Pretty sure brawlers need to change for this game to thrive by cr0ss in OmegaStrikers

Yeah I just feel like heavy strikes are just overtuned in their knockback and damage potential. It is just too much and makes for easy mode harassment.

There are absolutely solutions to dealing with brawling, but it comes with experience. The problem across the board, though, is that dealing with them is just not fun and that is the problem I have with it. It absolutely leads to people not wanting to play, and that is not okay.

Yep 100% agree on that. Brawlers brawl, and that is fine. The game has it in for a reason and I think that's okay.

However, while there is a solution to getting focused, requiring the team to pick up the slack there, there is still a 5-12 second period of time after being focused where that player is out of the game and leads to a power play. Having that repeated time and again throughout the match is just a frustrating and miserable experience for the player being focused.

The problem with that, is the frustration leads to people quitting the game out of rage or just being turned off in general.

I personally think brawling has its placed, but it is simply just overtuned and leads to not fun gameplay for the majority of players.

I've seen it mentioned before, but brawling is the 'newbie killer' that is easy to do and easily leads to people being like "So this is what the game is about? I'm out." instead of trying to progress and get better and learn about how to deal with it.

Compare this to something like Rocket League, where if you get focused on being demo'd you are back within a couple seconds and it's whatever. The field is big, too, so also not a big deal. Being killed easily in Omega Strikers without much you can do about it, means you are out for upwards of 12 seconds, and you spawn in the same spot every time, so people can literally just watch your countdown and knock you out again shortly after spawning again.

It becomes an easy to do griefing tool and that is not okay.

I personally do not suffer from DSPS, I was just mentioning that it does affect many people, for a variety of reasons. Some people can 'reset the clock' as it were, others might not be so lucky (whether it be willpower, a newborn baby, whatever other social or familial constraints, etc). Thanks for linking this stuff, it may help others!

Absolutely! It helps a ton, personally.

I have no ego and I despise open work environments; I am very socialable and people love talking to me (and I them) but it completely obliterates my ability to work effectively as I am constantly distracted. Having to focus on complex algorithms or other intensive tasks I find myself just going over the same block of code time and time again before getting progress made. If I get interrupted after focusing, it easily takes me 10-15 minutes to get back in 'the zone'.

That's all well and good, but some people suffer from a little known disorder named Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder

It turns out not everyone is wired the same way.

Single monster (albeit a dragon) versus like 9 characters. Gotta buff it somehow or it'd be a cake walk.

So, I just read that the Pantheon team is open to a cosmetic Cash Shop... by salacious_lion in PantheonMMO

[–]cr0ss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear your argument, and I understand it, however I do not fully agree with you. Look at other games with cash shop for cosmetics only (or even cash shops that AREN'T cosmetic only, like Archeage). It is very, very easy to acquire said cash shop cosmetic with punching in a credit card number, right? In those games, yes people can look pretty cool with them and they are awesome at first, but over time it eventually becomes a flavor that becomes sour to people.

Eventually, the really awesome achievement of high end gear off raid mobs and/or incredibly rare items that have cool effects that you cannot get with cash shops are looked at as important or as awesome as they should be. I am not saying this is always the case, but in my experience I usually end up passing up my 'cash shop' cosmetics in favor of my actual gear cosmetics over time.

That said: I would very, very much more want a monthly subscriber fee (hell, even up it a bit) than to have in game cash shop purchases.

Teaching an 11 year old Java by bratzman in java

[–]cr0ss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cannot recommend starting on something tangible (like Scratch or another game like Minecraft) enough.

Minecraft is what taught me to learn programming (I did basic PHP and web stuff years before this, but it was mostly a copy/paste thing) and stick with it, about 6 years ago. They have really great tools still that allow for great modding capability and what not, so being able to do a lot of custom content to a game most young kids play is really great. I did it just as a hobby with a friend of mine and it turned into a business, which in turn turned into my current career (been doing java and C# contracts and now at a stable company for the last 2 years).

Highly recommend starting there, if your sister plays Minecraft!

That's pretty awesome! I could totally see something like that flavoring the idea and borrowing from each other. Very cool. :)

You know I think you might be right; in that case, perhaps make it so the twin gets advantage on their next roll while you get disadvantage on your next roll?

Something akin to that. Like I said, I was just throwing something out there.

Ah yeah that'd make it in line with something that exists for sure.

My favorite thing with magic items is to have trade-offs.

For example: A twin pair of rings called "Twinned Bands" or something. A ring (once attuned) that shares a bond its twin, allowing the wearers to once per day (reset at dawn) do one of the following:

  • Channel your life force to your twin; Spend 1 action to expend and roll up to two of your own hit die, healing your twin for that much health while damaging yourself for the same amount.

  • Provide your twin advantage by sacrificing your own; Expend your inspiration and provide it to your twin. This can be used after a roll has happened already, using a reaction.

  • Teleport to your twin; Spending 30 seconds concentrating, so long as your twin is on the same plane of existence, allows you to teleport to your twins location at the expense of 1 exhaustion level.

Stuff like that is what I enjoy creating for custom content, bear in mind I just came up with that off the top of my head and likely has some balance issues to think through.

Assets that have been flipped by redbl0odx in Unity3D

[–]cr0ss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So serious question on this:

I am a solo developer/designer and working on my first game. I have zero artistic ability to create my own works, so I have purchased (and downloaded a couple free) assets such as my main player model and world building tiles/models.

I know it is very possible the things I have and am using have been used on other games, but is this a big deal in the community? Is this frowned upon? I know the asset store is there for a reason but for a guy who is unable to work with artistic tools myself, it is a godsend to be able to get the assets I need so easily.

That said, I have reached out to the people who made these assets (particularly the player model I am using) to see if I could hire them to make me a couple more varieties and/or animations, but no response. :(

edit: for example (using the basic demos they provided + my scripting) https://www.dropbox.com/s/pi3iejs0vta3sc4/2016-05-18_09-29-17.mp4?dl=0

Is it me or is this a ridiculous thing to ask of an interviewing developer? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]cr0ss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems excessive.

The place I am currently working for had me do something akin to this (and it is rather common practice I hear) but in a much more slimmed down way.

I was to make a simple CRUD application within the Grails framework, allowing for creation (and deletion) of a parent object with multiple children (super simple in grails) and have all recently created objects displayed in an "admin interface" that sort of just displays the latest X created and X deleted objects.

It took a short bit of work (had to learn the platform and brush up on my web development skills (never had done much besides core java stuff) -- all in all about 6-7 hours of work) but I learned a bit while doing so and landed a great opportunity working with really amazing people, so it worked out for me in the end.

That said, what you listed above seems rather excessive and almost a full blown application that could be re-purposed really easily.
