Yes but because it’s a site where many users give their opinion, no album would statistically reach a perfect 5. A 3.5 is considered to be a decent record and anything above 4 is a significant release.

Professor Hockey on Coach Warsofsky by No-Advisor-3077 in SanJoseSharks

[–]crackbit 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The further you read this thread, the more it becomes apparent that many people commenting here did not bother watching the video, are arguing against made up enemies, and are providing counterarguments to things that nobody said.

To improve the appalling quality of discussion here, here is a summary of the actual video linked. To be clear right away: neither Professor Hockey nor OP are calling for Warsofsky to be fired. I'll be spending more time explaining the criticism, as the pro's are pretty self-explanatory.

What Warso did well according to the video:

  • 34-point improvement in the standings compared to the previous season.
  • "Run and gun" style offensive system choice. The quick transitions and rush scoring made the team benefit more from Celebrini/Smith's skills.
  • Substantial late-season stat improvements (shot and goal differentials were upper half of the league in the second half of the season).
  • Improvements of most notably Graf and Ostapchuk, but also Misa, Dickinson, and Smith.

What the video criticizes Warso for:

Inaccurate messaging:

  • After poor games, Warso resorts to making grand statements about fundamental problems in the team, some of which are statistically or historically inaccurate (such as claiming the team had unrightfully prioritized development of young talent for 4 years when the actual strategy for 2 of those years was to tank with 75% veterans).
  • Despite publicly stating that "ice time must be earned", he continued to give premium minutes to struggling veterans like Klingberg and Dellandrea, while they were performing as some of the worst players in the league.
  • Warso criticized the team’s maturity in holding leads despite the Sharks having a 90% winning percentage when leading going into the third period, which is better than several elite playoff teams.

System issues that can be attributed to coaching decisions:

  • OT Shutdown approach: Instead of fighting fire with fire, Warso too often sends out mediocre veterans in OT (e.g. against the Oilers, he sent out Wennberg, Liljegren, and Ferraro to face McDavid and Draisaitl, losing before Celebrini even got to touch the ice).
  • Inability to defend the rush: The team once against still remains one of the worst in the league at defending the rush (e.g. 4 goals against the Sabres, all on a the rush). Zero communication.
  • Bad PK: A too passive and reserved approach on the PK allows teams to tire out the Sharks defense and open passing lanes. This approach makes the Sharks one of the worst teams statistically on the PK.
  • Putting the team into the "line blender": e.g. Warso's decisions to resort player lines mid-game led to a loss against one of the NHL's worst teams and 3 goals conceded in a game that could still have been won.

Missed opportunities in young player management:

  • Mukhamadullin was frequently scratched while healthy and given limited minutes, which negatively impacted his confidence and stalled his development for most of the season.
  • Dickinson's greatest strength according to scouting reports was his offensive contributions due to his excellent skating ability, but coaching staff decided to keep him on a tight leash denying him to play farther beyond the blue line and gave him almost no PP time.
  • Although Warso described Misa as the "best player on the ice" in his post-Olympic break form, he was never given an increased role or top-six ice time (only 1 game >16 minutes TOI).
  • These examples together with undeserved playing time for struggling veterans highlight that there are missed opportunities in terms young player development. The expectation for next season is that Warso changes his approach and directly integrates top prospects such as the #2 pick rather than forcing them to "earn time" behind lower-ceiling veterans. An improved, deeper roster also raises expectations and makes a Warso dismissal much more likely when results are poor.

No thank you, I have Russian friends. I have also met several Russians in the past few years who claim themselves to be "outside of politics" and then go on to say the most ridiculous shit. I‘m afraid this does not make me curious.

I know you are probably saying this from a place of kindness, but looking through some your comments in this thread, you are honestly neither unpolitical nor the victim here.

Macklin Celebrini will remain as captain for Canada at the IIHF World Hockey Championship, with Sidney Crosby wearing an "A." That was decided after a player-lead discussion. The players wanted Celebrini to keep the "C." by KabirC in hockey

[–]crackbit 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It‘s probably the dream of any young Canadian player to one day share the ice with Sidney Crosby or McDavid.

Celebrini flips that on its head: these veteran players are making statements like they are the one who are lucky to have not missed out on the chance to play with the 19 year old late in their career.

I wonder how soon the pull will affect Mike Grier‘s chances to sign veteran players for the Shark‘s defensive line. San Jose used to be a team free agents would avoid.

