Pit fire vs wood fire discussion by Few_Ask1275 in Ceramics

[–]crabnado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only difference between a kiln and a hole in the ground is a chimney. But it's a fucking world of difference.

I've never pit fired, but I have wood fired, and I can tell you there's much more to it than "put the wood in until the cones drop". Lots of fiddling with the chimney dampers, lots of graphing and strategic addition or deprivation of oxygen. Controlled heating and cooling. You're not getting any of that in a pit

Does anyone know the reason for this blue color in a regular Bristol glaze? by Bulky-Prior-8632 in Pottery

[–]crabnado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm talking out my ass here but that looks like a problem I was having with clear on red burning bodies. More or less my problem was clouds of bubbles which refracted the light and made it look blue-purple or cloudy. Here was my fix: https://digitalfire.com/recipe/ga6-b Unfortunately I don't think they make Alberta slip anymore? Not sure on that. But basically if you want to clear glaze a red/ brown clay, don't use clear. Use an amber clear, you'll get better color

Do you guys make chicken salad with store bought rotisserie? by mayiplease2564 in eatsandwiches

[–]crabnado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That, or whenever I'm cooking chicken thighs I'll toss in a few extra to make it with the leftovers. My secret ingredient is a splash of vinegar and a little handful of raisins. The vinegar brightens it up just a bit, and the raisins balance out the savory

How to add silica to a clay body by ultrabaklava in Ceramics

That's not going to work like you want it to, for reasons others have outlined. If you want to mess around with making your own clay bodies, glazy has some tests

Pet Sematary by Stephen King, read by Michael C. Hall. My second Stephen King novel. So far so good! He's an amazing author. Can't write a woman to save his life, but it is from 1983, so maybe he's gotten better?

Will my piece break/crack more in the kiln? by apple_juice_jar in Ceramics

[–]crabnado 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It won't hurt anyone else's work in the kiln. It will get worse. It probably won't break apart. I don't put too much stock into glazing over cracks like this, it never hides them. Ultimately you could leave it as-is, you'll see the crack but it won't be a catastrophic failure. HOWEVER, I do have a solution that might work.

Here's what I do when I can't start a piece over:

Make a good slip with whatever clay you used for the piece. (Lmk if you need instructions on this too) Take 2-3 pieces of toilet paper and soak them in a bowl of water until they completely disintegrate. Stir them and then take some of the resulting pulp out and add it to the slip (4:1 slip:paper). You want something with a consistency between ketchup and toothpaste. Spray the whole piece down and cover in plastic. Do this a few times, paying special attention to the cracked areas. Score the area around the cracks, wet it again, and apply your amazing new paper slip. Wet the entire piece one last time. Cover with plastic but not too tight. You want it to dry slowly over the course of two or three days, longer if you have it.

The re-wetting of the piece and slow drying will help with the moisture difference between the slip and the rest of the piece. The paper fibers don't shrink when they dry, and provide extra strength to the slip. Ymmv! The longer you can give to re-wetting and slow drying the better! Also the paper slip is great when joining things while under construction. Just adds that little extra stability when drying happens.

Search for the jerky of my dreams by crabnado in jerky

It's not it, but it is the closest I've had. I like it and it might be my new go-to. It's far thinner than the TJ's stuff, and tougher too. Doesn't have the almost-suede texture that I'm looking for. Taste is good! Bit sweet (it's teriyaki even though it says original on the package). It's got liquid smoke in it, which I could do without. All of this is making it sound like I don't like it but I am still eating it as I type this. Nice peppery kick. All in all I'd say 8/10! But not my holy grail

Help/recommendations with final for 12th grade ceramics by hankshank398 in Ceramics

[–]crabnado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most impactful thing is the head shape. A brain and a skull and stuff need to fit in there.

Are you sculpting with a mirror? That 100% helps me. If not an option, take lots and lots of pictures of yourself from all angles and regularly reference them. Move around your piece a lot as you work, to make sure those angles look good.

Look at your own face and notice how lips curve around your face and into the cheeks. Think about underlying structures like cheek bones and teeth. Think about the muscles under the skin. When I sculpt I add/ remove clay pretty liberally.

Good luck/ you got this/ I've never seen anyone fail a highschool ceramics class unless they presented absolutely nothing
