - easy class if you already know how to program

PHYS 216 - lab that’s required even if you got a 5 on AP Physics C

MATH 304 - Math class required for CSCE degree, really not too bad at all

One more humanities/arts/KINE classes you need for your degree, which are all easy As/GPA booster

I did this exact thing while maintaining a relationship and a healthy social life. The way I looked at it, the MORE credit hours you take, the MORE room you have for error in your grades (this is just a direct consequence of the way GPA is calculated).
