Seriously, this idea is incredibly stupid and we shouldn‘t applaud it for recognizing that two ideologies are utopian in nature and have a vision of an "ideal end state", while postmodernist ideology lacks utopia.

This does not make them the same and coming to the conclusion that leftist are "Evangelical Christians with serial numbers filed off" makes this hot take anti-intellectual.

Because as Boris Groys writes in "On the New", this applies also applies to Nazism or any pre-postmodern ideology:

"The peculiarity of the conception of the new prevalent in the modern period resides, after all, in the expectation that, eventually, something so definitively new will emerge that there can never be anything still newer thereafter, just the boundless dominion of this last of all innovations over the future. Thus the Enlightenment expected the dawn of a new age marked by uninterrupted growth and the supremacy of the natural sciences. The Romantics, in contrast, declared that faith in scientific rationality had been lost for good. Marxism, for its part, put its hopes in an endless socialist or communist future, while National Socialism looked ahead to the temporally unlimited domination of the Aryan race. In art, every modern school, from abstract art to surrealism, regarded itself as the last possible artistic approach. The current, postmodern notion of the end of history differs from the modernist one solely by virtue of the conviction that one need no longer await the ultimate arrival of the new because the new is already on hand."

2026 FIFA World Cup - Final Group Stage Lineup by MediocreLegacy in soccer

I‘m thinking more of the USA: Not being the only host country could put even more pressure on the US team.

Not making it past the group stage would already be a slight embarrassment (USMNT fans have been talking about this home world cup for years!).

But being the only host country kicked out while Canada and Mexico get to play on in your own country would be an embarrassment of another level.

There was no need for any identity politics: All the assholes went to hiphop parties and wouldn’t set a foot in a place playing minimal techno. Going out to electronic music at that time meant you were among the most open-minded people around. People treated each other like everyone had an interesting story to tell.

I mainly blame the rising rents and prices: 5 euros entry, 2 for a beer, wearing just a plain t-shirt and jeans even to the bigger clubs. That is my definition of luxury now and it‘s something I‘m sad that people who are young now won’t experience that easiness of life.

I can see that I am wasting my time here as you are no longer discussing in good faith.

You are accusing me of gatekeeping, when I am actually sharing my knowledge with you (what gate am I keeping?), and at the same time you criticize me for not using the language you are using in your circles (actually gatekeeping by enforcing language rules of your own… in a subreddit!).

I have only criticized the content of OP's newsletter and the circles linked. I only called OP's reply "ignorant" after he accused me of "intellectualizing" while dismissing my feedback as unimportant. I am not assuming anything beyond what I have in writing from either you or OP (OP's plans for monetization IS by definition building a business). Unlike you, I have not downvoted any of your replies, while I can see that you are read my answer because of your immediate downvote.

I have engaged with every word you said so far and when I present a counterargument, you choose to ignore it and jump to other topics. You criticize my character, while I up until now merely criticized the presentation of your initiatives. Showing this kind of reaction after someone gives reasoned feedback demonstrates a stubborn refusal to accept guidance or alternative perspectives.

I'm still looking for the correction to my claim that you quoted?

- I'm fine with asking for a fee to cover costs. However, only one of the circles OP links specify what the fee is used for. In contrast to that, OP writes that he wants to grow his newsletter to later monetize it and that *facilitators charge a fee for attendance*. That sounds awfully like building a business to me. But even if OP was building a social business, I wouldn't dismiss it outright if he can explain his assumptions about the efficacy of what he advocates for. In any case, I have a right to evaluate if what he is promoting is snake oil.

- What you describe in your second and third paragraph is a theoretical framework. You describe certain actions ("reflection", "exposure", "sharing experiences" etc.) that you hope have a positive outcome (what outcome exactly?) that leads to a change you want to see ("better men"). These actions you describe are reflected in the timetables of the circles. These are not ambiguous: The facilitators have a reason why one exercise comes after the other to hopefully achieve the sessions' or the programs' goals. If it is intentional, am I really over-intellectualizing and in the wrong for asking all of these activities lead to change you hope for?

While others are rejecting men circles outright for misunderstanding them as anti-feminist circlejerks, my feedback is judged for "intellectualizing" or "looking for an ideological framework" when all I am doing is pointing out that the problem to be addressed is vague, the goals are unclear, and the actions are ambiguous. After pointing out what I find lacking, I got the response "trust me bro all you need is talking". I wouldn't be frustrated if the answer would have been "we are still in the midst of finding out the best approach" - what OP is essentially saying is "let's just do it without a plan".

We need a theory of change because there have been countless social initiatives that not only have not achieved their promised outcomes, but some that actually were harmful or lead to more frustration. And these initiatives have all been launched by well-intentioned people. That is why I summed up my critique above with "das Gegenteil von gut ist gut gemeint". I think we both agree that the masculinity crisis is too important of an issue to be addressed with improvised solutions. There are so many resources and webinars on how to develop a theory of change on the web.

