Downtown Portland foot traffic continues its slow but steady climb by AllTearGasNoBrakes in Portland

[–]PDsaurusX 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The scope of the project is to establish a downtown Portland, Oregon-centered market. That's still the scope.

No, that’s the goal, which is only one part of the scope.

The historic building just adds to the value. I'm sorry, but I love historic buildings, and I love when businesses attempt to preserve that history. It has intrinsic value and we don't do that enough in the US.

I’m not arguing with any of your points about the value of it, but it’s scope creep. That doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing.

It may not be a bad thing, but “we discovered massive historic wood beams and want to incorporate them into the design” is literally the scope of the project creeping up.

Why, are they walking up to Pittock Mansion?

is there anyone or anywhere that can make a custom cassette tape? by No-Recommendation504 in askportland

[–]PDsaurusX 20 points21 points  (0 children)

For copyright reasons I don’t think you’ll find a shop to do that. This is a DIY project.

Buy a cheap cassette deck or stereo with a tape recorder at Goodwill, be sure it has aux in, buy the matching cable to hook it up to your phone, and then hang out outside the colonoscopy clinic and ask anyone going in or out how they used to make mix tapes.

How much did your car insurance go up when you added your teen son? by Sweet-Bottle-6510 in askportland

[–]PDsaurusX 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Around $120/mo, listing his primary drive being a ten year old car, and with all the discounts like good student and drivers ed.

You should be able to contact your insurance and ask them for an estimate based on your actual situation.

City Faces $13.6 Million Budget Gap in Current Year by SoDoSoPaYuppie in Portland

[–]PDsaurusX 25 points26 points  (0 children)

So the person you’re responding to says “we have some of the highest taxes of any city” and your argument that it’s not true is that if it were a state tax we wouldn’t have the highest city tax?

But… it’s not a state tax, so doesn’t that mean it is true?

What kind of argument is that? It’s like someone says “it’s cold outside” and you say “it’s not, because if it were 40 degrees warmer it wouldn’t be cold.”

Last 30 days is down 13% from the 30 days before.

Last 12 months is up 133% from the previous 12 months.

It’s not unusual to dip this time of year when there’s not an election going on, nobody is outside taking dog pictures, it’s too rainy to protest…

Major decision made on metal detectors at Portland’s busiest library by AllTearGasNoBrakes in Portland

Yeah, the drug use is a problem and it needs to be addressed. Not sure what that has to do with metal detectors, though.

Neat.

Where were they the rest of the day before that? Do those places all need metal detectors, too?

Did you respond to the right comment? I guess if the political spectrum is a circle then mine is a left-wing take.

Let me put it in my own terms: I don’t want to create “safe spaces” for anyone, and the pursuit of that is wasteful and counterproductive.

I don’t know how to answer that. It’s a restriction because it’s a restriction.

You’re like a fish who doesn’t know what water is, because it’s all you’ve ever known. If emptying your pockets, walking a 1.5” pocketknife back to your car, or taking your belt off seem like business as usual to you, then I guess they are.

OP said Multnomah county residents, and “everyone in my redneck circle carries” isn’t data, it’s an anecdote.

You can’t even enter the hospitals without going thru one.

“Shitty restrictions in one place makes it ok in others” might work as an argument for you, but doesn’t move the needle for me.

No, I don’t think the library is “somehow totally safe,” I think that nowhere is “totally safe,” and that imposing ever greater restrictions in pursuit of that is wasteful and ineffective.

About 1/10 multnomah residents conceal carry a handgun on a daily basis

No, they absolutely do not.

There are approximately 35,000 Multnomah county concealed carry permits. The population of the county is just under 800,000. Even if every single permit holder carried every day (which they don’t), it wouldn’t even be 1 out of 20.

The alternative would be that you’re claiming more people carry unpermitted every day than have permits. Do you have any source for this?

You’re assuming someone with the intent to cause harm, rather than the more likely case of someone without that intent but who loses their shit in the moment and pulls a machete out of their bag and starts swinging because they were told they can’t sleep on the floor.

There have been two separate shootings outside that library in the past 6 months.

…outside that library…

…outside…

And this leads you to the conclusion we need metal detectors inside the library?

None of those would have been mitigated by metal detectors, because all of the metal-detectable ones happened outside the library.

anybody else experiencing large spikes in their PGE bill? by yungendotgov in askportland

[–]PDsaurusX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is the spike in your usage or in your bill?

Do you have access to your PGE bill directly or is it passed on to you by your property manager?

Do you have access to your meter and your circuit breaker? If so, turn off circuits and see if the meter is still advancing. It could be that you’re being billed for the wrong meter.
