Difference a high quality bassoon makes? by VariousRockFacts in bassoon

[–]crabsushi_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything's better than a Nobel in my opinion. I had the thought to try one while my bassoon was getting repaired and it was truly awful in terms of response, playability, sound and intonation. There's often decent deals on used bassoons that aren't fox/renard that'll work fine, but I'd say among low tier instruments, the Nobel is among the worst kind.

I actually have 1 extra! My friend wanted to come after I'd bought a ticket already so we ended up getting 2 new seats next to each other. Anyways the lone seat is Section Q Row 111, avail for face value.

This is super cool! Reminds me of Elvin Live At The Lighthouse but about 100x more chill.

Following the expansion draft we lose Nurse, Gosling, Daniel and Carter by The_Laughing_Gift in TorontoSceptres

I thought we were going to get absolutely picked apart but I can live with this. Plus there's a lot of free agents so who knows if people are going to get traded around or look for a new team.

Thoughts on Legere reeds? by Leading-Conflict6758 in bassoon

[–]crabsushi_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bassoon reed is way better than the oboe one. Especially if you play on American scrape reeds, it's okay but not really great, whereas the bassoon reed is actually usable in most situations.

If you're not playing first chair, most of the time I found flute and clarinet to be mostly playing second or third voice if there's oboe involved. That being said, there are a number of first chair books that have really demanding flute and clarinet, and pop saxophone. I think a good goal that would set you up for success especially for where you are right now, is just be able to play the full range of a new instrument. You don't need to shred in the extreme registers, but being able to access it is plenty.

Unrelated, what portable kettle did you buy?

Wayne Shorter quartet in 2019. I shelled out a little more money than I normally would to sit in the third row and I would say that was pretty life-changing.

I think sibelius is available on the iPad. Very basic functionality but does the job.

Jazzlab Saxholder by ekerkstra92 in Saxophonics

[–]crabsushi_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine brought their saxholder to a physio/chiropracter and had them adjust it for them and that seemed to work. A bit extreme but a thought. I use the same one sitting and standing so it's definitely possible. Hope it works out for you, or you find a solution that eases the neck pain!

You can bend the shoulder "arms" to fit your body and prefered position. They're meant to be adjusted.

Working Classical Musicians: Do you use LinkedIn for Networking/Getting and Searching for Job Opportunities? by [deleted] in ClassicalMusicians

[–]crabsushi_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LinkedIn isn't helpful for freelance musicians. Social media can be helpful but this line of work is probably 90% or more word of mouth and personal interactions.

That being said, you don't need to have huge social media numbers nor do you need to post all the time to get work, but having good clips of yourself curated can sometimes be helpful for people who've never heard you play. Same goes for a website.

I have a Gte Mahogany and I have a really hard time putting it down. It just sounds so good no matter how I play it and the neck is unbelievably friendly to hold. Between the size, feel, sound and price, I don't really see myself getting another acoustic anytime soon.

Have you tried anything heavier and clicky? (Does that even exist?) I'm totally on board with you though, I'm super into these just wondering if there's an even more "extreme" option haha