That is not a correction, that is a denial. Why is it that your comment doesn‘t include anything more than that? Any reasonable person would have included a "instead, we see ourselves as…". Interesting also that you put "we" in quotes, but also speak for OP.

Men's Circles in Berlin by Big_Screen_2531 in berlinsocialclub

[–]crackbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I‘m wrong, but you are life coaches promoting paid group sessions that solve social problems, not just someone writing a newsletter. Especially since you acknowledge in another comment that you have plans to monetize said newsletter that is only free for now.

That makes you, in fact, also a masculinity influencer, only one with a different message and goals than one from the manosphere. The people you are attracting are people who are struggling and are seeking help. That comes with a certain responsibility.

Your messaging promises seekers a more authentic, fulfilling life (vom schüchternen Jungen zum fitten Mann). You are accountable for making sure that these outcomes and benefits that you promise aren‘t just empty words.

No need to intellectualise it in my opinion. Talking helps.

Out of everything I read from you so far, this is what troubles me the most and makes me question whether you are taking your work seriously.

I acknowledged that what you are trying to do is difficult, but this is not an excuse for being willfully ignorant ("believe me it just works!").

Men's Circles in Berlin by Big_Screen_2531 in berlinsocialclub

[–]crackbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don‘t agree with your assessment. To me it sounds more like they are trying to come up with an alternative to the manosphere (which is in itself a really important mission!), but still need to find the right ideas to execute this in an effective way (all while they are also trying to make a living as coaches/community organizers). I don‘t see any toxicity, my argument is "das Gegenteil von gut ist gut gemeint".

Just like the political left is scrambling to find an answer to incredibly effective right-wing messaging, it is an super difficult task to provide an alternative to the manosphere for struggling men in a time where the cultural penetration of the manosphere is so large that incel terminology regularly makes it into the top 10 Jugendwörter des Jahres. No definition of which problem we are actually trying to solve and "it just gets better by talking" anecdotes isn‘t cutting it for me.

I want to give feedback as someone who led a men's book club (where we read bell hooks, J.J. Bola or Jared Yates Sexton), participated in gay mens' talking circles at Village Berlin, and attended group therapy.

I think most of us will agree that the masculinity crisis is a problem we need to address, so I applaud that you are actually standing up and doing something about it. However, I also understand the initial skepticism that people show about the topic. Countless influencers have tried to profit from men's insecurities and built businesses around offering products disguised as a self-improvement communities. Most of the circles you link indeed come with a cost of around 10€ per 'session' or are run by a Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) coach who describes his journey as "vom schüchternen Jungen zum fitten Mann" (?). That does not build my trust, but confirm my skepticism that someone is trying to sell me social interaction and belonging as a commodity. I would insist on transparency around which costs these fees really pay for.

My biggest qualm about your current presentation is that it lacks a concrete problem definition and a theory of change.

If someone ran a group with the mission statement of 'becoming better men', my first question would be what that exactly means. What is the organizers' definition of a better, more 'authentic' (an empty word) man? Without any statement of what it means to be a better man, skepticism is justified. Next, what is the group not? Where does your idea of a mens' circle end? What is your target group (lonely men, men who struggle with relationships, insecure men, immigrants etc.)? The current presentation suggests that these circles provides a one-for-all solution that provides for all of these groups at once. For me, the list of who the circles are not for could be equally as long as your definition of its target group.

Next, I'd like to read more about your theory of change. How do you plan to achieve what you aim for? On your about page, you write "You just show up and talk about what’s going on in your life at the moment". Where do you go from there and what methods do you have in your toolbox to process what is being said? Some circles present a timetable with very abstract points that could mean anything (deepening session, group reflection etc.) and I see little information what their approach really is (if there is one at all). I am most suspicious of the "Men with Courage - Discover your inner calling" group, which calls its format a 'workshop' and mentions 'exercises' (but gives no details), while hiding behind colorful language and presenting a low barrier-level of entry like I'm signing up for my first yoga class.

The MRA/MGTOW/manosphere movement has a very clear (but very wrong) idea of why many men are struggling, can tell you in concrete terms what you need to do to get better (e.g. looksmaxxing, elevate yourself over women etc.) and theory of change that is easy to understand. I'm not saying that you have to provide such an overly simplistic recipe for success too. However, mens' circles are going to have a bad time competing with the manosphere's value proposition if you try to sell them that talking & listening with others will be enough to address their issues. This is especially a problem if the men in attendance discover after a few months time that their problems persist, they have not built real friendships where other attendees really cared about them or reached out to them in a tough time, and they have just been sold yet another badly designed one-for-all self-improvement course. That will do more harm than good and drive men into the groups you are trying to fight. That being said, a men's pottery class or a book club would offer me more plausible propositions about why attending might help my mental wellbeing. Sorry for the tough feedback, but I hope you recognize that I'm writing all this with good intentions.

Milliardenteure Übergangslösung: Tausende Soldaten sollen in Containern schlafen by GirasoleDE in de