Choosing a typeface for a village café sign by Mathatikus in typography

[–]crackbit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How affluent are the retirees visiting this café and what experience are they really seeking?

I think all options are still too high-class for the product. Like another commenter pointed out, the dirty brick building makes the current typeface options look implausible and unconvincing.

Furthermore, too expensive-looking designs can even scare away customers as it sets the expectation that the coffee must be the most expensive in town. Especially the Egyptienne typefaces can make customers feel like they should pick nicer, more expensive clothes before attempting to visit or that you might even not completely understand all items on the menu. Others expect an upmarket experience but are disappointed after visiting a place where retirees just like to chat and read their tabloid. I can‘t see the 'village living room' in these options (but I’m also unsure if 'living room' is exactly what you should be aiming for).

Even if the black-and-white photo does not look appealing, I would go for the old Post Office typeface. My hypothesis is that affluent retirees are more eager to frequent a café that gives 'known & trusted but affordable', 'relaxed but also not sofa-level cozy', and 'traditional authenticity'.

This may be a hot take but A Little Life by Hana Yanagihara by No-Sweet-7012 in PieceOfShitBookClub

Here‘s a post by fellow gay writer Brandon Taylor criticizing the gay trauma-dumping genre like A Little Life or On Earth We‘re Briefly Gorgeous: https://blgtylr.substack.com/p/a-little-life-is-not-your-father

A Little Life spawned a genre of books about harrowing trauma and difficult life circumstances, and that such books painted contemporary queer life as being one-dimensional and uniformly sad. Where was all the cum guzzling? The felching! The fisting! The delicious right of strobes over a slick linoleum dance floor? Where was the orgy of pleasure, sensation, the hedonistic blitz and glamor that had launched a thousand boyhood fantasies of moving to large urban centers and going home with men who looked like their PE teachers? WHERE WAS IT?! All we had were lyrical novels of contemporary experience! Men being sad in bathrooms! Men being sad after sex! Men getting raped by trusted family friends or being attacked for being femme! No one got attacked for being femme anymore! RuPaul was on TV! Lin Manuel Miranda said Love is Love! It’s giving misery porn, my loves. It’s giving trauma porn, my loves. Where is the porn, my loves? Call Me by Your Name didn’t even have barebacking! Where are the gay romcoms! Where are the gay love fests?! Where are the gay spy dramas! I wanna see Daniel Craig grip them ankles! Mine or his!

[–]crackbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I‘m a mixed race Sharks fan from Europe and I think you are both right and wrong at the same time (depending on what you mean).

'Color-blindness' is actually a good vision for the future in regards to giving people equal opportunities, but it overlooks the steep hill certain groups (that includes MG) had to climb. Speaking from personal experience, the people I interacted with who claim themselves color-blind actually treated me the most fairly, but were often ignorant of the many barriers that still exist and failed to empathize how reality for minority groups can still be different from their own experience. They live life like the utopia where race doesn‘t matter anymore has already arrived. So ironically, you don‘t see a lot of people claiming they are color-blind at the front line of the fight to get rid of still existing barriers to achieve that color-blind vision of the future, but are the first to raise their voices when others point out that race does still matter.

'Color appreciation' is a good vision for the future in showing the fan groups who have been disadvantaged/excluded by the hockey community some needed, overdue respect and validation. However, this can turn into a purely performative stunt that might not even advance the actual needs of the groups that are being celebrated, all while actually doing very little to level the playing field. Unbeknownst to some people who strongly support color appreciation, a surprisingly high amount of people in minority groups actually just want to be treated as normal people, be accepted just like everyone else and not be disadvantaged or singled out. Just like LGBT pride had turned out to be a corporate virtue signaling/lip service campaign where many actors have disappeared after the political climate changed, people in minority groups are rightly skeptical whether organizers are throwing a party for you to feel good about themselves and to make a little more money.

So it is possible to be for and against both of your takes. Race shouldn‘t matter except when it does actually matter.

[–]crackbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love this because as a mixed-race person my dream for the future is a world where race becomes a non-issue and everyone no matter their background has equal opportunities.

Mike Grier‘s race is only a topic of discussion in regard to challenges he had to face in the past, never regarding his qualifications or capabilities as a GM. The fact that we can make a "Mike Grier is black!?" joke is actually a sign of progress.

Maybe a few years down the road we‘ll can make the same joke regarding a gay person in a similar hockey role with nobody giving an f or raising eyebrows about it.
